Name stealing?

my brother's best friend has just named his newborn the same name as my brother's son- who is four years old. Now I know that it is a compliment, but it's the way in which he conducted himself. He didn't consult with my brother, didn't even tell him his baby had been born a week ago. My brother heard from a friend. When he rang to congratulate him, and asked the baby's name, he commented it was nice that he had named him after his son: but his best friend had the audacity to say he didn't like the name at all, it was his girlfriend's choice, also he wasn't aware that my brother's son had that name, although he had an inkling! He said they consulted baby name books, etc. My brother is understandably upset and feels betrayed. We, as a family, feel my brother's pain. But are we being terribly unreasonable, or are we justified in our emotions?

OP posts:
TandB · 01/09/2011 12:09

I wonder if I can summarise for those who missed it - without getting deleted I mean.

The OP came back and was Not Impressed at the japes and high jinks on the thread. She cast aspersions on the sexual morality of the members of MN and suggested that their monogomy was flexible. She further insinuated that they were Persons of Low Class who reside in dwellings where Burberry and bling are the favoured styles of decor.

After some further exchanges of views she opined that MNetters are akin to a spotty animal with a laugh-like cry, and that they are highly unlikely to be in gainful employment due to their time-commitments relating to each other's husbands.

This was repeated ad nauseam.

nenevomito · 01/09/2011 12:10

Fair do.

Most of mine did suggest that perhaps the OP was not who the OP claimed to be.

Georgimama · 01/09/2011 12:10

Arf at panda's recap.

BaronessBomburst · 01/09/2011 12:11

Why do I miss all the good stuff?!

LadyBeagleEyes · 01/09/2011 12:12

An excellent precis Kungfu.

PippiLongBottom · 01/09/2011 12:16

Ooh my first deleted post.

LadyWellian · 01/09/2011 12:16

They weren't really personal attacks now, were they? Unless it's possible to attack everyone personally at once?

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 01/09/2011 12:18

Don't foget all the 'ask a solicitor!' bits kungfu. When you stepped heroically in to the breech

Smellslikecatpee · 01/09/2011 12:23

I leave for half an hour................

ExitPursuedByATroll · 01/09/2011 12:25

And that we took a lot of drugs. And scrounged off the state. And her.

Andrewofgg · 01/09/2011 12:30

Who told her everyone's secrets? Own up!

LadyBeagleEyes · 01/09/2011 12:32

A very good point LadyWellian.
They weren't personal attacks at all as she insulted everyone equally and therefore not a breach of the rules.
I demand that the deleted posts are reinstated immediately.

TheVermiciousKnid · 01/09/2011 12:35

Fab thread, it's a shame all the juicy bits have been deleted. :(

I'm surprised nobody has changed their name yet to 'YouAreAllSlaaaagsTutTut' or 'ILoveNinnySlags' or something like that.

Personally, I'm considering changing mine to BaronessBendOver.

LadyWellian · 01/09/2011 12:41

Show me a hair and I'll split it Grin

GwendolineMaryLacey · 01/09/2011 12:42

Ah ffs, please someone tell me what the op said when she came back

Kayano · 01/09/2011 12:44

Read kungfupandas post above yours

TheOriginalFAB · 01/09/2011 12:45

Mine was personal!!!!

Luckily I don't care. If you are going to "slag" off someone have the balls to do it under your usual name.

TheVermiciousKnid · 01/09/2011 12:51

The OP came back to justify why the whole family feels pain and betrayal about the stealing of 'her' (Hmm) boy's name. Brother's friend admitted that they had named their son after brother's son - apparently he really did know what brother's son was called. Brother's friend's girlfriend gave birth in Italy, which was somehow relevant. Confused

Then the delightful OP launced into a charming monologue about Mumsnetters' shortcomings, as paraphrased by Kungfupanda above.

hester · 01/09/2011 12:54

I WILL NOT go onto Google after reading this thread. I will not, I will not, I will not....

Anyway, what I particularly love about this thread is that we're like a gang of girls who are usually accused of being prissy and stuck-up, and someone's just come along and accused us of being bikeshed girls, and we're so so thrilled that someone thinks we're more Bad than Boden Grin

RustyBear · 01/09/2011 13:00

I think kungfu stepped heroically into the breach - stepping into the breech would be something quite different...

Could someone confirm - if the poor childs name does that mean he is now nameless? Think I feel a namechange coming on (NamelessSchmoo has a classy ring methinks, for a slllaaaaaag).

PinkSchmoo · 01/09/2011 13:18

Clearly I'm a dumbass sllaaaaagggggg as I missed a "was stolen".

I've just seen Shirley's earlier precis - she has some bits I missed!

There was also tutting. Which was apparenty because we are prissy and would like it.

I am inclined to agree with LadyWellian about the illegality of the post removal. Seeing as I have already clocked up several chargeable minutes hours on this thread I am more than happy to draft a letter before claim to MNHQ indicating that we are preparing to sue them for the reinstatement of the general insult posts.
