you usually spend when you pop to the Co-Op on a Monday afternoon when you've run out of milk, and end up seeing a few other bits you need, then DS1 asks for a magazine, then you remember you wanted stamps, etc. I just want to compare and see if I'm spending too much on these outings. Thanks.

I usually go in for milk
Then I'm tempted by a chicken and bacon prepackaged sandwich
Then a packet of nik naks to go with said sandwich
Then wine because it's been that sort of a day which it always is

spiderslegs · 05/09/2011 20:44

True Izzy it's a fecker & you try getting eight legged trousers. You can't.

bibbitybobbityhat · 05/09/2011 20:47

I did this today. It was Sainsburys not co-op, but anyway managed to spend over £40. I got dinner for tonight and the minced beef for dinner tomorrow and a few bits for packed lunches. And some cat food.

I am eternally grateful I no longer live opposite a Waitrose for this exact reason.

Because it was my local shop....a pint of milk and a loaf of bread normally cost around £43.29 after I had filled my basket with all the other unresistable things like deli salami and olives

DoMeDon · 05/09/2011 20:59

I went for milk then got some lovely prawns to go with that baguette and saw some shoes in the sale for £19 and remembered I needed lippy, 3 for 2 so was a saving even though I speat £17...

Someone help me Grin

WilsonFrickett · 05/09/2011 21:49

Valpllicella there is NO WAY I could live within walking distance of a Waitrose. I'd be bankrupt in a week not to mention the size of a house

CamperFan · 05/09/2011 22:23

Nevermind Waitrose, my local used to be an M&S Food!! Was a nightmare!

I actually started this thread in response to all the "how much do you save/earn/have in offshore bank account" threads. I wasn't actually interested. But I am now Grin.

Camper, I used to have an M&S Food opposite too!!

I have never been so pleased to see a shop close down Blush Grin

gillybean2 · 05/09/2011 22:32

popped out for milk and stiry fry veg today. They didn't have the stirfry veg so I ended up getting soup, french stick, quorn, cheese, a pineapple and milk... Spent about £10 so not too bad.

CamperFan · 05/09/2011 22:34

It's the main reason we moved. Not really, but I seriously never spent less than £30, no matter what I went in for. And there was just the two of us then as well.

About 80P!

That's only because I live in a village and walk down to the local shop, which sells local milk and there's not a lot in there I'd really want to buy, unless I was planning on picking up a loaf of pappy white bread for DS1, while I was there!!

NoNoNoMYDoIt · 06/09/2011 20:00

yesterday i went to tesco for blueberries, eggs and sprinkles.

i spent £41 on blueberries, eggs and sprinkles (3 different pots!). but also inexplicably strawberries, raspberries and bananas. and a cardigan for DD and pyjamas for DS. and 4 pairs of mittens for DD. and a baguette which DD mauled on the way round.

i did my week's shopping in aldi on friday for £39!! aldi had no blueberries; i forgot eggs, and they don't sell sprinkles. so that was the reason for the trip to tesco, where i managed to spend the same again on fripperies!

johnthepong · 06/09/2011 20:09

I used to do this ALL the time and it got us into trouble financially. Sometimes I would just go to Tescos because I was bored and come out £30 lighter. Now I just do one shop a week with LOADS of milk- and I also have a stash of UHT milk for these occasions. I also have 2 pints of milk in the freezer.
Our shopping bill has gone from about £700 per month to about £300!!

Valpollicella · 06/09/2011 23:59

And this is why I bloody hate superstore supermarkets Grin

In the old days (well, by that I mean 15 years ago?) if you went to buy bread and milk, you did just that. No extra fripperies, no temptation from the chorizo, the pj's, the toys, and so on to eternity.

Now you go and you pick things up 'just in case'....and most of the time they sit and rot in the fridge, or languish forgotten in a drawer.

And then you end up buying them again because they've probably gone off, or you've forgotten you bought a bumper pack of batteries/card for Auntie Jean's birthday in 3 months time/a present for cousin Sam.

Damn convenience under one roof....

Morloth · 07/09/2011 00:38

The trick with this stuff is to not have your wallet with you and to just put a fiver in your pocket.

DS1's school is next to a supermarket, I was getting into the habit of dropping in everyday and buying shit.

So I started leaving my bag at home and only taking my keys and a fiver.

Result, no more silly spending.
