To buy a second hand fur coat?

I have never worn fur, always faux fur but have found a coat I love on ebay and just realised it is real fur... I don't know if I could bring myself to wear it TBH, but if I could would it be unreasonable??

Would you harass an eater of cow or a wearer of chinchilla?

Carrotsandcelery · 27/08/2011 19:26

I wouldn't Andrew. My dh is an eater of cow and I love him dearly. I do tease my friend with the vile fur coat relentlessly about how repulsive it is though Grin

I wouldn't say a word to a stranger in the street in a fur coat though. I would, however, think a lot less of them.

Carrotsandcelery · 27/08/2011 19:30

ruby I think it is something to do with the frivolity of it - it is just so unnecessary!

The days of fur fake or real are over. In my young days the world and his wife wore rabbit coats, but now the same people wouldn't be seen dead in them. The fine for fur fake, new or second hand is gone IMO.

"I agree that wouldn't really work...but a long beautifully cut velvet coat could look fantastic."

Oh it would. However I can't stand the feel of velvet, it's like fingernails on a blackboard to me. :(

Carrotsandcelery · 27/08/2011 19:55

Oh no! I have friends like that. I am like that with feathers. Eeek!

It's no different really than wearing leather or suede, which most people do quite happily.

And frankly most people can't tell real from fake any more - not unless they are extremely up close to it.

In fact, one very wintery New Year, stuck at my parents without proper clothing I unearthed my grandmother's fur coat which was the only warm coat left - I went out in it, toasty warm until I got confronted by my militant veggie friend Mary "That's not bloody real is it?"
"Why, do you think it looks real?"
"Pah - nah I guess no one would actually wear a REAL fur coat!"
And she never said anything about it again.

The days of people throwing paint over you are long gone... But TBH it is rarely cold enough to justify a fur coat in the UK, you'll end up very sticky and hot.

Walking along Brighton seafront in the Winter always made me glad for my fur coat, really kept the wind out.

It feels frivolous in this country because it's rarely cold enough.
It is no more frivolous in the grand scheme than eating meat.
Food is survival, but so is clothing, warmth and protection from the elements.
We are very lucky to live in this temperate climate where the weather allows us the option to eschew animal fibres.

We don't need to eat meat in this country, we're not Inuit, we're not Masai, a plentiful and varied plant-based diet is available.
It's no more frivolous. It's just easier to be squeamish about.
