by Top Shop

For anyone who can't follow the link, or would rather not give the traffic and just believe instead, it's a tshirt that reads 'Nice New Girlfriend. What breed is she?'

OP posts:
TheBride · 14/09/2011 14:16

Wasn't it the CEO of Topman who basically said (to the press) that TopMan is where you buy a suit for your first court appearance (and he didn't mean as a barrister)

Mandy2003 · 14/09/2011 14:26

That I'm Sorry But shirt is vile.

I read the OP's example in the same way as Pusporn I will agree. But no item of clothing should contain a statement that can be interpreted as calling women dogs.

IMO you wouldn't even buy these shirts at the seaside in Ibiza etc so what makes TopMan think they will sell here?

Illegitimate · 14/09/2011 14:34

Their twitter and facebook reply: We have received some negative feedback regarding two of our printed T-shirts. Whilst we would like to stress that these T-shirts were meant to be light-hearted and carried no serious meaning we have made the decision to remove these from store and online as soon as possible. We would like to apologise to those who may have been offended by these designs.

good to see them removed

Harecare · 14/09/2011 14:40

I can't see many of them selling. Not especially funny. Would make the wearer look highly unattractive to say the least. Pointless really.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 14/09/2011 14:45

Wow. That's great. Topshop still twits for making them in the first place.

PamBeesly · 14/09/2011 14:47

That is disgusting, if I saw anyone wear that I'd just think he was a fucker

MumblingRagDoll · 14/09/2011 14:49

Shall we just moan about it here or have a word with them?

MumblingRagDoll · 14/09/2011 14:50

Ooh missed Illegitemate and her post! Great news.

Idiots.

SouthernFriedTofu · 14/09/2011 14:54

well its currently soldout so clearly some people think they are funny, unless that's to do with them pulling the shirts? Although wouldn't they take down the page too?

It definitly isn't meant to be racist just sexist and stupid. I do like to keep the really stupid people obviously labeled and if they choose to do it for me- hell makes my job easier.

Blu · 14/09/2011 14:56

The important thing is to make sure that girls have the confidence and understanding to realise that the wearer has shit for brains and to avoid him - and not fall for any 'lighten up' or 'it's just a laugh' crap and be persuaded to laugh along with it all.

If a son of mine came home with something like that, thinking it was funny to call women bitches, I would say 'I think it's funny to treat humans like dogs too' and kick him out to live in the yard in a kennel.

Blu · 14/09/2011 14:58

x-posted with this "Whilst we would like to stress that these T-shirts were meant to be light-hearted and carried no serious meaning we have made the decision to remove these from store and online as soon as possible. We would like to apologise to those who may have been offended by these design"

You see, that pisses me off. Good that they have been withdrawn, but it isn't really an apology or an admission that it was OK - 'it was light hearted' oh, I see, the proble, is our lack of humour, is it? And not 'sorry we had this lapse of taste, decency and sense' but 'sorry YOU were offended' (well why wouldn't any sensible woman be?). Weasly.

Hullygully · 14/09/2011 14:59

nice

TobyLeWolef · 14/09/2011 15:00

I really wish people would stop banging on about these t-shirts. They are moronic slogans for a 'certain type of man'.

Topman have been given so much free publicity today, and so many hits to their website. It is a major PR coup for them.

FFS stop whining.

glitterkitten · 14/09/2011 15:04

pusporn pointed out;

It's not for the "him" it's for the "her" - it's aimed at girls who have been dumped and the boy has a new girl - the "breed" thing is supposed to insult the new girl by calling her a dog/bitch and basically "look at me, I am so much better than her and yet you dumped me for the bitch/dog" (which really would only reinforce an intelligent boy's knowledge that he made the right decision I think...)

Is that correct?? (i.e that it's a woman's tee shirt?)

SinicalSal · 14/09/2011 15:05

if you don't like it don't buy it. Simples!

nah, only messing.

Toby, Topman hardly need publicity and a pr coup, especially on a mum's website, so I think I'll keep whining if it's all the same to you.

SouthernFriedTofu · 14/09/2011 15:08

I don't thiink it's a woman's t shirt. It is being sold in mens sizes on a male dummy/model by topman not topshop

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 14/09/2011 15:10

Why does Topman need to make an apology, for goodness sakes? They're not sorry, they're reacting to market demand, they've removed the t-shirts. I think it's actually a good thing when idiots decide to label themselves, saves me making assumptions.

I wonder if everybody got the joke anyway, it wasn't very obvious to me or to some others?

Insomnia11 · 14/09/2011 15:11

They did it entirely for the publicity. Any publicity is good publicity.

TobyLeWolef · 14/09/2011 15:11

Really, SinicalSal? Have you never had a business before? All businesses need publicity. And all publicity is good publicity.

SinicalSal · 14/09/2011 15:14

To be quite honest Toby I've never run a household name multimillion pound international business before. Maybe that's why I think publicity (esp negative) is not quite the holy grail for Topman as it would be to Sinical Sal's Farmhouse Jams. Jmo, though.

They are both still there on their website...

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 14/09/2011 15:22

Agrees with Insomnia and Wolef, it's all publicity, all grist to the mill, Topman don't care and those t-shirts, if pulled from sale will put them in the realm of super-desirable, rarity, items - just like 'Frankie Goes to Hollywood's' 'Relax', which Radio 1 refused to play...

minimisschief · 14/09/2011 15:25

Where is everyones sense of humor?

TobyLeWolef · 14/09/2011 15:28

I don't think this is a humour issue. I think it's universally recognised, whether you're on the "Outraged of Tunbridge Wells" bench or the "Bravo, Topman, on the free publicity" bench, that these slogans are not amusing in the slightest.

I don't even really understand the dog one. I mean, I get the gist, but it's not instant like it needs to be for a funny slogan on a t-shirt.
