To think that people are writing 'lol' on here a lot more often...

and be irritated by it? I have plenty of friends who do it...I love them, but I do judge them slightly for it.

A friend of mine also lets his objection to LOL be known. His reason is that "technically 99% of people probably aren't actually laughing out loud" Bizzarely he uses "ha ha" which in my opinion, he probably isn't either which rather negates his argument Confused

Anyhow, I have no objections to it. It does puzzle me though, why people get so wound up about other peoples choice of words, expressions. And to actually spend time starting a thread about it is, to me, weird.

It's not like anyone is going to think "Oooh hang on, this person objects to xyz, that's something I do...so I'm going to stop doing it. For a random strangers sake..."

peggotty · 07/09/2011 12:17

ROAR can be a bit startling and ott though surely Jodie? Bringing to mind a gurning, manic lunatic as opposed to a completely impassive automaton? It's needs to be somewhere in the middle!

ChippingIn · 07/09/2011 12:18

Oh - I agree it shouldn't be used when you wouldn't actually be laughing.

worraliberty · 07/09/2011 12:18

It's not like anyone is going to think "Oooh hang on, this person objects to xyz, that's something I do...so I'm going to stop doing it. For a random strangers sake..."

But that's the thing. I've read more than one person saying they don't use 'lol' on here because people don't like it.

That's mad...I mean apart from the fact it's only 3 letters, where would they stop trying to please other people? When they have nothing left but basic words? Confused

Then no doubt their grammar would be picked on Grin

goatinacoat · 07/09/2011 12:21

But we don't really need lol on here, surely? We have Grin which I much prefer.

JodieHarsh · 07/09/2011 12:21

Pegotty that is troo. It needs to be reserved for the truly hilair.

I quite like .

And I have been known to expostulate 'Har!'.

However, I am fairly certain there is a direct correlation between the frequency with which the term 'lol' is used, the scatterings of 'hun', the delivery of , and the tendency to wear Ugg boots

Worra's anarchic usage exempted from this theory, of course Grin

shakey1500 · 07/09/2011 12:24

worra how strange! No way would I tailor my posting style because others' didn't like it. Hey ho.

Now LOOOOL I don't get. Is that Laugh out out out out loud? Grin

RedOnion · 07/09/2011 12:31

Have to ask, what does ROAR mean?

silverten · 07/09/2011 12:40

Right Of Admission Reserved.

Confused
JodieHarsh · 07/09/2011 12:51

I always thought it meant roaring with laughter, and you capitalise it because you are laughing so loud.

I am prepared to accept being hilariously wrong, like the time I thought the Orient Express went all the way to China.

Insomnia11 · 07/09/2011 12:55

I don't mind it, unless excessively used, or passive-aggressively used.

Though I quite like "arf" or "ha ha ha ha".

LRDTheFeministDragon · 07/09/2011 12:56

I don't care for 'lol' but the 'it's all gone shite lately' tone of the OP is daft.

Yea, verily, we live in a time of brass, looking back to the golden age before loling, we are shrunken wrecks of former glory, for the old world hath passed away ...

Hmm
Insomnia11 · 07/09/2011 12:56

I also quite like LMFAO

Laughing My effing/Fat Arse off. Quite sardonic in tone.

LRD I don't think 'it's all gone shite lately', just that I'm seeing a lot more lolling when people almost certainly aren't laughing at all. And I have no clue what a time of brass might be, it doesn't sound that great...

worraliberty - I haven't told you what to do. What I told you was that it is childish to deliberately annoy people is childish and that if you are old enough to have children, you should not act like one. That was in reference to your earlier post (below).

worraliberty Wed 07-Sep-11 11:52:22
I think I use it more here for that very reason.
When I was as newbie, some twat told me to 'stop using lol or get off my thread'. From that minute on, I used it like punctuation on the end of every sentence Grin

mummymccar · 07/09/2011 15:59

I never used to mind it at all until an acquaintance of mine decided to voice his objection to it by saying 'lol' instead of laughing all the time in RL. I only lasted 5 minutes before I wanted to punch him.
That was a few years ago though and doesn't really bother me anymore.

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 07/09/2011 16:13

I'm with dragontalk. It's annoying and unnecessary and as others have said, blatantly untrue the majority of the time. And more than one use in a sentence or indeed post means you should fuck off back to nethuns that I definitely lose respect interest.

I like and sometimes

MardyBra · 07/09/2011 16:23

I'm not fond of it, particularly when used as punctuation lol Wink

I also try to avoid ROFL and LMAO too.

However, sometimes, I feel the need to tell people that I have genuinely lolled.

Posters who tend to lol a lot usually lack punctuation, don't use paragraphs and often have unimaginative user names, but best not go there again after last week's thread.

usualsuspect · 07/09/2011 16:26

I won't fuck off to NMs because some of you don't like lolling

LadyBeagleEyes · 07/09/2011 16:34

lol Usual Grin

NodsSmilesandBacksAway · 07/09/2011 16:36

lol

just the same as all the other daft abbreviations - and a lot more sensible as most of them :)
