If your child's teacher was also a stripper and starred in a porn movie....

...And communicated with a number of students via text message, email and Facebook, would you be happy or not that they kept their job?

Do you think the decision to find this teacher guilty of unacceptable professional conduct... but to allow them to continue teaching, was a fair one?

I'm in two minds really as surely the kids would see a teacher like that as a bit of a joke now? Confused

Communicating with students outside of school is a big no-no but I don't think we can reasonably expect all teachers to have a squeeky clean past. Difficult one.

Thing is, it wasn't his past.

He was doing those jobs whilst working as a teacher too.

Some pupils saw the trailer for his porn movie on the internet.

Ban all Porn everywhere!
Until that happens, as he pointed out, none of what he did was illegal.
Bad form to communicate with students socially though, especially through FB. I don't suppose he used clips of his out of school activities as lesson materials though.

I agree that the communications were inappropriate. As regards, the stripping etc, I don't think he should have been reprimanded as he was doing something perfectly legal out of school hours. There is something puritanical about that which doesn't sit easy with me.
That being said, his authority as a teacher has now been compromised. Like to be a fly on the wall on his first day back at class- if indeed he intends returning.

Bad form to communicate with current students via Facebook, but quite usual once students have left - indeed desirable as a means of keeping in touch with them and providing references. As usual, it all depends on the detail doesn't it? You cant rely on news reports to be accurate, and if be was conmunicating with students who left in the summer for instance, that's not a problem.

If the evening job didn't impinge on his teaching job in any way, I can't see how that makes him unfit to teach. He might be a fantastic teacher (and stripper ) for all we know!

Unfortunately some busy bodies like to try to make it their business in situations like this

As long as he was a good teacher, it shouldn't matter. Although the text messages are probably a bit iffy in themselves because he shouldn't have been doing that, I'm seeing no red flags here (nothing said about the texts being dodgy).

I wouldn't have a problem with him teaching my children, if that's the bones of the question.

How could he ever be taken seriously again ever surrounded by hundreds of sniggering kids?
I can't imagine my teenage son or his friends managing to go into a class with a straight face if they'd seen the pictures. He would never live it down.

I think he has to decide whether he wants to be a stripper or a teacher. The two aren't particularly compatible and if he wants to stay in teaching he needs to concentrate his energies properly, not ponce around in a thong instead of doing lesson preparation and organising things for his students properly.

I find it incredible that a teacher can promote/condone an industry of sheer titillation (and my understanding of porn is that it often indulges in sublimation of women) and is only slightly sanctioned.

However, if he was a member of the BNP or any other religious and loony fundamentalist party he would be banned from teaching ..

I think the law needs to be clear on any type of discriminatory behaviour by teachers ...

I think it's dreadful that parents don't prevent their children accessing porn.

They should not have found out - and while I disagree with porn it is a legal activity undertaken by a private individual and what I think of it has no bearing on what should happen.

The matter of Facebook and texting is unprofessional and he should face the consequences of that alone.

I'm very much against porn (trafficking/abuse/rape/misogyny) but I can't see that we can prevent teachers from having perfectly legal second jobs.

If any fuckwitted parent tried to gossip with me or acted all aghast at their teenager viewing it I would only focus on how ineffective and stupid they were as a parent as viewing that material under 18 is illegal and I would think they have failed in their duty if care as a parent.

I would be all right with him teaching my child because I assume he wouldn't discuss his personal life with them. The text/fb thing is not on in my opinion, though.

I think the GTC should class it as bringing the profession into disrepute, if it was not stopped when he started teaching. I don't think it is acceptable behaviour. I'm sure that some guidelines already must exist. However, at the end of the day it is not illegal so the school maybe would not be able to do a right lot about it.

Communicating with pupils via text/Facebook is a big no-no too. I am a teacher and all teachers know perfectly well that this is not allowed.

As much as parents may try, they can't necessarily prevent their children viewing porn and anyone who thinks they can is deluded. you can't watch them 24 hours a day, it is perfectly possible that their friends have viewed it and showed it to them on their mobiles. Unless you prevent your teenager from being friends with other teenagers who own mobiles, you have no chance.

Imagine the kids faces when he starts a class discussion on sex and relationships Grin

Probably did that before he went out stripping tbf. You know in the same way that other teachers manage to do loads of other stuff with their time and fulfill their teaching obligations.
No problem with the stripping/porn aspect, the contacting outside of school should be enough to get any teacher a quite serious reprimand and sacked if repeated.
