To think that a lunch hour

At work, should be at a time at least somewhere around lunchtime? I have to have my breakfast at 7am (dropping dc off at 2 different places) - I'm STARVING by the time my rota'd lunchbreak comes up at 1.30pm. We aren't allowed to have snacks in between either. Is it just because I'm still bf'ing my 7mo in the evening and through the night? Am I abnormal that by 12.30pm, my stomach is growling SO loudly that customers comment on it?? Blush. I had porridge for breakfast, so a hearty breakfast not a weedy cereal bar.

when i worked in a supermarket the rules were 6 hours before you were entitled to a 30 min break. (i seem to remember someone saying legal min is 30 mins lunch break, so any company that gives you an hour is generous!)

They would rota us all on 5.5 hour shifts so we did not have to have a break. So if i worked 4-9.30 i would be ravenous by the time i finished - especially when i worked near the bakery.

God, that's rough! I have my brekkie at 6.30 and at my desk by 7. I'm usually hungry again by 9!

Do you not even get a drink during that time? One that you can drink on the go

Porridge at 7 wouldn't keep me going until 1:30.

Do as others suggest and take something to eat on the way and pack a couple of cereal bars.

In retail, starting at 930 and getting lunch at 130 is reasonable. I would be trying to scoff something before I started, even if it is in the car. As a retail manager, I dont plan breaks for when my staff have had breakfast, I plan them around the amount of staff on and the needs of the business.
Do you get a morning tea break?

No I couldn't last that long. I have my breakfast around 7.30 and I am starving at 12

I start work at 8.15am and have breakfast about 7am. I get my lunch at 11.45am to 12.15pm. Then we finish at 3.55pm. I'm lucky I can grab a drink or something quickly to eat if needed. It has taken me a while to work out what works for me.

How about a meal replacement drink? They can't stop you having a drink, that's illegal....

Report
squeakytoy · 13/09/2011 17:39

The OP is only on the shop floor for 4 hours fruitilla, if she eats something immediately before starting work, there should be no need for her to eat again before her lunch break.

I'd put a snack in my pocket/bag and eat it in the loo.

Or take a portable breakfast and eat it just before I start instead of at 7am.

I sympathise with you Op. I really think you should be having 15 mins at 10.30, lunch at 1.30 and another 15 mins at, say, 3.30.

It sucks, shame you're on probation still or I would say hide food in the stock room! That's the only way I used to get through.

I second the idea of a full 'meal' type breakfast though. So porridge, banana and a boiled egg and toast perhaps?

I think I would have to get up at 5am to do cooked food at breakfast time. I have to get DD out of the door at 8am (one of her friends knocks for her, then they seem to collect the whole class on the way to school). 8.10am I'm on the bus to get DS1 & DS2 to school. 8.35am drop them in class, then back on the bus to the nursery. Drop DS3 off at nursery at 8.55-ish. Then back on the bus, get off outside work at 9.25am. THAT'S why I can't breakfast at work, and why I have to eat so early - busy tanking up DS3 with bf's between 7.30am and 8am.

No drinks allowed on shop floor. You are 'technically' allowed a break for water - will use that as an excuse to snarf a cereal bar or something. I can't get up any earlier than I do, either - I get up at 6.30am, my day ends when DS3 has his 1am bf. Am doing housework up until then - it's got to be done at some point. Right now, I'm waiting to get 13yo DD to bed so that I can do the washing up and the ironing for tomorrow. I am feeding DS3 as well, hence sitting on my arse on MN for 5 mins to have a break!!

I start work at 6am and sometimes have to work through till 2.30pm - you have it made Wink

I get that you're hungry but I dont think 1.30's unreasonable- in fact it sounds lovely.

Just read your last post - why are you waiting for 13 year old to go to bed Confused????

get on with what you need to and sit down love - don;t make life any harder than it needs to be.

You've been there 2 days and you're moaning?
Normal to be hungry for the first couple of days into a new routine, it's your body adjusting to not being able to eat whenever you like. I'm a teacher, and we are all starving in September! Soon settles.

I don't eat breakfast but when I did (back in the long ago BF days when I was always hungry) I used to find a couple of slices of wholegrain bread with peanut butter and topped with sliced banana kept me full for hours - maybe worth a try? (I will confess that on many several occasions, I used to wrap it in foil and eat it on the bus to work as I'd run out of time at home!)

I too wonder why you are waiting for a 13 year old to go to bed...and why don't you go to sleep and get up for the 1am feed? there's no need to wait up surely? How old is DS3?

You just seem to be making life a bit difficult for yourself.

Eat on the bus

Report

Agree with pointydog, i was just about to sy eat on the bus. And your DD can help with housework at 13, not add to your hassle!

Bellavita · 13/09/2011 21:27

13yr old DD should have done the washing up for you! It is DS1's job to load/unload the dishwasher.

Report
northernruth · 13/09/2011 21:31

I'd be making a sandwich to eat on the bus. Have a banana when you get up if you are starving to put you on (that way you might save a bit of time and could poss lie in a bit longer!!!!)

Agree about DD tho, both putting herself to bed and helping out. I was doing the ironing at 12. With a busy day and up at 6.30 you should be going to bed before 11 and getting some shut eye before DS wakes for a 1am feed (or wake him for a dream feed at half ten????)

try and make sure you eat some protein at breakfast - even if it's just chopped nuts on porridge, it will keep you full for longer

Eat on the bus. Buy the thirteen year old an alarm clock. Why does she need help to get to bed? Fair enough if she has SN though.
