i use a laundry maker.i dont own an iron and cant be bothered with sew on ones.by the time ive done it all, they'll all have grown out of uniform!

SpawnChorus · 27/08/2011 16:09

Sew on. I think the iron on ones can be a bit scratchy if they start to peel at the edges. Also if you just sew the two ends, the label forms a handy loop for hanging the garment up.

SpawnChorus · 27/08/2011 16:13

I don't understand the thinking behind writing the name somewhere discreet. If someone nicks the clothes, and is willing to go to the effort of cutting out a label, then you've had it really. You can't go around demanding to look inside random kids jumpers for the "hidden" name.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 27/08/2011 16:22

It does work Spawn.

If you write it on a label they cut it out. If you write it in the arm it is always there. They know you can get it back.

You dont have to say 'you've nicked my jumper'. You only have to say 'I think there has been a mix up can we check? I always write the kids' names in the sleeve'

You get your jumper back, toerag can pretend it was all a big mistake, they dont nick your kids' jumpers again.

Genius Spawn :)

I use sew in labels. I did have iron on ones for when DD went on a school trip and everything had to be named, but I think they look tatty after a while.

elinorbellowed · 27/08/2011 17:06

I have bought sew on ones for the clothes and stick on ones for bags and shoes. I quite like sewing and the way they look, but it's still going to be a long weekend next weekend!
I'm the eldest of four. Mum bought personalised sew on ones for me and second sister. Youngest two had the old labels cut in half and initial in fabric pen. But not until secondary school, because we didn't have uniform at primary. When did ALL primary schools get uniform? DS has to wear a tie. A TIE! At 4 and a half. I think it's ridiculous. (and no I didn't know about the tie when I applied to the school and no there isn't another school nearby)

kellestar · 27/08/2011 17:29

There is a way to make sure that your uniform is never nicked, hand knit it! Wink my mum did this for me, how ever much I longed for it, no-one ever pinched my uniform Blush she never had to bother with name tapes.

Glutton for punishment me, I sew in DNeice's labels, surname tag, but also sew in ribbon in yellow so they know it's her's, DNephew wanted pink ribbon, but changed it to red. If I set up my sewing machine I can get them done in an hour. Used to sew unit name tapes in the Brownies/Guides kit so learnt a speedy sewing machine technique.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 27/08/2011 17:55

But MrsDeVere if you don't know which parents have "mixed-up" your jumper you have to have that conversation 30 times!

Also, my surly uncommunicative husband does picking up and dropping off. There is no way he'd go up to anyone in the playground and ask to look in jumpers. I can't even get him to RSVP party invites.

Mitmoo · 27/08/2011 18:00

All good parents know that you send your kids to school in the tattiest clothes, hanging off them in tatters, it's saves you a fortune on name stickers as no one would nick them.

I foght eviryone knowed vat.

HattiFattner · 27/08/2011 18:02

My ds goes to a school in a v posh area. I was advised to sew on labels because of the number of jumpers that get nicked. I actually met a mum in my frst term, while searching through lost property for a lost cardi, that I should take a decent one and just cut out the existing label!

Now I sew their names in - usually with a big ZigZag stitch on the machine. If its too much hassle to take it off, thieving parents will generally choose something else!.

nickschick · 27/08/2011 18:03

The absolute only way to ensure you get your jumper back is to sew a small running stitch on the collar at the back in a different colour to the sweater - stands out a mile in assembly if you know what your looking for Grin.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 27/08/2011 18:35

Well nothing is foolproof endo Grin

In the 15 years I have had kids in primary school I have found it is usually the same suspects who 'forget' to send a jumper back. Kids also take them off a lot which is how they get 'lost' in the first place.

You have a squint down the peg rack at home time or on the floor and you will usually find what you are looking for.

I was once walking to school on a monday and saw a jumper in a tree. I thought I'd better get it down because some 'poor mum' would be missing it.

Got it down - DS1's name in it.

Hmm
EndoplasmicReticulum · 27/08/2011 18:56

On the rare occasions I go to pick up from school I usually can get the jumpers, yes.

Trouble with my husband, and he is a lovely man, is that I'm lucky if he gets home with the correct children.

I discovered this evening that the embroidered patch on the school sweatshirts is white on the back. Now have named that with Sharpie as well as sewing in label, just in case......

pizzadelivery · 27/08/2011 19:03

Permanent marker on labels.

Once they get to secondary though you can stop bothering. Teenagers do not look in lost property, might say thay do but they LIE no other way to explain our HUGE lost property area with brand new uniform, full pencil cases, shoes (how?!), trainers, whole PE kits, handbags all easily identifiable names, design, work inside etc. Suggest it and they will 'do it later, or can't be bothered. Hmm

Strange there are no ipods or phones though....

thefirstMrsDeVere · 27/08/2011 19:12

Yes my OH will ring me at 12 to ask me what 3 year old should be wearing. He is never bought all the right kids home with all the right equipment. I feel your pain Grin

festi · 28/08/2011 00:01

just wanted to randomly say...spit roast platter...dont know why

festi · 28/08/2011 00:02

wrong thrad OMG sorry

TheLadyEvenstar · 28/08/2011 00:20

YAABU as you have just reminded me I have got to do this with DS2's uniform and I was trying to ignore the fact my baby is going to be away from me for 3 hours a day in a few weeks. [SULK]

AuntiePickleBottom · 28/08/2011 10:15

fabric pen here, those iron on labels are rubbish...and i can't sew

ChristinedePizan · 28/08/2011 10:21

I have done sewn on because the iron on ones come off and I will (hopefully) be able to sell the uniform on when DS has grown out of it. Always always label shoes too.

Sometimes there are benefits to having had your DC in formal childcare for years before starting school :o

ChristinedePizan · 28/08/2011 10:22

*unexpected benefits
