To never ever in my whole life want to go on a package holiday AGAIN !!!!!

Before i start i'm fully prepared to admit my own stupidity in having even gone on this holiday.
we have just got back from a week in majorca in one of the more family orientated resorts,we had our main holiday earlier in the year and this was just a cheap and cheerful week to break up the school holidays a little.
Before we even took off we had to put up with youths swearing on the plane, badly behaved children climbing over seats and shouting and screaming whilst their parents remained seemingly oblivious.
Upon landing i realised benidorm is not a fictional tv comedy! I knew i wasnt going to get culture and the 'real' spain but did not expect to be in england still, surrounded by vicky polland and family.
I cant believe that people come to these places happily year after year as there were some 'normal' families there amongst the 'get here' brigade(if i had a pound for everytime i heard a parent shout this).
Before this holiday i hadnt been on a package holiday since 1996 and i can honestly say if i went again in the next 15 years it would be too bloody soon!

Oh, to be able to holiday once a year, never mind twice.

duckdodgers · 03/09/2011 21:25

Why area lot of people associating package holidays with just sitting by the hotel pool for a fortnight? In the past on the many package holidays I've been on yes I've did this, but I've also jumped on buses and went other places and hired cars and toured around to. And maybe I've just been lucky but I never seem to have encountered all the "loud" people others have, on holidays in Crete, Salou and Tunisia to name a few.

We drive to France now and hire a cottage with its own pool, bliss, but that's started because I didn't want the trauma of travelling on a plane with young kids, so now its 2 days in a car!!

We've saved for ages for this years holiday (of at the end of September) so to read an OP practically boasting that a week in Majorca is cheap and "not even" their main holiday leaves a nasty taste to this thread.

"We've saved for ages for this years holiday (of at the end of September) so to read an OP practically boasting that a week in Majorca is cheap and "not even" their main holiday leaves a nasty taste to this thread"

I couldn't agree more, duckdodgers

medmadness · 03/09/2011 21:34

I didnt put that to boast,it was to point out that as it was an extra and not our main holiday,it wasnt the end of the world that it was terrible as we had already been lucky enough to have had one.
However it was still pretty intolerable and i really feel that nobody should have to put up with these kind of people and imo it would be even worse for someone who had had to save all year for the week we have just had.

Purplegirlie · 03/09/2011 21:36

Well in future go to places where you won't bump into "these kind of people" then. I think you sound like a real snob actually.

medmadness · 03/09/2011 21:39

If being a snob is not wanting to mix with foul mouthed badly behaved idiots who either scream abuse at their children or completely ignore them whilst they wreck the place then i hold my hands up.

OP posts:
usualsuspect · 03/09/2011 21:41

I'm sure you won't be missed

mankymink · 03/09/2011 21:44

I don't want to bump into "these kinds of people" either but I'm not a snob. Nor have I had a holiday in years. Hope you enjoyed your 2.

Sorry. As you were.

Purplegirlie · 03/09/2011 21:44

No one says that foul mouthed badly behaved idiots screaming abuse at children are nice, but you've basically insinuated that everyone you've come across on your package holiday is the scum of the earth. And you've ensured that everyone knows that you didn't go on a nasty cheap little package holiday as your main holiday! When there are people on here that scrimp and save all year for a holiday, or some can't afford a holiday at all.

There are foul mouthed, badly behaved idiots everywhere. Like I said, you did choose a very commercial destination for your holiday which is going to be full of all different types of people, a percentage of these will be the type you described, yes, but not everyone that takes a package holiday is common and not everyone has the choice of picking and choosing as you seem to have!!

BimboNo5 · 03/09/2011 21:53

Thanks wellwisher.
sadly OP you will encounter 'these kind of people' in all walks of life, at theme parks, shopping centres, on trains etc. Best you stay indoors.

ledkr · 03/09/2011 22:42

ANyone who thinks its just the poor who misbehave on holiday should spend some time working as a chalet host in some of the top ski resorts. Very enlightening Grin

exoticfruits · 03/09/2011 22:50

You get what you pay for. You have to do your research on the resort, who it attracts and the hotel. You can have a perfectly nice holiday with nice people.

exoticfruits · 03/09/2011 22:52

I agree the 'hooray Henries' can be worse and arrogant with it.
I would avoid Rock, Cornwall, post GCSE's just as much as Benidorm.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 04/09/2011 02:34

Hmm, I've been with DH 10 years and we have only ever had one family holiday.

