to take 3yo dd to McDonalds?

bushymcbush · 17/09/2011 22:03

We were out, in a hurry and with few options available. It was the first time she has ever eaten McDonalds. She wasn't even all that impressed, eating less than half her burger and just one of her fries!

But dh is acting as though I've fed her class A drugs.

I might understand his pov if he was some kind of health freak, but you should see the shut he puts into his own body on a daily basis. Including McDonalds and KFC.

AIBU? Do you give your dc the occasional McDonalds?

Ok Ivykaty you win the prize,ok , you are a better mother by miles purely because your kids don't eat McDonalds.
Happy now Hmm

backwardpossom · 18/09/2011 21:26

Grin hobnobs

Shall we get her a chocolate watch.

On second thoughts...

Seona1973 · 18/09/2011 21:50

hiss, cant believe you suggested a rusk as a suitable food - have you not seen their sugar content?

Cow&Gate and Farley's Rusks attacked for fat, sugar and salt content

nicciaa · 18/09/2011 22:03

don't you just love 'perfect' parents, shame on us 'unperfect' ones. Sorry, no I DON'T cook from scratch everyday, actually hubby does most of the cooking, I am at Uni, but now and then we do take DD to McD/KFC. A little treat now and then does no harm.

4madboys · 18/09/2011 22:08

of course the odd mcdonalds is fine, i think mine had their first mcdonalds at about three yrs?

infact ds2 and ds3 used to have a bfeed IN mcdonalds and then eat their nuggets and fruit bag Shock

and what seona said about rusks they are FULL of sugar, so not a healthy snack for a child!

but tbh i wont be taking any parenting advice from someone who claims to have four children, but only looks after one as the first three are looked after by her parents Hmm

mummymeister · 18/09/2011 23:37

Agree with 4mad. this has to be trolling -i can almost hear "the trip trap trip trap over the bridge" bit now! 4 kids, 3 with your mum and one you have kept and you are going to do right by - yeah and i'm a pixie.

Serenitysutton · 18/09/2011 23:59

Actually after years of being santimonious about cooking from scratch I'm starting to see less and less advantage. As it happens I don't buy ready meals, generally for the expense. But if you look at the ingredients in a decent quality ready made stew or lasagne you will find there are no ingrediants other than the ones you would use yourself to make it. So in the interests of saving time/ effort you are paying a premium to save yourself assembling those ingrediants. How does eating the one cooked from scratch make you some kind of beacon of health?

You always read people saying "we always cook from scratch" with the subtext being "so we're obviously healthy" but that's not really what it means at all.

RedOnion · 19/09/2011 00:03

Oh no! Not another McD's thread.

Your child will NOT die from eating a burger and some chips. FACT.

Chill the fuck out.

Until you are using the golden arches as a substitute for dinner on a 7 nightly basis then I imagine your pretty much OK.

Now, who's doing the Mcds run? I'm having a 1955 burger.

TheBride · 19/09/2011 00:05

Yeah, I think Hiss has outed herself. To be fair, as trolls go, she was quite a fun one. Otherwise this thread would just have been YANBU, YANBU, YANBU, Can have a Big Mac please?

RedOnion · 19/09/2011 00:06

I am officially dieing for a burger right now.

RedOnion · 19/09/2011 00:07

Oh and I wouldn't mind some of them potato wedges with the dip. GET ON IT.

NinkyNonker · 19/09/2011 19:46

Riiiiiiight Hiss, so you want us to take parenting advice/criticism from a 21 yr old whose first 3 children are raised elsewhere cause she and her mates think they know it all?! Righto! Grin Thanks for the laugh though.

Anyway.

I wouldn't take DD into MaccD's (she is only 1, so I am pre-empting myself I know!) but I can't see anything wrong with it every now and then. Banning foods and making them taboo is what leads to unhealthy eating patterns later. We used to go as children on the last day of term when we finished at lunchtime, it had no mystery to us whatsoever. Yes, we used to associate it with fun times out with my mum on the last day of term...but neither my sister nor I go their as adults. I don't have anything against it (hmmmmm, a double cheeseburger sounds good to me right now) but just don't tend to eat much junk food at the mo.

hiccymapops · 19/09/2011 20:08

Serenitysutton I think I love you Grin we have far too many ready meals (quite good quality I think) and I always worry about not cooking from scratch more (I do quite a lot, honest) You've just made me feel much better Smile

ChippingIn · 19/09/2011 21:33

21 - 4 kids, 3 raised by someone else... just the sort of person to be dishing out parenting advice and being scornful of others Hmm

stella1w · 19/09/2011 22:10

yanbu.. i take my 3 yo from time to time.. she eats hardly any of it, but loves the atmosphere (what atmosphere?) and when we get home, demands dinner which drives me nuts.. if I am going to feed her trash the very least should be I shouldn't have to cook later!

hiss42 · 19/09/2011 22:25

I don't have 4 bloody kids at 21. I was fed up because I never said anything personal to anyone, was just discussing the topic which is what the thread was for and everyone starts ganging up on me just because I had a different opinion. Cannot believe an 'adult' thinks that if I don't feed my son mcdonalds he won't have friends at school.... and if whoever it was had even been following the thread I said that once they were at school and could actully chose to go then that's different to a point in their life where they are incapable of making decisions and rely on you to make them for them. in my opinion three is too young to be chosing what you eat and so as a parent you should make a positive choice for them.

and triggles better not run after me or your hips/knees/other old person bodily part that is failing might give in. yes I can be personal too.

backwardpossom · 19/09/2011 22:55

hiss you sound rather unhinged.

Moominsarescary · 19/09/2011 22:56

Can't believe you think giving a rusk to a 3 year old is a healthy option, you sound very immature for 21 , my friends think your bad parents, realy!

Moominsarescary · 19/09/2011 22:58

And why do you have a group of 21-24 year olds sat around your house at 11 on a Monday night?

MilkNoSugarPlease · 19/09/2011 23:50

better not run after me or your hips/knees/other old person bodily part that is failing might give in. yes I can be personal too

That wasn't personal...that's just strange...although strange seems to be your common theme here...

UrsulaWoleffay · 19/09/2011 23:54

I let mine lick salt off a pound of lard, but only after a good long breastfeed first.

Prize?

exoticfruits · 20/09/2011 08:48

There was a thread where one woman's DC was eating butter straight from the pack-their body craved fat which they were not getting. After that the mother revised their diet.

Moominsarescary · 20/09/2011 09:01

Ds2 used to eat butter, don't think it was his diet though. He just said it was nicey!

ledkr · 20/09/2011 09:14

My dd likes the spray cream and is suppose to have it with fruit for desert. However,i frequently hear the sound of the spray to find her guiltily closing the fridge door with tell tale whitre stuff around her mouth Grin

chandellina · 20/09/2011 09:15

i'm sure my 3 year old son has had worse in the form of sausage and chips at a "nice" cafe. He's not had McDonalds yet (apart from ice cream!) but had Burger King at a children's party and I couldn't have cared less.

I think what you don't want is for your child to become enamored with fast food (or happy meals) and beg for it whenever they see it - otherwise no problem to have it from time to time. I don't like it myself, I'd rather go to a greasy spoon.
