DD's friend has had her hair highlighted. Not just grab some "sun-in" from the chemist and do it at home but £100 plus @ salon. I'm Shock for two reasons... a) that 13 is too young to interfere chemically with natural beauty and b) ok, if you must, that kind of money?!!!

Yabu
My dd is 13 and I let her have very subtle highlights recently, it looks completely natural, just like she's been in the sun a lot. My best friend is a hairdresser and she did it for a tenner :) no way would I pay £100 for me never mind dd!

I had my hair all sorts of colours when I was a teen, it's all harmless fun IMO. She isn't interested in boys particularly, so she isn't doing it for anyone but herself. She doesn't tend to wear make up and we're certainly not a waxing legs at 8 sort of family!

I agree regarding the money, I'm sure there's a place she could have had it done cheaper, although I know that hair salons are absurdly expensive these days, but I don't think she's too young. And it's definitely better she doesn't do it at home which almost always goes wrong!

I think 13s fine, but I'd try to find some where cheaper! I don't pay that for mine. DDs hair is getting darker as she gets older and I wouldn't be surprised if she wants to lighten it a bit. My sister has for many many years, originally because she had pale skin and light eye lashes and brows and now because it hides the greyWink

I had my first highlights around that time. I was always interested in beauty & hair which has been my career for the last 20+ years. If I had a daughter I may consider letting her have highlights but only v fine natural ones at that age that won't have a regrowth problem. Would rather she had them done nicely but would get her to save,my salon bills are high enough!
Every child grows up at a different rate,I know my nieces would not be allowed them at that age so yanbu to not agree but yabu if you judge this girl.

Semi permanent would be ok, they will fade away, and the chemicals are not as damaging.

bellaisinHawaii · 27/08/2011 04:22

I don't see a problem with it. I had mine done in a salon at that age - am now 46 and it has not done my hair any damage and I have had if done ever since.

wellwisher · 27/08/2011 10:34

It's only hair. I wouldn't spend that kind of money on it though - home kit or nothing! I am v good at hairdressing type stuff though so I reckon I could get good results with a home kit.

DD2 has her hair highlighted. DD1 has gorgeous wavy chocolate brown hair, I have blonde hair, DD2 has dead mouse. She hates dead mouse hair so I pay for her to have highlights. It makes her happy and I don't mind her having it done.

Girls are bitches at that age, If she wants to be like the others in her class and have her hair done, then I'm happy to pay for it.
