The only rain of note was 2 weekends ago in the Gower, camping, where there was a terrific storm, so windy that our awning blew down Shock

traceybeaker · 29/08/2011 08:55

I am in Devon and since May we have had loads of sunny days, far more than last year.

We have had some rubbish wet days but on the whole a goodish summer.

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 29/08/2011 08:58

We moved back to England about 5 weeks ago. The first week was lovely and sunny. Since then it's been a mixture of rain and wind and a bit of sun.
Normal English weather as far as I remember. I am crossing my fingers for an Indian summer though [hopeful]

Ragwort · 29/08/2011 09:00

Pamp - well, I don't live that far from you but I don't think the weather ha been that great Grin. Still, the sun is shining today Smile

MumblingRagDoll · 29/08/2011 09:03

I agree with Gwendoline....this is the UK, it's what we get. i love Autumn and dark cold nights...can't bear hot sticky weather! Autumn is beautiful. I also love snow.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/08/2011 09:07

YABU

I feel the cold a lot and for the first time ever we have had our heating off since April (south-east). This is a huge deal for us as it means I have had 5 months with no lighting of the really dust-producing stove (it heats our central heating via radiators).

I also think we've had a lot of sunshine (and a lot of rain) and I'm still tanned from Cornwall at the beginning of August.

TartyMcFarty · 29/08/2011 09:11

As a teacher, I can predict with some certainty that summer will be back with a vengeance on 5th September.

diddl · 29/08/2011 09:13

I don´t think it´s been that good (N. Germany here), but-haven´t had any muggy nights & unable to sleep-that´s got to be a blessing??

Still spent most of it wearing capri pants/shorts & tee shirts & swimming at the Lido most days, so no that bad.

No blazing hot days-but that´s fine by me!

Pamplemoussse · 29/08/2011 09:13

arf Rag, I think the fact that it hasn't rained much has translated in my mind into BOILING HOT SUMMER iyswim

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/08/2011 09:25

Some hard evidence for people Grin

These maps are ace - you can see exactly where it has been wetter/drier/hotter/colder than normal. Sadly they only go up to July but not long before the august maps come online.

What stands out for me for July is how very much wetter parts of the NE and Eastern Scotland have been with greater than double their usual rainfall. I think that theme has continued through August? Poor soggy souls up there.

Meanwhile the central midlands was a little drier than usual. Much of England and wales was a degree or two below normal. Western Scotland was sunnier than usual while parts of England were gloomier than usual.

Bump this thread in few days for a quick scan of Augusts results. :)

ithaka · 29/08/2011 09:44

Great maps. I am in eastern Scotland and concur that it has been a very wet July (and wet and chilly August, boo!) Many crops not harvested yet, which is late for this area.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/08/2011 09:54

Not too bad here (south coast), April and May were scorchio, June and July not bad and August a bit on the cool side (apparently it was pretty wet here last week but we went to Scotland were it was fairly dry). We managed a few beach days the first two weeks of the school hols. I have quite enjoyed not having to spend so much time plastering the DCs in sun cream. I'm not one for really hot weather mind you, the Easter holidays were too hot for me.

pamplemousserose · 29/08/2011 09:55

There are nearly always some hot days in September.< remembers swimming in the sea in North Wales on a hot day at the beginning of April>

StopRainingPlease · 29/08/2011 09:58

Poor soggy souls indeed! We did have a nice hot sunny day this summer - it was a Friday, in early June. Haven't had another since!

StopRainingPlease · 29/08/2011 09:58

Oh and it has rained practically every day, often torrentially (hence my username!).

Eglu · 29/08/2011 10:00

YANBU. I am in Scotland and wanted to wear a hat and gloves for the school run this morning, but felt that in August that would be ridiculous.

StopRainingPlease · 29/08/2011 10:00

Thanks for that map BadBadKitten - 200% of average rainfall in July. Angry

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/08/2011 10:03

Those maps are fascinating.

Meglet · 29/08/2011 10:03

YANBU.

I got to sunbathe in April / May (Spring was great!) and a couple of times in July. That was it Angry.

My garden is messy as it's too wet to cut it then we get a short burst of sun and it grows overnight.

Oakmaiden · 29/08/2011 10:45

The only thing with those maps is that they aren't telling you what the weather was like, just if it differed from the "average" for that area. So if it is often cool and wet in a particular place during July, and this year has also been cool and wet, then it shows as "average". Which doesn't mean the weather has been nice, just that it is no worse than normal....

2003 - I think that is the year we are all looking back on and wondering why the weather can't be like that again.... with a warm July AND August....

carriedababi · 29/08/2011 10:57

badkitten, question for you, when should i book my holiday to cornwall next year for the best chance of sun?
Wink

go on give me your best guess please

At 27 weeks pregnant I'm thankful for the crap weather

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/08/2011 11:15

hang on carrie - I think I know where to get that info :)

queenmaeve · 29/08/2011 11:19

Awful weather in Ireland too. We seemed to have had our summer during Easter week. We had the odd hot day but there wasn't one single night over the summer that was warm enough to sit out after dark. It was bloody cold. Usually when dc have gone to bed on a balmy summer night we sit outside for a few glasses of wine, never happened this year.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/08/2011 11:19

sw climate info believe it or not - July is the answer Grin
