... is theft? Friend says 'supermarket can afford it'. I think it's stealing. (Catchweighed at checkout... not fixed price pack I should add) AIBU?

Loving this thread, esp 1. guy trimming broccoli stalks (might do that myself with current price hikes...) and 2. child pooing in Asda aisle. Pleeeeaaaase tell me that was comic exaggeration ...

NotFromConcentrate · 30/08/2011 16:30

I saw a woman help herself to a handful of grapes on the way into the supermarket, offer the bag to her husband who did the same, and then replace the grapes and not buy any at all. I was quite Shock at her brazen manner!

JParkson · 30/08/2011 16:32

I made someone on the Sainsburys deli counter trim the fat off some expensive steaks, and then weigh them... she was not happy!

SiamoFottuti · 30/08/2011 16:33

you know nobody gives a bollocks though, including if not particularly shopkeepers/store managers?

CogitoErgoSometimes · 30/08/2011 16:33

Bit of supermarket trivia follows. Want to know why they don't sell loose chillis any more? Children apparently found all that red and green shininess very tempting as a snack..... don't suppose they'd do it twice

Does The Original Grape thread still exist on MN?

5inthebed · 30/08/2011 16:34

Wow, nearly 3 years on MN and I hve never seen a grape thread!

Thepoweroforangeknickers · 30/08/2011 16:37

I think it means the person is a minker - for not washing the grapes before eating them. GADS.

MmeLindor. · 30/08/2011 16:37

JP
They have a sign up in our local supermarket saying that they will not trim fat off as the price is with fat.

SaulGood · 30/08/2011 16:39

Wagon Wheels are horrid. That foam inside them isn't a food stuff. It's the substance that they used to put in sofas before they realised it was flammable. Then Esther got involved and they set fire to a sofa at 7pm on BBC1 on a school night and terrified a nation. Around the same time they were torching shell suits as a warning to us all.

Cheria · 30/08/2011 16:39

Cogito would have loved to see that! All the more reason to sell No reason to stop selling them loose.

Eating any food and opening any packet before buying to me is the equivalent of stealing but I live in France where I don't think it would be accepted at all.

HPonEverything · 30/08/2011 16:41

I depackage, peel and core everything before I get to the checkout.
It means I'm in the supermarket for 7 hours at a time, but by god it's worth it to save that £1.29

JParkson · 30/08/2011 16:42

mme yeah but I threatened her with no yoghurt, and woofed at her :o

acmeexplosives · 30/08/2011 16:42

Oh, I had my first Wagon Wheel for years recently and it was tiny! But maybe that is cos my mouth is much bigger now? Still a mouthful of sugary, mallowy grossness! And I do eat crap sometimes!

acmeexplosives · 30/08/2011 16:44

I would taste cherries though. I think I should become a cherry farmer and retire!

MillyMollyMardy · 30/08/2011 16:45

Ds regarded the trip around the supermarket as snack time. He appeared to have very long ams and could reach anywhere in the trolley. I even cringe now remembering arriving at check out with a bag containing just grape stems. They declined to guess how much it might have weighed.
I remember looking down my judgey nose pre dc at people letting their dc eat in the supermarket.
Can we have a thread about PYO strawberries?

Pinot · 30/08/2011 16:48
ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 30/08/2011 16:49

Cherry's, my DD is the queen of try before you blanch at the price buy. We have recently left Belgium where you weigh and price your own before you get to the checkouts.
DD had eaten 3 euros worth and had just the bag. The till out woman threw it in the bin and told me it didn't count.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 30/08/2011 16:51

I love a good grape thread Smile

Oh the shame, we accidently stole an apple last week Blush. Found it in the trolley when we got to the car, so made a big deal of going back to pay for it. Customer services said, 'oh don't worry...' Smile. So much for trying to instill honesty in one's children....

stripeywoollenhat · 30/08/2011 16:51

dd (2) always insists on eating a banana on her way around the supermarket. i am punctilious about weighing and returning a similar sized banana, although frankly it makes me feel like a weirdo to do so, and i also think tesco [spitting emoticon] deserve at very least to have the odd banana lifted in karmic fashion. but then i think if i preempt dd's teen shoplifting rebellion with casual theft, even if only from tesco, she might do something worse (eg. find god, take up golf) when she reaches double digits, so i traipse back to the banana stand with the paid for banana...

i suppose i could just say no to pre-till banana eating...

joric · 30/08/2011 16:55

A manager at a well known supermarket, whilst doing her round to make sure all the shelves were neat and straight (etc) - saw DD (then maybe 2/3) whimpering whilst I was shopping.. She opened a freezer door, took out a box of mini milks (whispered to me 'can she have one') opened the box and gave her a lolly!!

I really don't think supermarkets stress over a few grapes.
Now CHERRIES are another matter... Pop a couple of them in your mouth and that IS theft.. They cost about a pound each.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/08/2011 16:56

A relative of mine removes the outer leaves off brussel sprouts and counts them out before weighing them. Then you have an allocated number of sprouts for your Christmas meal. Such a joyous meal.

ExitPursuedByATroll · 30/08/2011 17:04

Squeeeeeals of excitement.

A grape thread and a P&C thread running simultaneously.

Tis almost too much to bare.

bumbleymummy · 30/08/2011 17:05

Surely if you weigh them before eating them or buy pre-packaged then it's not a big deal? I would rather wash them first tbh but I have given the boys a banana before (pre-packaged so not sold by weight!) to keep them occupied while we shop!
