Disabled parking badges are for the designated places NOT where the hell you like

Really need a vent! Am sick to death of seeing cars parked in the parent and baby/toddler spaces just because they have a blue badge, and not a child in sight Angry The other way around and you wouldn't hear the end of it about inconsiderate parents etc. I fully agree with the need for the disabled spaces etc, but I don't like having to choose between leaving my baby locked in the car to return the trolley (especially if out of sight) and him getting totally soaked etc if I take him with me.
Disclaimer This is made more annoying for the particular store I am referring to as there are only 2 parent spaces, and more than a dozen disabled badge holder ones. Yet because the parent ones are in between the two sets, they use those and leave all the other badge spaces empty.

I'm sure some people do use their bb fraudulently becaroo, but I suspect that for every one of them there are lots of people who could use one all the time if they so wished but don't, unless they really are in need that day.

Lifehope Asda are trying to enforce the disabled bays being used by the disabled.

Our sainsbury's enforces the disabled spaces for blue badge holders. There is someone who patrols the area but I've never seen him issue a ticket (and yes I do notice because I am one of those people who reports cars incorrectly parked) I'm sure he must do though, otherwise his presence is pretty pointless.

itisnearlysummer · 01/09/2011 21:03

Becaroo This does undoubtedly happen. My grandma used to offer me the use of hers when I went into town because it would have made it easier to park with the children!

I would like to state categorically, that I never once took her up on it and couldn't make her see why it was wrong. "But if I was in town I'd be using the space..." Yes, grandma, but you're not going into town, I am.

I think people do it because they think it's helping someone out without realising the effect on another person.

Andrewofgg · 02/09/2011 06:50

Thumbwitch I would rather chop off my own ears or any other dangly appendage than park in the BB spaces without the right to do so. And I fervently hope that I never have the right to do so.

I meant that I don't think private companies should have the right to issue "tickets" for anything - they are not law enforcement agencies.

And I don't think they should have access to DVLA data for any purpose.

I also meant that suing in the county court for small sums is not worth it and they would not do it.

Sorry if I did not make myself clear.

TheHumanCatapult · 02/09/2011 06:59

ok I am going to confess that i have parked in a blue bade space at supermarket without having a blue badge as was waiting for it to come through .

But do need to point out before i got ripped to pieces .I went into store to customer services and explained that are in a disabled space and they could see pretty obvious that i am in a wheelchair so they just made a note of the reg .

Am all legal now and have my blue badge

Becaroooo · 02/09/2011 10:59

human Thats a bit daft, isnt it? I thought there would at least be a sort of temporary badge you could display til you got the proper one???? Surely if you are entitled you should be able to park in disabled spaces from the day you receive your decision???? Hmm

itsnearlysummer Yes, it happens at lot round here. Last year I was really struggling with my back (long standing issue - I have RA) and I have 2 young dc. No P&C spaces (there never are!) so I had to park a fairly long distance away from the shops entrance....it was so windy ds2's pushchair flew away!!!! Grin Anyway, was struggling to get ds2 out of car, into said flywaway buggy and get my bags etc and 2 very young women screeched into a dsiabled bay near me - in a car with a bb on display - and proceeded to laugh at my struggles in my far too small space and brag about the ease of parking!!!

What can you do?

I also knew a mobile hairdresser whose father was a paraplegic....she used his motability vehicle for her business and kept the BB in display at all times. Her father never went out. Never. I wish I had reported her tbh but I was young and stupid.

As ever, there are always those that abuse the system Angry

Oh, and I would NEVER park in a diabled space. NEVER. Its just not something a decent person would do.

Thumbwitch · 02/09/2011 11:17

Andrewofgg - yes, that's clearer. I agree with your points re. personal information security and that - but why couldn't normal traffic wardens patrol supermarket carparks as well as the streets?

Andrewofgg · 02/09/2011 11:24

Because it is not their job. And where would you stop? Restaurant car parks? The car park at my local bank which gets abused by commuters? There is a line between the streets and private property, and that must be the line beyond which the wardens have no jurisdiction.

Thumbwitch · 02/09/2011 11:25

Don't know about that. I think that if there are disabled spaces, then they should come under law enforcement, regardless of where they are. But we can agree to disagree on that point - chances of it happening are mighty slim.

Andrewofgg · 02/09/2011 11:27

As one non-abuser of BB and indeed P & C spaces to another, Thumbwitch, I agree, and now coffee is finished and back to work!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 02/09/2011 14:23

Wonder where all these hordes of blue badge space abusers have come from..I always notice people when they park in disabled space and they always have clear mobility difficulties and a blue badge.

I'm sure we'll get judged when my DD's badge arrives and we get out of car, as her issues aren't as obvious

Pendeen · 02/09/2011 14:31

As maters stand, provision of the spaces on private land is a Building Regulations requirement, enforcement of parking regulations only aplies to Highways.

Enforcement of parking on private land is contractural or tort i.e. a civil matter.

Apologies if this has already been explained in one of the previous 28 pages! :)

TheHumanCatapult · 02/09/2011 16:15

Becarro

I had to wait 11 weeks for my badge to come through once was home and applied .But yeah i was in need of one the day i went into surgery or came out of hospital( am paraplegic) was a right pita waiting

Becaroooo · 02/09/2011 17:05

Thats Shock human

How can they justify making people wait so long???? Angry

fanjo that certainly can be an issue. My friend has COPD...she cant walk very far and needs a wheelchair for any distance. However, she looks healthy IYSWIM??? No limp, plaster cast, or obvious disability til she gets her wheelchair out of the car. She has been abused so often in car parks by other disabled people Sad

I hope it doesnt happen to you or your dd.
