To wished I'd bought Iron On labels

I'm sitting sewing in name labels, its taking ages 6 shirts, 4 trousers, PE Kits, new coat, why oh why didn't I just buy iron ons?

Trousers have to be taken up too.

The coat cost £75 so have to sew in the regulation one at the back of the neck then a couple of hidden ones too.

So are you an iron on or a sew in?

I have spent the Summer advertising my services to do this through the LYS and have been pleased with the results. Mind you my fave was a phone call from the shop asking if I could do an emergency embroidery on a PE bag... just cannot get over embroidery and emergency in the same sentence :)

blackeyedsusan · 05/09/2011 22:15

biro 'nuff said

AitchTwoOh · 05/09/2011 22:18

i do not understand this at all... all high st and supermarket school clothes nowadays actually have a space on the label for name and class. a fabric pen does the trick.

wellthatsdoneit · 05/09/2011 22:19

Yes, but some Dastardly Parents cut those labels out and claim them for their own! I read it on mumsnet so it must be true.

TuftyFinch · 05/09/2011 22:20

I havn't got an iron. I have got a Sharpie pen. I have got a needle and thread. I havn't got much patience. Sharpie.

SE13Mummy · 05/09/2011 22:30

I use these iron-on transfers, they are like tattoos for fabric. For shirts etc. I don't put them onto the washing instructions label at all but just below the collar, inside the shirt.

One thing I would say to all the labellers out there... please show your children where you have labelled each item of clothing. It may sound ridiculous but not every member of a class of 30 will know that a parent has labelled their clothes at all which means that they don't check that the clothes they are putting on actually belong to them.

Laundry Pen Laundry pen Laundry pen. . I used sew-on nametapes once, with my PFB, then graduated to Iron-on ones, and for the last 6 years, I just buy a laundry pen from WH Smiths. Last years' one was a sharpie one, not as good, this years' one is a Pentel one, and it's absolutely excellent. It takes no time at all. But then, I do have 3 dc that are at school, and DS3 to look after, by the time you have 3/4 dc, you find the easy route...

CoffeeIsMyFriend · 08/09/2011 10:19

have labelled (nearly) everything and am just about to do DS socks with a laundry pen.

Bramshott · 08/09/2011 10:23

Ah but if you do iron ons, you have to keep buying new labels, whereas with sew-in ones you just cut them out and re-use them. DD1 is in Y4 and we're still on our first pack of labels.

startail · 08/09/2011 10:26

I thought I was the only one who put extra names in case of theft.
I do on DD1s jumpers because they are stupidly expensive.

PGTip · 08/09/2011 10:28

I fold the sew on labels in half then 2 stitches and it's done.

Oh I put this on another thread please label any non uniform that goes in for walks, trips or PE.
I sorted the lost property at the end of term and we were left with decent track suites and jeans as well as a lot of tatty uniform jumpers.

CurrySpice · 08/09/2011 10:32

If you'v got sew on labels, you don't have to sew all round.

Fold them in half and stitch the two ends to the label in a loop iykwim.

CurrySpice · 08/09/2011 10:32

Ooops x post with PG Tip

Or buy these taggits

Rowena8482 · 08/09/2011 11:25

Gulps at £75 for a coat! I would superglue it to his body if I'd had to pay that, ANd he would be totally naked under it as that would be the clothing budget for all three of them (minus shoes) blown in one fell swoop! no2 son once lost his brand new school coat on the very first day of term, this is why his younger siblings get ones we could just about afford to lose if it came to it - so far so good and fingers crossed we haven't lost anything more than one jersey last year yet... (and I am a biro mam lol, I just write our names in the inside sleeves of everything)

Chocolategirl3 · 08/09/2011 12:24

I used taggits for years they are fantastic I just didnt get round to ordering in time (I forgot) so bought iron on ones this year.

They have melded with the fabric that they are ironed on and look like they are there for good!

Oh and when I was ironing my DD pe top the iron spat a dirty splodge out so I had to wash it and the iron on label stayed put.

JaneBennet · 08/09/2011 12:35

Another vote for mynametags, absolutely fabulous and we haven't had one failure in the 4 years we've been using them.

PGTip · 08/09/2011 14:10

Ooh I like taggits (off to order some now)

betterwhenthesunshines · 08/09/2011 14:36

Have had all sorts here! Cost a fair amount, but never lost anything yet ( 2 DCs and 6 yrs of school so far....)

Sewing takes a while, but you know they're there for good - some iron on ones do peel off.

CoffeeIsMyFriend · 08/09/2011 19:36

£1 per item. Even I would happily sew/iron for that per item. Might start a new business.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 08/09/2011 19:42

Sharpie permanent marker on the how to wash label. Am I bad?

mumblecrumble · 08/09/2011 19:55

just ordered more taggits :) They are the best thing ever for kids labels

Debs212 · 21/09/2011 20:25

We used these little button ones this year: www.easy2name.com/no-iron-no-sew.htm

Very neat and clear - I'll let you know at the end of the year if they have stayed on ok!
