DH and I are currently arguing. Please help me. I keep telling him we live in the continent of Europe. He tells me Europe isn't a continent and we live on an Island (britain) not a continent Confused . I keep saying everyone lives on some continent (eg Asia etc) but he can't understand this. He's trying to be all clever but I'm sure I'm right Wink . I know this is a dull question but mn to the rescue.....please

Obviously, to quantify, I mean mainland Europe, Africa and Asia, all have islands, such as ourselves, which are part of them.

reastie · 18/09/2011 18:27

line it isn't the first time he's been stupid Grin . He's had a day of trying to out brain me with questions like 'do you know why a drawing room is called a drawing room?' thinking he's all clever and able to impart knowledge to me but every time I've known the answer. I guess this time he confused me so much I was starting to think I was wrong Hmm

Gnome - you mean because in the New Europe they would send the one Dutch guy who can't speak English to ask for the sugar?! Wink

Actually SarahStratton I agree the Isles of Wight and Man are really interesting in that one is part of the UK and one isn't. And one is part of the EU and one isn't. But both are part of the British Isles and Europe.

I like the idea of Eurasia btw.

clam · 18/09/2011 18:31

Drawing room = "withdrawing" room. Where the birds used to hang out whilst the ladz got out the port.

LineRunner · 18/09/2011 18:31

reastie Has he got a quiz book or something? Maybe it's the Korean-translated-into-Hebrew-via-Portuguese version. That got me lost in Jerusalem once.

lenak · 18/09/2011 18:31

Is he one of those people that also thinks 'Africa' is a country?

We are physically and politically part of Europe - politically it may change, short of some kind of massive seismic shift which would probably wipe us all out anyway, we will always physically be part of Europe.

TheVermiciousKnid · 18/09/2011 18:34

Don't tell the Daily Wail - they will start a campaign!

reastie · 18/09/2011 18:38

linerunner Grin maybe

lenak he doesn't think Africa is a country

It's to do with plate tectonics at the most fundamental level but the simplest explanation is that of continental shelves, Britain and Ireland are part of the European Continental shelf which extends a fair distance out from land. In times of Ice ages the water level drops low enough for the water between the islands and mainland to recede. Technically we're just on higher bits of the outer edge of the continent which happen to have remained above water.

HMTheQueen · 18/09/2011 18:44

If you can't be on a continent and on an island... then what about the whole of Australia? Has your DH just rubbished my entire primary school geography lessons (and all other Australian children??)

zelda1982 · 18/09/2011 18:46

If we're not in Europe how can we enter and lose the European Song Contest? Wink

lenak · 18/09/2011 18:47

TheVermiciousKnid Grin

Does he accept that there are physically only seven continents? If so, which one does he think we are part of? Confused

reastie · 18/09/2011 18:49

lenak he doesn't think we are part of a continent at all as we are on an island Confused

orienteerer · 18/09/2011 18:54

I feel very European but within that I live in the UK which is an island within Europe. To me "continental Europe" is the "joined up" bit ie all the bits over the channel such as , France, Gemany, Belgium etc, etc

DaisySteiner · 18/09/2011 18:54

Well it doesn't stop Israel doesn't is zelda?!

orienteerer · 18/09/2011 18:56

Quote "The most common definition of continental Europe excludes Cyprus, Iceland, Ireland, Malta and the United Kingdom and its dependencies. Most definitions of Continental Europe extend the boundaries of the continent to its standard boundaries, the Ural Mountains, Ural River, Caspian Sea, and Caucasus Mountains".

zelda1982 · 18/09/2011 18:59

TBH i havent watched the Euro song contest for years (at least 14) so didnt realise Israel was in it. Hows that then?

Andrewofgg · 18/09/2011 19:06

Tell him Paris is on the continent of Europe and tell him to walk there.

kelly2000 · 18/09/2011 19:09

Europe is a continent, which joins onto the continent of Asia. Britain is a part of Europe, but is an island and therefore it is not part of the actual continent although technically they are joined by the continetal shelf. This is the same for other European islands.

Even if Britain was not an EU member, Britain would still be a european country due to its location. The landmass is Europe, the politicial unions are the EU and EEC. It is like how Canada is an American country as it is on the continent of N.America, but it is not a part of the united states of America.

Can I just ask what he thinks Europe is if not a continent?

LineRunner · 18/09/2011 19:11

Israel are using the Korean-Hebrew-Portuguese rulebook.

lenak · 18/09/2011 19:12

Israel is part of the European Broadcasting Area which is why it qualifies for Eurovision.

kelly2000 · 18/09/2011 19:13

Is your DH Karl Pilkington by any chance?

Pan · 18/09/2011 19:14

reastie - your dh sounds like one of those annoying school boys who manufactures an argument on the playground based on one very loose and poorly understood interpretation of a fact he holds dear.

I bet he's got form for this sort of stuff, holding forth around the tuc shop to anyone who cares to listen. I'm afraid you are now his captive audience. We all wandered off years ago. Good luck.Grin

lenak · 18/09/2011 19:15

Reastie Sorry but I'm sat here giggling at your DP.

Has he ever thought about going on the Apprentice?
