to think that no-one knows how to hold a knife & fork anymore - YOU DON'T HOLD THE KNIFE LIKE A PENCIL

...It doesn't make you look 'ladylike' when you hold your cutlery like knitting needles/pencils with a stupid pinchy grip. It makes you look like a pleb.

When, pray, did this momentous change take place and WHY??? I see it everywhere and it makes me worry for the future of our children who will all look like cack-handed imbeciles if they grow up to eat like that.

Worse than holding a knife like a pencil is holding the fork in one hand and then using said same hand to pick up food from the plate.

I occasionally wonder if my DH was raised by wolves.

Woderwick01 · 27/07/2016 21:07

I must say there is a right and a wrong way to do anything and the amount of people that hold their knife like a pencil makes me so sad because it's the WRONG way...

kurlique · 27/07/2016 21:14

The saddest thing Woderwick is that holding your knife like a pencil is relatively civilised nowadays and I never thought I would say that (& it does still make me wince a bit) but in comparison with those who hold their cutlery protruding sideways out of a clenched fist... And lick their knives between mouthfuls... Pencil holders look genteel!

WaitrosePigeon · 27/07/2016 21:17

Zombie fucking cunty thread! Gods sake sort it out MN

ghostyslovesheep · 27/07/2016 21:23

Woderwick01

Z-O-M-B-I-E A-L-E-R-T Hmm

LolBeansandSalad · 27/07/2016 21:29

I know this is a zombie thread but could someone please show a pic of holding the knife the wrong way?!

I see this phrase 'like a pen/ pencil' a lot, but I genuinely don't know if I do it the right way or the wrong way! I don't think I hold it like a pencil but... I'm not sure Confused

ivykaty44 · 27/07/2016 21:35

I have students from around the world and some do eat with their fingers, they are certainly not savages. When coming to my home they often pick up a knife and they are often very nervous.

One student taught my daughter the correct way to eat with fingers

HeyRobot · 27/07/2016 22:05

I have a colleague who hklp - I notice because she eats her lunch out of her lunch box like that. I assumed it was because of the sides of the box made it hard to get in there. I'm more bothered about her sandwich technique, which is to tear small pieces off and then cover her mouth with her hand so we don't see her chewing.

LolBeansandSalad · 27/07/2016 22:09

I googled ivy but still not clear Grin

Right, I guess I hold my knife like this:

Break it to me, I can take it

to think that no-one knows how to hold a knife & fork anymore - YOU DON'T HOLD THE KNIFE LIKE A PENCIL
HeyRobot · 27/07/2016 22:23

You're all being unreasonable, by the way. How can you care about such a trivial matter when people have really awful things to put up with? DP's whole family hold their cutlery in their fists, and with the fork pointing back towards themselves. I will swap them for any hklp-er you can find. I am genuinely concerned that I will have to correct DD at some point and offend everyone.

ivykaty44 · 27/07/2016 22:27

Lolbeansalad

It's much more interesting learning about how to sit to the floor and eat, plate sharing and eating with your fingers Grin

ivykaty44 · 27/07/2016 22:30
. Just for you lolbeansalad Wink
todayiamhotandfedup · 27/07/2016 22:33

I was always told you hold your knife in the dominant hand, as it is potentially a weapon and you must have optimal control when using it.

LolBeansandSalad · 27/07/2016 22:38

THANK YOU!!

I'm so happy to learn I'm doing it right Grin

as an aside though, I don't think I've ever seen anyone holding it in the wrong ways- certainly not anyone gripping it in their fist like Fred Bloody Flintstone but not noticed the pencil thing either. I'll be looking out for it all the time now!

becciandbump · 27/07/2016 22:40

What other people do doesn't usually bother me... Their choice

StarryIllusion · 27/07/2016 22:54

I change which hand I use for which and how I hold them, depending on how much pain I am in with my joints at the time and I can honestly say that if anyone were to so much as comment on it, I'd be sorely tempted to put the fucking thing through their stuck up, condescending eyeball. Yes, thank you, I do know how to use them correctly but considering that the consequence for doing so is several hours of being unable to even wipe my own arse for the pain it causes in my wrists and fingers, I'll pass. Frankly Op, I think anyone who notices how other people hold their cutlery and comments/ judges them for it, is a bit of a pleb and clearly not very well brought up, however 'naicely' they may eat.

Careforadrink · 28/07/2016 01:27

It's pure ignorance to insist there is a right and wrong hand to hold a knife and fork in.

For the vast majority of left handers it is more natural to hold their knife in their left hand

To insist it's the other way is simply a throwback to when left handed people were forced at school to write with their right hand. It's beyond rude to make people do something in a manner which is against their basic instinct.

TrickyD · 28/07/2016 08:36

I'm lefthanded and never for a moment have I struggled with using a knife and fork the "proper" way round, nor has my lefthanded DGD. In other ways we are both very left orientated, writing, hitting a ball, catching etc. Because I am so used to normal scissors I always cut with my right hand. DGD has some lefthanded scissors which I find impossible to use.,

I can't believe lefties were still disapproved of thirty years ago. I was born in 1944 and, apart from my dad occasionally calling me "Left Keggie", no one ever seemed bothered.

Careforadrink · 28/07/2016 09:02

My father who attended school in the late fifties had his hand tied behind his back.

I was given exam tables for GCSEs in the 90s with the desk bit on the right hand side.

I've had lots of so called banter over the years but a lot of it is thinly veiled bullying.

I have little patience for sticklers who harp on about etiquette in this respect. Use whatever hand feels natural to hold the knife.

SantanaBinLorry · 28/07/2016 10:51

I know this is a zombie thread but...
what a bunch of judgy nupties. I find it awful that people are judged as inferior for this. My dyspraxic son eats this way with cutlery in the opposite hands to the 'norm' Its the only way he can do it comfortably without pushing his food all over the floor. He also rests his elbows on the table to help steady his arms. Makes me a bit sad that people would judge for this :(

CFSKate · 28/07/2016 11:47
PortiaCastis · 28/07/2016 11:51

A momentous change in the zombie OPs condescending attitude is far more important that judging and calling people imbeciles

BagPusscatnip · 28/07/2016 13:48

God you'd hate me OP. I can't hold my pencil properly (kind of hold it between my fingers) and I hold my knife and fork in the wrong hands and also hold them like weapons. I'm properly cack handed

ivykaty44 · 28/07/2016 14:02

Do you think the op will come back k to this thread five years on...? Grin
