to think that if 9/11 had happened anywhere else we wouldn't be remembering it ten years on?

... or probably even one year on.

I am not taking away from how horrific it was for all who were directly affected.

But if it had been anywhere but America the world would have moved on and we wouldn't be facing wall-to-wall coverage ten years on. Even if it had been the UK only the UK would be remembering.

It's totally off topic anyway Kerry and it's really inappropriate to be spouting your IMO ridiculous theories on this thread.

wannaBe · 10/09/2011 23:38

flinging insults on either side never shows anyone in a positive light.

This was never meant to be a remembrance thread - there is one on MN though, but maybe you shouldn't go and ruin it? Stick to this one (or pref none at all....)

Sookeh · 10/09/2011 23:41

I'm not trying to be insulting, honestly.

I just feel like Kerry is being deliberately offensive.

Whatever, I'll bow out now.

I still do think the OP has a point. But then AFAIK more Brits died on 9/11 than all the people who died on 7/7, so I think perhaps it may be that that makes it so memorable in the sense the OP is stating.

Or the overall sheer number of people who died.

But whatever the reason, I do agree that the 9/11 anniversary is likely to be more 'marked' than the anniversaries of other atrocities/disasters. I'm not saying that it's because it was a predominantly American tragedy, but I do see what the OP meant.

Sookeh · 10/09/2011 23:42

I was the one that said it was a remembrance thread Blush

I'm tired and upset now and worded what I was trying to say poorly.

But yeah, bowing out.

bemybebe · 10/09/2011 23:43

"I find you too aggressive in tone for an actual discussion about this."

LDN please give me an example, so that i can correct myself in the future.

Is it my:
"LDN - from dictionary ACTIVITY: a specific deed, action, function, or sphere of action.

If you choose to associate my words with playgroup it is your problem and, indeed, very telling.

You know, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and all that..."

in response to yours "Sorry but what are 9/11 activities? You make it sound like a party event, which is very telling IMO."

Very weird.

Portofino · 10/09/2011 23:43

I don't go for the conspiracy theories myself, but I don't agree with the resulting wars. There was NO reason to go to Iraq, and whilst the Taliban rule is abhorrent, why is up to us in UK to solve? Via warfare at least.

MyGoldfishIsEvil · 10/09/2011 23:43

Soory Sookeh love, wasn't talking against you. Kerrymumbles was being a twat :)

MyGoldfishIsEvil · 10/09/2011 23:45

But Portofino, you don't have t agree with the resulting wars - I don't that's for sure.

BUt they are a part of our recent history - hugely relevant.

relevant to what? 9/11?

MyGoldfishIsEvil · 10/09/2011 23:47

Relevant to us (I'm talking about the UK here)

MyGoldfishIsEvil · 10/09/2011 23:48

Sorry, relevant to us in the uK, in that it has had such an impact on our lives. Maybe not necessarily as individuals, but as a country.

MrsCornish · 10/09/2011 23:49

i agree with OP and think those that don't, don't understand her point.

scottishmummy · 10/09/2011 23:49
