tried to find a winter coat for ds that is both suitable for the damp cold weather as well as the school run in the dark.
no luck in the usual high street chain stores.
so irresponsible imo!
still looking...

I've just bought DD1 a reflective vest to wear over her coat when she's walking to and from the pickup point for her school bus. That's the only time she will be near a raod during the school day, so she can take it off and stuff it in her bag when it's not needed.

Problem solved.

Oh, and YABU.

I cant believe the hard time that the OP is getting on here, reflective bits on coats do not have to be huge and ugly, I think one of my coats has some kind of reflective thing on, it is ver discreet, just silver piping that I didnt realise was anything other than part of the design until I read the detailed information leaflet that came with it.

My dad used to make me wear an armband walking home from primary school, I hated it!

Hunter wellies come with reflective stripes on the back.

LemonDifficult · 17/09/2011 21:26

I think H & M are the bollocks for children's winter clothes.

oldraver · 17/09/2011 21:27

DS has a coat made by Me Too that has refelctive stripe right down the centre of the sleeve, as it matches the piping you wouldn't know its reflective strip

LynetteScavo · 17/09/2011 21:30

Do my Hunter wellies have strips on the back? I'd never noticed. I'd check them, but they are in the boot of the car and I can't be bothered.

I think it should be law for everyone out after dark to wear reflective clothing!

Clayhead · 17/09/2011 21:30

Polarn O Pyret coats also have reflective strips - pricey but fab coats.

DooinMeCleanin · 17/09/2011 21:33

Dd1 would cry if I tried to make her wear most of what has been linked to on here! Illegal? have you lost your mind op?

bizzieb33 · 17/09/2011 21:33

If all of you saying YABU had to walk your children down narrow country roads with no pavements at 3.45-4pm in the dark winter months you would soon change your tune!

I bought one of my dd's a new coat the other day & it was only earlier when walking the dogs down a road that I realised how little she showed up.

DooinMeCleanin · 17/09/2011 21:35

What about on summer nights when they won't be wearing coats? Should all children's clothing be reflective?

What if they are coming home late from a summer wedding? Should party wear also be reflective?

Maybe we should set some scientists the task of finding a way to ensure we only give birth to hi-vis babies?

AuntieMonica · 17/09/2011 21:35

i said YABU to make it illegal ffs

and i walk throught the fucking woods, buy a tabard and coat

southeastastra · 17/09/2011 21:37

we used to get free reflective arm bands in the 70s, forgot all about them!

LynetteScavo · 17/09/2011 21:39

DooinMeCleanin, your DD doesn't want to wear a florescent beanine? Confused
Has she no taste? WinkGrin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 17/09/2011 21:40

Don't think it should be illegal, but they are a very good idea and can be discrete as someone else said, can just look like grey piping. My DCs have the little jackets for scootering in the dark when we go to Beavers, just pop them on over their normal coats.

DooinMeCleanin · 17/09/2011 21:41

She is currently begging for this I think she might kill me if I teamed it with a flourescent beanie Grin

usualsuspect · 17/09/2011 21:42

I think they should all be made to wear high viz jackets at all times

WeekendInHull · 17/09/2011 21:49

A lot of kids rucksacks have reflective bits on them that sort of blend in with the bag, so just having a regular coat and a bag with some reflective bits would probably be easier.

Theas18 · 17/09/2011 22:20

Ok perhaps "illegal" is a bit strong but it would be a bl**dy good idea especially on teens coats!

I'm a conformist by nature but have "failed" to get my kids the "navy or black coat plain design" that the schools seem to want beause it is frankly increasing the danger wit hthem being out at twilight in the winter. THey have waterproof ski/hiking type coats that are mostly plain but do have reflective strips and are navy and light blue.

Never had a complaint and I'd be willing to make a fuss about it if needed- firstly you can't easily get decently weatherproof plain coats and secondly the dangers of dark colours and busy roads, alongside the poor statistics re child accidents esp of boys 12-15yrs on the roads.

Theas18 · 17/09/2011 22:21

Don't think my teens would wear tabards/reflective arm bands or tape stripes.....

NiecieTheTerminator · 17/09/2011 22:28

Why stop at children? Why not make them compulsory on adult coats too?

Daft.

But anyway, lots of coats have reflective strips but you can't always tell until they are in the dark - they can be very subtle (thank goodness too - would look awful otherwise). My two have had coats from Tescos and M&S in the past with the hidden reflective strips if it bothers you that much.

Panzee · 17/09/2011 22:33

We could ban the dark. Compulsory floodlights everywhere.

ItchyChin · 17/09/2011 22:39

We had to wear 'orange bands' at primary and middle school... attractive lurid orange sashes. Remember coveting my best friends fancy yellow cycling belt/sash which was allowed instead (her own not standard issue). It had a clip fastening and everything Envy. The punishment for not wearing your orange band to/from school or defacing it was to have to wear it all day. Was mine the only school to do this?!
