DH and I are currently arguing. Please help me. I keep telling him we live in the continent of Europe. He tells me Europe isn't a continent and we live on an Island (britain) not a continent Confused . I keep saying everyone lives on some continent (eg Asia etc) but he can't understand this. He's trying to be all clever but I'm sure I'm right Wink . I know this is a dull question but mn to the rescue.....please

Lots of debateable points above.

OT I know..... but can anyone give a sensible distiction between British Isles, United Kingdom and Great Britain.

FWIW to me we don't live in the continent of Europe, but are (for good or ill) part of Europe.

BTW, I would define myself as (in this order) Cornish - British - EU citizen. :)

Pendeen - you live here

SummerRain · 18/09/2011 19:26

OK... turns out dp doesn't grasp this either.

Apparently we're on the same continant as Japan 'coz of tectonics or something'

[weeps]

It's all in the title i.e the "United Kingdom"........of GB and NI.....have a look at the wording on your passport and all should become clearGrin.

As far as I know (and happy to be corrected!):

British Isles: Britain and Ireland
Great Britain: Wales, England, Scotland
United Kingdom: UK + Northern Ireland

TheVK - looks good to meGrin.

Insomnia11 · 18/09/2011 19:31

Correct except I think you meant UK = GB + NI

Oops, indeed!

The British Isles is a geographical expression: the two big islands and all the off-shore islands including for example Orkney, Shetland, Arran, Aran, the Isle of Wight, the Isle of Man, Ynys Mon and the Channel Islands.

Great Britain as a geographical expression strictly means only the big island; but it is often used to include those others which are politically part of England (the Isle of Wight), Scotland (the Hebrides) or Wales (Ynys Mon),

The UK is a political expression and means GB in the second sense and Northern Ireland and its off-shore islands.

OP - has your dh argued himself into this position?

reastie · 18/09/2011 20:04
