A minor grump,if I may?

Every so often I will do something new. The dc's and I all find it tasty, I find it tasty. It's normally a recipe recommended to me by family, friends or Mnetters that they have found tasty.

Dh will eat till he's full, then say not to do it again as it was bland.

Tonights offering was a mild but very tasty curry from Mnet, I tried it, and liked it. Dh said it had hardly any flavour.

He's not rude or horrible, just insistent that he is correct and we are all abnormal in some way Hmm. He also does it in restaurants, I will try his meal and it's fine.

AIBU to think that as Dh smokes over 20 cigarettes a day I can disregard his opinion on the subject?

Dh INSISTS that smoking does not impair your sense of taste and this is a myth.

AIBU or is dh?

But he can add hot sauce, you can't take it out of your portion if you don't want it hot ...

Honeydragon · 18/09/2011 20:00

OldBoots

dh doesn't "do" Doctors

he's a great man, but at times he epitomises stereotypical maleness. He did eventually relent and go to A&E when he ran his finger through the circular saw. His parents and myself managed to convince him he has a finite amount of blood Hmm

Thank you for your responses. I thought I was normal to think "Meh, daft twat", but my period is due, so I am a bit more homicidey than normal Smile and wanted a second opinion. Special thanks to the ex smokers too, it's nice to know that if he does eventually quit he might get the same pleasure in food we do.

Was it a MN recipe and he knew it? I bet mind would try and not enjoy it if he thought it came from my imaginary friends.

I bought a Miele home yesterday and he went round like this Hmm muttering "Mumsnet"

We're a bit the other way here. Everyone moans if food has any taste. Salt (which I don't add anyway), herbs, spices etc are all yuk and "too spicy", "foreign stuff" etc. I love things like Thai noodles (cooked with coconut milk and green curry paste) but the others won't eat them. They think Colman's mustard on a ham butty is exotic and wildly daring Shock

A1980 · 18/09/2011 21:03

I would make his food 99% chilli. That'll teach him to be rude when he has smoke comnig out of his ears Grin

He needs a bottle of chilli sauce like that dreadful woman on CDWM who pissed off all the hosts by adding it to everything before she'd tasted it.

Or tell him to get knotted.

HeidiKat · 18/09/2011 21:18

YANBU, smoking definitely impairs your sense of taste. I used to smoke but gave up the day after I found out I was having DD. I noticed a difference in taste really quickly, I used to be able to handle really spicy stuff and now medium hot curries are my limit.

izzywhizzyletsgetbusy · 18/09/2011 21:43

Just add 3 or 4 whole chopped fresh chilliis (with their seeds) to every dish you serve him - he needs the Vitamin C and you'll enjoy the expression on his face when he eats his first spoonful of trifle.

Is your DH Paul Hollywood off Great British Bake-Off? He has been driving me nuts by saying in a gentle, reasonable 'I brook no argument for I am Right' way to every single person that they don't use enough salt.

Erm, mate ... if everyone else thinks it's tasty, and you think it's bland, the best case scenario is you've got different tastes to everyone else and the worst is your palate is shot to buggery.

Honeydragon · 18/09/2011 23:21

I'm going to have the break it to him gently that he's wrong.....the shock could kill him Grin

When I have given up smoking its not made one iota of difference to my taste buds.

Maybe he just prefers more seasoned food than the rest of your family?
some people just do not because of smoking.

LRDTheFeministDragon · 18/09/2011 23:23

Grin Enjoy.

Honeydragon · 18/09/2011 23:28

Amber..... even bacon?

He has stopped eating stuff he used to like too.

Do you mind me asking, were/are you a heavy smoker?

peasandlove · 18/09/2011 23:28

agree with everyone, as a smoker who has given up in the past, you can definitely tell the difference in taste. It always amazes me watching TV shows like Hells kitchen where they finish for the day then sit around and chain smoke all night and it seems most of the contestants are smokers. How many big chefs do smoke?

paulapantsdown · 18/09/2011 23:30

Its the fags. This is why I put on 2 stone after giving up 20 a day - everthing just tasted soooo goood Smile.

My DH covers his food with salt and pepper before he even tastes it, as he has no tastebuds left. It makes me want to stab him.

nooka · 18/09/2011 23:45

You can reeducate your tastebuds. dh and I had a healthy eating period a while ago and almost totally cut salt out of our diet. Everything tasted very bland for a while and then we got used to it. When we did eat salted food it then tasted very very salty. Likewise I moved to skimmed milk which I had previously thought was totally watery, but now I find full fat milk too creamy to drink.

But yes, I agree it is the smoking - when dh has given up he has rhapsodies about whisky Grin

peasandlove · 18/09/2011 23:49

it is rather enlightening when you realise that you can taste a flavour rather than a texture or salty or sweet.. Like mozarella cheese, mushrooms etc. I found eating a pizza I could taste everything on it rather than just chewing something that was vaguely salty or spicy etc

sue52 · 19/09/2011 09:23

His taste buds are dulled through smoking. When DH gave up, he found flavours so new and intense he did find it difficult not to overeat.

AmberLeaf · 19/09/2011 10:34

I really dont buy it.

Honey, I have been a heavy smoker, a light smoker...a non smoker! am currently a medium smoker!

I can honestly say that I get as much pleasure out of food now as I did when I was a heavy smoker and a non smoker.

I love to cook and so need to be able to taste dishes as im cooking them.

Everyone seems more than happy with my cooking! my mum doesnt like too spicy but she puts a fair bit of salt on her food at the table she has never smoked and she has been known to put salt on bacon too.

I really do think everyone has different tastes. what is/was his mothers cooking like? and does he ever cook?!

AmberLeaf · 19/09/2011 10:37

re putting on weight after giving up smoking;

Thats because you replace one habit [smoking] with another [snacking]

nocake · 19/09/2011 11:14

A couple of these stirred into his meal should spice it up for him. Smile as you put the plate down and say "I've made it a bit spicier for you".
