i find it totally baffling

  1. it's damages your health, and that of other around you, ie your children
  2. its an outrageous waste of money
  3. doesn't do your looks much good

how much is a pack of 20 these days anyway?

OP you are correct, it is ridiculous and stupid and very expensive and horribly health damaging. And stinky.

However I still do it because it's a right bastard of an addiction that I still haven't managed to defeat.

Maristella, the anger is just your brain balancing out without nicotine. Nicotine does have an affect on the chemicals in the brain. I goes away but should only last 3 or 4 weeks, you would need to see a doctor if it goes on longer.

Also wrt weight gain. If smoking speeded up metabolism and suppresses the appetite then there would be no fat smokers. If it does have a speeding up affect on metabolism (which I don't know if it does) then it balances out around the 6 month mark.

I used to think I enjoyed hanging out with fellow smokers outside the pub too but I don't miss not doing it. If these smokers want to talk to you they will do so inside the pub (I'm single).

wrt cigarettes making it more pleasurable to stand under the stars, not sure about this as the stars are still there when you don't smoke. I agree that whether you think it's a choice or not there is still a need. I would liken it to the panic feeling I get when I have to drive on a night out so cannot drink. I do it reluctantly and enjoy it just as much but still prefer to get a cab. There is a need and I am aware of it but don't want to drink 1st thing on a morning and 'choose' to do it when I don't have to work the next day but would find it very difficult to not drink on those nights (unless I'm hung over) Blush.

I tried rolling my own a few times but gave up on the idea. Not only have you got to think 'where can I smoke' it's also 'where can I roll one'. I hated getting baccy in my mouth, on the kitchen floor, it smells worse and you look like and old grandad Grin.

My 17 yr old DD doesn't smoke but if she did I would ask her how she was going to afford it and explain that whilst it won't kill you at this young age be prepared to still be battling with it at age 50.

I don't think you can eliminate smoking even if they put the price up to £10 a packet. Something that does puzzle me is if the government are so reliant on the extra taxation they make from tobacco sales then why are they intent on making smoking so much more difficult and pricing it out. I don't get this, there must be something they know that I don't.

All these long post are very theraputic for me and I am not anti-smoking at all. But on reflection am glad I might have cracked it this time.

Dh smokes, has done sinse he was 16 and is very addicted, it drives me nuts, i used to smoke until i fell pg with dd1 then i just gave up and never went back.

I hate smoking but dh will never give up, he say's its his one plesure in life, he doesn't drink or go out anywhere.

But TBH you could say the same about drink (its bad for you, its expensive ect..).

emmanana · 17/09/2011 13:05

Until a couple of months ago, I smoked 20 a day (and had done for 30 years). I loved smoking, or the pleasure it gave, and could afford it. I'm not a fanatical ex-smoker, though I don't allow it in my home anymore (I now realise how much it smells).
I'm happy to be around people who smoke, and not get all judgey "Ooh are smokers totally crazy?" "Outrageous waste of money" (not asking you how you spend your money, please don't judge how I spend mine)
Each to their own.
I'm pretty secure of who I am, and thankfully don't feel the need to ride around on a high horse putting others down in order to feel better about myself.

LadyBeagleEyes · 17/09/2011 13:11

Good for you for giving up emma.
I've smoked for longer than 30 years and my attempts to stop have so far have been unsuccessful.
But during those times, I would still go outside with the smokers, just for the company.
And I never even attempted to judge people that did smoke, it was none of my business.
Hope you keep it up, Never Ever think that you are safe just to have the one.
That has always been my downfall. Smile

emmanana · 17/09/2011 13:40

Have you tried Champix Lady Beagle? I was the most addicted smoker ever (would smoke through bronchitis, throat infections etc) It worked for me.

pink4ever · 17/09/2011 13:52

I hate smoking with a vengence. Was brought up in a family of smokers. Both my gps died directly due to smoking. I have told this story before on mn but will tell it again-
I was a low birth weight baby because my mum smoked heavily when she was pregnant. I in turn gave birth to a low birth weight baby even though I have never smoked-so my mums smoking not only affected me but also my dsSad.

I appreciate nicotine is addcitive and I admire people who try to give up. My gm finally gave up for good at the age of 75-she died 2 years later so obvioulsy the damage was done but she did not die beholden to nicotine.

I have never had a relationship with anyone who smoked-the thought repulses me as I have a very low tolerance for the smoke-cough my guts up and feel nauseous-bit weird seeing as I was exposed so much to it in childhood?.

edam · 19/09/2011 12:02

Be careful with champix if you are on any prescribed medicine. It can interact with some drugs (I was going to take it but then discovered it's bad news with my regular medicine.)
