To think shops shouldn't charge for 'tiny baby' clothes

Looking at baby clothes in boots today (i'm sure lots of other places do them). They had tiny tiny vests suitable for 3lb babies that they were charging £8 for! And it had a tag on them that said the front opening for hospital wires. Horrible.

I've just found them online and the hospital wires tag isn't on them, it's now described as:
"Low Birth Weight Jacket features a friendly bear print, a wrapover front and opens flat with soft velcro fastenings to the front and sleeves to make dressing the little chap much easier."

If you 3lb baby is so ill in hospital it has tubes and wires, It's criminal to charge £8 for something for them to wear!

ffs, instead of whinging about stuff, get your knitting needles out, buy some bamboo or cotton yarn and knit some free clothes...

oh wait, you'll have to buy the yarn, needles, oh patterns as well, and then take them over

see, you've saved someone money and put your energy into something productive

hth

Grin Someonesnotinbed

It would be a nice gesture I suppose for companies to donate tiny baby clothes to NICUs - possibly they do already. But people would still like to buy them, either as parents or as gifts to new parents.

haha, ds2 was 2lb11oz at birth & tbh he wasn't able to wear clothes until he was about 4.5lb even then it was just a hospital gown until he was out of the incubator & in an open cot.

If he had been well enough at 3lb to wear clothes I'd hav ebeen so amazed I'd happily have paid £8.

When you have a tiny baby last thing you feel like doing is clothes shopping, so i recon its people buyin presents anyway.

OP move away from the keyboard....

grateful

I used to buy tiny baby clothes for the children's dolls. They fit Baby Annabel beautifully, they usually get reduced massively in the sales, and dolls clothes are very expensive.
Besides, although there's less fabric in them, they're more complicated to make. As a sewer I can tell you when you get to the small sizes they get harder to make.

electra · 19/09/2011 18:22

What a strange op.

Illegitimate · 19/09/2011 18:23

is OP for real? Shock

olddog · 19/09/2011 18:25

My baby was almost 8lb when he was in NICU. Should he have got free clothes too or do you have to be ill and small? He is in age 2-3 now but he is still ill so can I have free stuff?

pippilongsmurfing · 19/09/2011 18:25

Obviously YABU, and ridiculous.

If shops didn't seel stuff for prem babies then there would I am sure, be some MNers moaning that they couldn't even get clothes for premmies.

FetchezLaVache · 19/09/2011 18:27

Funny OP's not been back to defend her bizarre view.

AuntiePickleBottom · 19/09/2011 18:28

SBCU in the hospital provide clothes, blankets, nappies ect for all prem babies. they wash and dry the clothes aswell.

so there isn't any need for parents to buy clothes unless they choce to

I agree they shouldn't be free - although £8 is a lot of money compared to much cheaper vests that are available.

They shouldn't cost more than the same items for a larger baby would.

NeedaCostume · 19/09/2011 18:31

Hiss, you sure do like to cause a stir...

starfishmummy · 19/09/2011 18:33

Actually I would have found the label about being suitable for hospital wires very useful - or at least the relatives who were buying stuff would have done and it would have saved me having to call the nurse to undo drips every time ds vomited over his clothes.

spiderpig8 · 19/09/2011 18:33

and what about parents of an equally critically ill 16 yr old child with tubes and wires attached? should shops clothe them for free too? and if not, why not? what's the difference?

I feel a bit sorry for the OP now. She doesn't deserve a kicking.

I imagine her heart was in the right place, but she just hadn't thought it through.

SpamMarie · 19/09/2011 19:10

One of my friends was seriously ill with cancer. Can he have his clothes for free too?

Um, yes you should pay for your baby clothes, no matter what size they are.
