Iron on or stitch in school name labels - advice from MN Jury please :)

OP posts:
ThePosieParker · 26/08/2011 23:22

Always stitched.

4madboys · 26/08/2011 23:25

sharpie markers here, just write the surname as i have four boys, and i write on the label, inside the cuff of the sleeve and the bottom hem of the jumper and STILL some have gone missing!

bibbitybobbityhat · 26/08/2011 23:26

exorbitclamp · 26/08/2011 23:27

I stitch, I cannot seem to iron on the iron on ones without them wrinkling. I manage to add creases with the iron.

ladygagoo · 26/08/2011 23:31

I stitch, not only because I weirdly like sewing, but also because I get a lovely warm mummy feeling for doing it for my fab dss.

horsemadgal · 26/08/2011 23:40

Biro here! Lasts a while, then just redo.

There was loads of lost property at end of year at DS's school. They sat it all out for parents to check for their kids stuff but not many bothered, so don't think much is being stolen. They could have had any amount of uniform that week!

Lotkinsgonecurly · 26/08/2011 23:56

Sew on ones look prettier.

Helenagrace · 26/08/2011 23:58

I labelled dd's brand new blazer in three different places. Hasn't stopped someone nicking it though.

Just got to brave the school uniform shop next week ... and brave the till when they ring up £105 for a new one.

nickschick · 27/08/2011 00:09

Helena - under the collar at the back, on the under flap of the pocket and at the bottom of the back where the lining hangs down slightly sew a few cms of a different colour thread.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 27/08/2011 00:12

Iron? Stitch?

Fabric pen on the label. Much easier.

peeriebear · 27/08/2011 00:15

At the start of the new school year I sew name tags in everything. By the time I have to buy anything else mid-year we're back to biro on the label. It all gets lost anyway.

Whatmeworry · 27/08/2011 00:18

Though I've got bored with that and now just scrawl the name on the existing labels with a sharpie

That.

Lasts longer too.

GreatNorksOfFire · 27/08/2011 00:31

The school insists on sewn on name labels - on everything. I have only just ordered them, so doubtless they will arrive the day before DC1 starts school and I will be up until the wee hours trying to sew labels into umpteen tiny items of clothing.

festi · 27/08/2011 00:40

clothes marker pen here aswell.

in dds school at the end of each term unlabeled lost property is layed out on table for anyone to help themselfs to anything they want and labeled and marked stuff on another table for people to retrive.

fedupofnamechanging · 27/08/2011 07:58

It's definitely a good idea to go through lost property (although, oddly enough, my sons brand new jumpers weren't there!). Our school lets us choose replacement items from lost property at the end of the year if the clothes aren't labelled or claimed or if it's been donated by families who have left the school. It is galling to buy brand new uniform and end up using someone else's battered about stuff when you are less than a term in, but it is slightly less galling than having to buy more brand new stuff.

Have just spent the best part of £400 on uniform this month (2 dc at high school and new uniform introduced by school, so can't get any of it cheaper, plus 2 dc at primary), so my dc have been warned they will be in big, stinky trouble if they use their new blazers as goal posts Grin

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 27/08/2011 08:09

DD is starting in 10 days {hallaluja] at a new school. She has the whole set of uniform and yesterday I bought Tesco's own brand permanent marker pens.
I forsee a weekend of writing for one of us and it isn't this one Wink.
In the past DD has lost umpteen articles of clothing despite them being named.
The most galling thing was her stuff came from H+M or C&A, a lot of the stuff in lost property was Dior, Lanvin, Ralph Lauren etc and had just been left there and not collected.
There were sevreal pairs of shoes. How can you lose a pair of shoes and not know?

joric · 27/08/2011 08:11

Biro for me!

Melly20MummyToPoppy · 27/08/2011 08:20

My sisters little boy is starting school next week, and when she got the uniform a teacher advised her not to put a label in, write somewhere discreet, as people do steal them and remove the label! Believe it or not!

FabbyChic · 27/08/2011 08:28

I always used stitch on's they look better and not cheap.

VoldemortsNipple · 27/08/2011 08:55

I hand embroider DS's name on the inside of his jumper, otherwise we would be lucky to have it a month. Don't get me wrong, its not particulary neat but it is effective. DS's jumpers are knitted and navy in colour, so a nice bright green thread shows up lovely. As somebody has ready mentioned, its not the kids who do the robbing, they go home accidently in the wrong top and parents think that jumpers nicer, they cut labor out or cheekly just write over your lable.

This year DS needs a new pe tshirt. The uniform shop do an embroidery service for 2.95 so I've paid the extra. His name will be clearly labled for all to see so nobody will be able to sabatage it.

A good place to write names in coats is in the pockets. It's easy to check on the playground and not too intrusive.

PassTheTwiglets · 27/08/2011 09:04

My iron-ons don't come off! It's very important to do them properly - iron for 15 seconds and let the fabric cool down completely before ironing again and then repeat (so 3 lots of ironings and coolings). I machine wash and tumble-dry all the school clothes and maybe one or two labels will come off over the course of the clothing's life. The rest stay put. I'd much rather iron on 2 labels over the course of a year than sew one on!

CrosswordAddict · 27/08/2011 09:04

OP I use my own kind of compromise.
Now I buy cheapo iron-on labels, write the name using the indelible pen and SEW them in so that they stay there for ever. Iron-on are a waste of time imho because you spend too much time re-applying them.

gorionine · 27/08/2011 09:12

I got this £12 on sale last year and it is fantastic to print your own labels to iron on. you have to buy the ribbon (about £4) but for us with 4 DCS it really comes much cheaper than an ordered seet each, even a basic one.

gorionine · 27/08/2011 09:14

Oh ironed on properly as PassTheTwiglet said, they do not come off either!Smile

MINIMAX · 27/08/2011 12:46

I love the iron on letter transfers from easy2name - they're great on socks, and everything. They don't itch or come off as they're just the letter - not a plastic-type strip.

Top tip here - they cost £11.95 for 100 and you can use up to 28 characters. If you have two kids, order both their names as follows on one order:-

Joe Smith Fred Smith

then, cut them in half to use - that way you get double the labels, without ordering some for both child!
