To have been slightly disgusted by this?

I was waiting in a till queue today in a department store. Someone in the queue has a baby in a buggy and she looks about 13-14 months.

Her mum is feeding her a chicken nuggets Happy Meal from McDonalds. Don't really have a problem with the odd mcdonalds for children as it's not that unhealthy calorie wise and as long as it's only once in a while. I did think it a bit gross that she was feeding her while in a shop queue for the tills though. Although the child was old enough to chew some solid food, the mum wasn't giving it straight to her. She chewed up the fries and pieces of nugget in her mouth first, spat it out into her hand and then fed it to the child.

Is this normal? Please feel free to enlighten me as I don't yet have children. I felt slightly sick watching it! The till operater didn't look too impressed when she served her and took cash from the hands she spat food into to.

Wow, respect to all the African ladies! You must be much better Much better Mums than me because there is no way I could do that without throwing up!

My Gran, used to chew up food for her kids, she raised 14 of them before blenders?Hipp were invented.

worraliberty · 07/09/2011 23:24

It doesn't make them much better Mums imo...but it does mean they have excellent gag stopping reflexes lol!

spudulika · 07/09/2011 23:26

"and then comparing it to oral sex between two consenting adults!! What the actual fuck!"

It's a salty bodily fluid which you take into your mouth. They are both mucousy.

Sorry - I dont' see why one is more intrinsically disgusting than the other. Baby snot really doesn't taste any worse than spunk. Better actually. Much better.

spudulika · 07/09/2011 23:27

winny - I did have a snot sucker, but it wasn't as effective as using my mouth. My baby used to fight it - just disliked the sensation of having something hard put up his nose.

bemybebe · 07/09/2011 23:30

i wish i did not open this thread...

LDNmummy · 07/09/2011 23:32

I suppose it depends on where I am, I would be courteous enough to probably use the baby changing or other private place to do it. If I was in a situation where I had no choice, like on a plane or travelling long distance in a car, I definitely would.

Would not do it in a restaurant although I might try that once just to see if I am brave enough Grin

Feels like I'm talking about breast feeding now!

Morloth · 07/09/2011 23:36

I have chewed food for my babies. Like a piece of meat, break it down a little with the front teeth before handing it over, so no, it doesn't gross me out, makes perfect sense.

For snot though, I use a tissue.

fourkids · 07/09/2011 23:51

LDNmummy,

Ah, ok. How right you are. I googled in response, and found only your image. However, if you add "penis" to the search, you get a few more. But mostly they belong to animals...

Enough methinks...

FunnysInTheGarden · 08/09/2011 11:22

what is wrong with a tissue?

switchtvoffdosomelessboring · 08/09/2011 12:17

Funny gardens, constant wiping with tissues gives them sore and red noses.

I'm was quite happy to suck the snot of my tiny babies noses, but only when they were tiny babies and only my own. The though of other peoples babies bogeys - eerrgg. And toddler snot [vomit]

G1nger · 08/09/2011 12:25

I could really do without the spunk comparisons.

MrsPommelhorse · 08/09/2011 12:32

She handed money to the cashier with the hand she had spat food into? How is that acceptable?! And why are so many people saying it's fine?! Fine, chew up food for your baby - but in a queue in a shop, that's pretty weird.

Plus, anyone eating takeaway food in a department store deserves a funny look. If feeding time couldn't wait, then go outside and come back in later.

God, everyone is so eager to defend other people's unacceptable behaviour in case they get accused of being judgey.

Humph.

woowoo2 · 08/09/2011 12:52

re the snot sucking - do the mums then (womiting emoticon) swallow to snot?

atosilis · 08/09/2011 14:12

I can't believe you attach that baby vacuum thing to a household vacuum. If you did that with ours, the entire contents of the baby would come out.

ruletheworld · 08/09/2011 14:15

I bite grapes in half if I'm out and don't have a knife!!! I must be gross too!

Gingefringe · 08/09/2011 14:28

I was going to take the kids to McDonalds this afternoon but the snot sucking and smeggy willys have somehow put me off!!

Is the snot sucking an African thing?

A1980 · 08/09/2011 23:26

My Gran, used to chew up food for her kids, she raised 14 of them before blenders?

I don't get this either: you don't need a blender to mash or soften food for a baby. Did a fork and a sieve not exist when your gran had children?

Many easy ways to mash food without a blender or your mouth. Mouths are actually teeming with bacteria too.

Anyone got any handy hints how to clear up my regurgitated breakfast from the floor / walls / carpet? Snot sucking is - no, I can't even bring myself to discuss it.

Ripeberry · 09/09/2011 08:12

Well, it must be a traditional thing. Passed down the generations. If you have no cloths or tissues, how are you supposed to get snot out.
But....yuck.
That should be one tradition to let die out!

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 09/09/2011 08:14

I was a snot sucker [proud]. My DD was resistant to the bulb thing so it seemed logical to me.
Baby snot much preferable to man jizz.

TurkeyBurgerThing · 09/09/2011 08:14

I'm absolutely sure that I one read that this is how snogging originated!

lisad123 · 09/09/2011 08:18
