To buy a second hand fur coat?

DarlingDuck · 26/08/2011 21:56

I have never worn fur, always faux fur but have found a coat I love on ebay and just realised it is real fur... I don't know if I could bring myself to wear it TBH, but if I could would it be unreasonable??

ghost, that was brilliant.

glitterkitten · 26/08/2011 22:53

When my dear nan died I rescued two beautiful fur coats from her " miscellaneous" pile. Too beautiful to go to waste. I love them. So will my daughter. Those animals did not die in vain.

GroovyRach · 26/08/2011 22:55

Please don't buy a fur jacket. Get on YouTube and look at how these poor animals are kept in awful conditions simply to be killed for their fur. It's heartbreaking Sad

ThePosieParker · 26/08/2011 22:57

The more people that wear them old or new the more acceptable they become.

Valravn · 26/08/2011 23:00

"Aren't all fur coats second hand?"

Excellent post, Keith.

glitterkitten · 26/08/2011 23:01

Animals die in pain for the meat trade on a much larger scale than the uk fur trade. I take it the objectors are vegan? Or perhaps the fluffier the animal, the more important the rights??

ghostofstalbans · 26/08/2011 23:04

so that makes it ok glitter? don't be naive.

i have seen lots of posts on here in the last few years justifying the wearing of fur.

we are going backwards with regard to animal welfare in all industries

squeakytoy · 26/08/2011 23:06

Glitterkitten. We do not eat fox, mink, or many of the other animals that were/are killed purely for their skin. We do not need fur coats. There are many synthetic materials that provide as much, indeed more weatherproofing than fur.

Animals in the meat trade are killed in a much more humane way than many of the animals that are skinned for their fur.

I am not a vegetarian, but I would never wear real fur, vintage or new.

Valravn · 26/08/2011 23:07

"I take it the objectors are vegan?"

Yes, glitterkitten, this objector is vegan.

ThePosieParker · 26/08/2011 23:08

I also think meat/fur that you can choose what level of humanity your animal has lived/died. We don't eat much meat in this house but when we do it's organic/out door reared and always British, expensive hence not very often!!

glitterkitten · 26/08/2011 23:08

Resect where respect Is due val

MightyQuim · 26/08/2011 23:08

I wouldn't OP - they have a very odd smell ime.

I can't say I've come across anyone ethically against artificial fur before this thread Agent. Surely if it stops people buying the real thing that's good?

ThePosieParker · 26/08/2011 23:08

Sorry, tired. Meat you CAN choose. Fur is just all vile.

goodasgold · 26/08/2011 23:09

I haven't looked into this, I have family members with real fur, I thought it was the same as eating meat or wearing leather. I am not a vegetarian. I love my cat and lots of animals, but I wear leather.

Carrotsandcelery · 26/08/2011 23:10

ghost love the link and keith exactly.

Op if you wear a fake or faux fur, old or new, you are encouraging and condoning and industry that is cruel and vile.

I also believe that eating meat is cruel and unnecessary if that answers your further question.

Empusa · 26/08/2011 23:11

"Op if you wear a fake or faux fur, old or new, you are encouraging and condoning and industry that is cruel and vile."

With fake fur? Hmm

Valravn · 26/08/2011 23:16

Yes, Empusa.

It sets a trend, makes the wearing of fur more prevelant and "in the high street" and acts as an encouragement to many to wear the real thing. You've only got to look at how the fashion industry - or even, on a smaller scale, just a group of girls in one school start the ball rolling with a fad to see how quickly others follow.

Carrotsandcelery · 26/08/2011 23:17

Yes with fake fur because it normalises it and blurs the boundaries. Obviously no direct cruelty has taken place, unless you consider how they develop the fake furs.

Empusa · 26/08/2011 23:17

Or it sets a trend for fake fur. Which is what I remember when I was younger, no one was saying "oh I like your fake fur, I must get me some real fur"

Carrotsandcelery · 26/08/2011 23:19

There is always an element who want to go one step further though.

Empusa · 26/08/2011 23:20

They're going to do it though, even if none of us wear fake fur.

Carrotsandcelery · 26/08/2011 23:21

Sadly that is probably true, but we don't need to appear to condone it or normalise the look.

Carrotsandcelery · 26/08/2011 23:23

Infact, if it is available to all but we shun the look it cheapens it for those who would wear real fur. We can refuse to follow a trend and it becomes less trendy.

Empusa · 26/08/2011 23:26

Personally I'm not going to stop wearing fake fur just because some idiot might think it's an incentive for them to wear real fur

AgentZigzag · 26/08/2011 23:34

'Resect where respect Is due val'

I'm not a vegetarian or vegan but don't like fur to be worn as 'fashion' glitterkitten, not sure how I as a sarky twat can live without your respect.