It was a week at Butlins. Partly funded by my parents, the rest funded by Tesco clubcard.

Apparently, the 'likes of us' should stay home anyway so my skintness has obviously done the public a service.

I'm only up this late btw, because I work around DH's shifts to manage childcare. But as we work our socks off but are still skint we are obviously hideous chavs who scream at our children.

Thanks for that.

naturalbaby · 04/09/2011 07:51

another vote for YABU for having 2 summer holidays and moaning about it. I'm sure you've got a lovely winter holiday booked to look forward to, or even an October 1/2 term one to avoid spending a week at home entertaining the kids.

VivaLeBeaver · 04/09/2011 08:20

I went on my first and last package holiday last year. Went to Egypt so I was hoping that we'd avoid too much rabble as it's a bit more expensive. Grin
I got beaten up by some scouse chavs at the pool when I pulled them up for calling my 9yo a fucking bitch to her face and threatening to hit her.

exoticfruits · 04/09/2011 08:25

It seems rather a strange post-all it means is that a company has made a package deal of the flights and hotels-which can often work out cheaper. To blame 'package holidays' because you chose a resort well known for being cheap and popular with the British is silly. You could have gone on a package holiday a few miles further down the coast and had a lovely time-but it would have cost you more. If you wanted a cheap holiday to break up the summer holiday you would do better in the UK with a tent.

notlettingthefearshow · 04/09/2011 08:26

Package holidays are fine if off season or in places that are not famous for cheap booze and clubbing!

magicmelons · 04/09/2011 08:35

VivaShock that's awful. Op yanbu. I shan't be doing them again either. We went back to a five star hotel that we had loved in Egypt, we'd been in winter before. The holiday started with the flight being delayed because some woman was hurling abuse at an air hostess because she had told her her husband was to large to sit in the seats by the exit. The pool had to be closed 3 times because someone had shit in it. there was dirty nappies left around the pool and I found myself watching other people's children. One couple had full on snogathons in the pool only breaking off so as she could scream profanities at her children.

On the plus side there was plenty of food on the buffets because most of the families were eating chips with riceHmm.

ssd · 04/09/2011 09:03

well op, thank god you already had your main holiday of the year and this package holiday was just a little extra

I'd hate to think you only had one holiday and it wasn't up to your exacting tastes

exoticfruits · 04/09/2011 09:14

If you go to somewhere like Morzine in France you won't have the least problem. You can have a lovely package holiday -ski resorts need to attract people in the summer.
I know that Trip Advisor isn't very accurate, but 5 mins on the computer before you booked would have given you a flavour and saved your money!

BakeliteBelle · 04/09/2011 09:30

I have been on several package holidays to Menorca with 'these kind of people'. Off season as I couldn't possibly afford to go in season.

Working class Brits generally know how to have a bit of fun and we love all that tacky entertainment and the pools have always been lovely. However, you can walk a few blocks away from the resort and find lovely local tapas bars, and take public transport to somewhere more culturally interesting, plus you get to rub shoulders with the locals. Or hire a car to break it up.

You take what you like and walk away from what you don't like but do your own independent research and get a resort that isn't too full-on

nomoreheels · 04/09/2011 09:42

I would never book a package holiday to Spain unless it was a private apartment or villa. I agree you could pay the same for hotel vs villa.

You could not pay me to go somewhere like Magaluf - it's hell on earth. Why would I want to travel all that way to see binge drinking idiots? We stayed in Illetes which was lovely. Stunning views, beautiful beach & an easy bus or taxi to Palma, which a fab city full of great bars, restaurants & culture (as well as some lame nightlife, but it's easily avoided.)

duckdodgers · 04/09/2011 09:45

Im still a bit [shocked] at all these stories of screaming wild people, shitting in pools and dirty nappies at the pool - I have never seen this and 2 of my holidays in the past have been to Magaluf (I was a lot younger Grin) and a family holiday in Benidorm when my eldest was younger.

I had a nice time in Benidorm but thats because we did a lot of exploring around the area, it really is beautiful. I dont think I would do a hotel there again though I would hire a villa somewhere else in the Costa Blanca like Morarira.

I agree with exotic fruits about what all a package holiday actually is and I agree with purple that what Op has implied is that all people who go on package holidays are for the "lower classes", daft really.

FabbyChic · 04/09/2011 09:54

Package holidays are fine if you pick the right location, you picked a location which is cheap, which is frequented by those who can only afford cheap holidays. What did you really expect?
