tried to find a winter coat for ds that is both suitable for the damp cold weather as well as the school run in the dark.
no luck in the usual high street chain stores.
so irresponsible imo!
still looking...

I don't think it should be illegal to sell children's coats without reflecting stripes, but I do think that is unreasonable/silly/dangerous of schools to specify, as they almost all seem to do, that school coats must be plain black or navy. If schools would just specify, say "any light colour" for school coats that would get round much of the problem quite easily.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/09/2011 09:30

Yes, teenagers are more likely to amble about in our road, stepping off the pavement randomly whilst chatting, or talking on their phones, a teenage girl ran across right in front of my car the other week, didn't even glance towards me or pause, luckily I was going very slowly and it was broad daylight.

magso · 18/09/2011 09:57

It would be a excellent idea for the makers of school (or other dark) coats to always consider visibility in the design, but to make it a legal requirement is over the top! A little bit of subtle reflective piping can enhance the appearance and make a huge difference to visibility in the dark.

dexter73 · 18/09/2011 10:57

My dd (14) never wears a coat, even in winter, so she would need to have a high viz sweatshirt! Hardly anyone at her school does.

onagar · 18/09/2011 12:44

Understand the feeling behind wanting that, but I think the real answer is such harsh penalties for dangerous driving that every driver drops down to 10mph if there might be a child in the area and looks out that windowy thing in the front instead of making calls.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 18/09/2011 12:50

You lot are sooooo mean Grin

Illegal is a little OTT I will conceed.

But the OP is only thinking of the children!

Personally I would like to see the selling of navy blue/charcol grey anoraky, puffy school coats banned because they are so depressing.

I love a nice bright red/orange/lime green duffle or similar.

Oh and fleeces.
And those leggings and square cut sweatshirt combos for little girls.

Alls should be ILLEGAL.

IrmaMuthafucker · 18/09/2011 12:54

Get them a nice wolf fleece to match yours. If you can find one with reflective bits so much the better. Maybe one where the wolf face glows in the dark?

ChippingIn · 18/09/2011 13:00

Irma - now that's a fab idea Grin

Illegal - don't be a twat - it does your cause no favours!

TFMD - lime green duffle - good grief you have just gone right down in my estimation!!

Grin

Ongar - 10mph whenever there might be a child in the area. Get a grip.

IrmaMuthafucker · 18/09/2011 13:10

The Wolf Fleece Appreciation Society page is here. Check it out for inspiration Grin

onagar · 18/09/2011 13:10

ChippingIn, Well the 10mph was a figure of speech rather than a literal number. The point being to put safety of children first.

Are you then one of those then who says "but I had to speed - I was late to work"

IrmaMuthafucker · 18/09/2011 13:14

I've found the perfect solution here. The glow in the dark wolf poncho.

TheHumanCatapult · 18/09/2011 13:14

See I do make dd and dd3 wear high via vest over their coat on morning or evening time as we live down small lane no footpaths that is used as a cut through bu cars and lorries and is national speed limit and seems most insist on driving at maximum to .

And I do wish ds2 jacket has something on it.at end of my lane is even busier road that often takes 5-10 mins till can cross card lorries busses .no crossing at all .last 18 months 3 serious accidents one involving a school child (teenager) so I'm all for anything that makes it safer ok maybe not law but something

TheHumanCatapult · 18/09/2011 13:15

Tell you what chipping I settle for 30 mph on my lane and ban as cut through

thefirstMrsDeVere · 18/09/2011 13:55

Nothing wrong with a Lime Green Duffle! Shock

Dont you just find all this navy blue so dreary dahlink?

Like when I was looking for a buggy for DS4. All bloody pinstriped and 'urban' unless I wanted to spend a gazillion quid on a some Quimby megga stokbuzz (I didnt).

Why oh why oh why do shops think we want to dress our children in the colours of misery?

There are a few roads round here that are 20mph and a bloody good thing too. Most roads where not designed for the volume of traffic they get now and its not safe to go whizzing about.

ChippingIn · 18/09/2011 14:10

Onagar - if you meant 'drive safely' why didn't you say 'drive safely' and not drive at 10 mph? There is a world of difference between not thinking we all need to drive pretty much everywhere at 10mph and thinking that speeding is OK if you are running late - so please don't suggest I would think such a stupid fucking thing. I actually think an apology is in order.

THC - can you not all get together and get some highly annoying speed bumps or some lights put in?? It sounds like they wont do anything until someone kicks up an almighty fuss (or someone dies :( )

TFMD - Lime Green Duffle Envy

mousymouse · 18/09/2011 15:11

When I was 12 (84) my Mum went to Halfords and purchased me a cyclists vest to wear home from Secondary school.

I was so Blush

Coupled with the fact that she insisted I use one of her carpet bags from the 60's to use as a school bag Shock I nearly died!

My sister lives in Norway- obviously dark most of winter, she has some really cute reflective shapes that you just pin to your coat hood (or wherever)

pigletmania · 18/09/2011 16:48

irma lol will get one for my MIL she loves stuff like that

pigletmania · 18/09/2011 16:51
