to not understand why people dress babies in anything other than babygrows.

Skinny jeans and jumpers, tight trainers, three piece suits...I could go on. Why is this necessary? Surely the priority is for your baby to be comfy, not trussed up like a Christmas turkey. In addition the 'mini adult' thing is creepy is it not?

I think there's nothing sweeter to see than small babies in babygrows and handknitted cardi's! They look so soft and comfy.
From about 6 months I did start dressing mine in soft comfy day clothes but only started jeans etc when they started crawling.
A lot of the otherwise beautiful actual clothes that were passed on to me had buttons or poppers at the back of tops, why the hell would you put a baby in that when they spend so long lying down when little, it would dig into their soft necks and backs?

Ohnoredundo · 17/09/2011 17:36

Love a babygrow and knitted cardi combo - so cute and comfy.

It's not necessary for older children or adults to wear anything other than babygros really, except in certain situations (i.e. safety clothing). If we all only ever did what was necessary the world would be a very dull place.

AllGoodNamesGone · 17/09/2011 17:38

DS1 wore "clothes" from quite early on as I couldn't wait to start dressing him up! Went for soft dungarees and stretchy trousers rather than jeans though.

I kept DS2 and DD in babygros for longer as I wanted to keep them looking like new babies for as long as possible! Put a little outfit on if we were visiting the person who bought it but stuck to babygro and cardi for days at home for the first 3-4 months I think.

Personally I think they start to look a bit silly in babygros during the day from about 5-6 months and they are not the best items for mobile babies and they tend to crawl up the inside of them/have the feet dragging around on the floor etc. Parent's choice though!

queenmaeve · 17/09/2011 17:42

I would love a baby grow, it would be so comfy.

Baby gros are a PITA when it comes to nappy changes. I much preferred vest tops and trousers (DS was an October baby so had layers hence baby gro plus vest was too fiddly)

Mandy2003 · 17/09/2011 18:40

I remember the first little outfit I put on my son when he was 6 weeks old - and announcing to the world "He's now wearing human clothes!"

lazylula · 17/09/2011 18:46

All mine have bee dressed in baby clothes, as in soft and comfy things, I liked to distinguish between day and night from early on and baby grows were night wear. People gave me jeans for the boys and they wore them a couple of times because it felt rude not to but mainly they wore dungarees, rompers and other soft clothes. Dd got a complete wardrobe given to her for 0 to 6 months and they were all soft baby clothes. A relation has given her a pair of jeans for 6 to 9 months which she will wear but in general I love baby clothes on small babies. I also love knitted cardis, all mine have had them and still do.

Moominsarescary · 17/09/2011 18:53

My last wore baby grows and all in one outfits till he was 4 months, but he was prem so small and just looked uncomfortable in anything else

My MIL had lots of white stuff knitted for DS and in my supreme knowledge I hated it. But as soon as DS was born all I have had him in is babygrows and the white knitted stuff. I am a convert. Those who mention the day/night distinction I do agree with. His 'day' babygrows are more outfitty if that makes sense. I just don't like babies to be clearly uncomfortable for the sake of vanity as it makes me uncomfortable. It also grates on me to see babies leave hospital in jeans and Abercrombie polo shirts - there's time for that when they are sullen teens, surely? But I suppose, as always, the age old adage rings true: each to their own.

My DS was born with such disproportionately long feet that he couldn't wear babygros so had to wear pajamas and separates from day 1. He still has barge feet which he gets from me

LadyFlumpalot · 17/09/2011 20:23

I put DS in soft thick cotton dungarees from about 6 weeks.

This kind of thing

He always looked very comfy - and very very lovely.

Bonsoir · 17/09/2011 20:27

Gosh, I just loved dressing my DD up, right from the start!

Inertia · 17/09/2011 20:37

I can't understand why anyone bothers with babygrows, all those poppers are an utter PITA- how can they be convenient for 2am nappy changes?

Pyjamas for bed, stretchy leggings and tops for daytime, minimal popper matching- job done.

4madboys · 17/09/2011 20:41

i agree with babygrows being a pita for night changes! i used those baby nighties, with just an elasticated bottom so you could pull them up and change nappies easily!! they are fab!

Bonsoir · 17/09/2011 20:42

Yes, DD had some fab white stretchy velvet leggings (with feet) with elastic waists and I used to dress her in them every day when she was really tiny, with a pretty top and cardigan.

BodyUnknown · 17/09/2011 20:52

Baby nighties are brilliant, great for easy changes with a very little baby who soils nappies during the night. I used babygros for night until I discovered them and they were a faff.

I do find it a bit weird seeing babies in skinny jeans and trendy clothes, but that's my own taste, not a judgment. I dressed baby DD in woolly dresses and tights, rompers, comfy things with no buttons, zips and things. I thought she looked lovely as well as the clothes being practical. I am sure some people thought my choices were hideous.

She's a little toddler now and wears a lot of dungarees as they are so practical. My mum really hates them, and I can't imagine why as I think they are BRILLIANT and look age-appropriate. It's a matter of taste.

TI admit I draw the line at babies' tshirts saying 'Little flirt' and so on...

JaneFonda · 17/09/2011 20:55

I absolutely adore babies in babygros, I dressed both DS's in babygros for a long time, then cute little dungarees when they started crawling etc.

When my DDs come home they will definitely be snuggling in babygros and cardies, adorable!

begonyabampot · 17/09/2011 21:01

Baby grows for me or Rhodes nice little jersey and top sets for before they are walking. Had a neighbour who dressed her baby in a. Red leather jacket!

begonyabampot · 17/09/2011 21:01

Rhodes? Those

breatheslowly · 17/09/2011 21:22

DD was in babygrows until 6mo. Once she started nursery it looked like she was in her pjs if I sent her in a baby grow. We had to use rompers rather than baby grows as her legs were too long for ones with feet. I just wanted DD to be comfy, particularly when she spent a lot of time lying down.

Ohnoredundo · 17/09/2011 21:24

Ha ha ha. Actually just spluttered wine at red leather jacket.

Dungarees so much nicer and cuter!
