To wished I'd bought Iron On labels

I'm sitting sewing in name labels, its taking ages 6 shirts, 4 trousers, PE Kits, new coat, why oh why didn't I just buy iron ons?

Trousers have to be taken up too.

The coat cost £75 so have to sew in the regulation one at the back of the neck then a couple of hidden ones too.

So are you an iron on or a sew in?

Sew on ones. I sit in front of the telly and do them. And once your children are old enough you can teach them how to do it too.

I would much rather do that than stand slaving over a hot iron.

I use iron-on for socks and tights. Other than that, I sew in. We have to have giant name tapes on the outside of PE kits, lab coats and aprons.

What do all you marker-pen and iron-on people do when clothes are outgrown? Do they go to the second hand uniform or the charity shop with your child's name in or just in the bin? Although DS has benefited from a few coats that have a several reminders of their previous owners written inside.

I think our school has gone a bit OTT with embroidered items TBH for the same reason, they can't be recycled or passed on anywhere except to school and people don't always want one marked with another name.

taggits for socks, swimsuits and cuddly toys (or ink transfer ones for socks and cheap polo shirts which I have no intention of handing on to anyone). Sew-in ones for the rest (do it in front of the TV - quite relaxing, really) and giant ones for sports kit, bags, etc.

just write name in biro on the garment label

PeneloPeePitstop · 21/09/2011 21:04

Following uniform thefts at my local primary (certain parents were peeling off iron on labels and acquiring brand new uniform for free for their little darlings) I grit my teeth and sew.

Achy fingers but hey I don't have to buy new uniform.

I never even thought of doing socks Blush does everyone do them?

stealthsquiggle · 21/09/2011 21:22

hiccymapops - once I send DD in with un-named socks. That evening I got a huge diatribe about how she was last to change from PE because she couldn't find her socks and how "in the end I had to wear spare ones" - which were hers, of course.

I don't often bother with DS's socks nowadays but school spot-checks and tuts if socks are un-named Hmm

Right, I'll get on it and order labels. Think I'll go with those iron ones that blend in, my sharpie won't work in socks Grin.

Hummymummy · 22/09/2011 09:19

I've used these ones: www.easy2name.com/custom-clothing-labels.htm
The iron on clothing labels have stayed put for more than a year (so youngest daughter wears oldest daughter's t-shirts - poor child!).
The stick on labels stay put on water bottles etc, even after the dish washer.
The shoe labels stay put and have to get pulled off when we take the shoes to the charity shop / recycle bin.
Therefore I would recommend these.
(I also have a pile of sew in labels - my mother uses these when she helps me out!)

Have discussed the sock issue with ds1's teacher this morning, and she said not to worry, she's taught them all to put socks in shoes. I think I love her Grin.
