To think that what my Mum said when I fell in the street is a little bit uncalled for?

I tripped and fell taking the skin off my knee and it has swelled. However just after I fell she said "Oh well you are fat anyway so its a very heavy weight to fall over"

I'm not the OP, carpwidow - I was trying to explain to MrsGPotter why a fat person can be hurt by a comment about their weight (like the one in the OP) - but I appreciate your kindness. Smile

ddubsgirl · 22/08/2011 22:31

would any of you say that to a child tho?does it matter if this child is an adult, comments like still bloody hurt, esp from someone who is supose love & care about you!

hope the knee feels better op,remember to rest it and use an ice pack xxx

carpwidow · 22/08/2011 22:32

... I'd be a crap counsellor then!! I'd get all my clients muddled up. I fall over all the time and my mum says "get up, you're pissed!"

SDGT - as one Weegie to another

Please, please give Fabby a smack from me too

MrsGPotter · 22/08/2011 22:55

SDGT, sorry to hear you feel that way. I'm not trying to be a twat, I just find it difficult to understand.

I'm not skinny, I carry a few extra pounds but I'm fine with that and if someone points it out to me I simply agree with them. What would be the point in denying it or getting upset over it? it doesn't change the reality of the situation.

BTW, I'm not overweight because I have a medical condition or because I have a psychological problem or because of issues from my childhood - I simply like food and eat too much of it and no I haven't tried every diet going because life is too short and I don't care enough about my weight to deprive myself of nice food.

LineRunner · 22/08/2011 23:02

I fail to understand why, when a person trips over, they should - as the first words they hear - accept graciously an unnecessary and irrelevant comment about their size.

ddubsgirl · 22/08/2011 23:08

i argee line, the pavement tripped u up cos your fat!er ok! only fat people fall over,my eldest is dyspraixc and falls over his own shadow and falls up the stairs.

JockTamsonsBairns · 22/08/2011 23:20

Shock there's a Glasgow meet up??
Fabby - don't go. They'll chew you up and spit you out.

To the OP, what Linerunner said really. Why, when you've fallen over and hurt yourself, would it then be in any way dandy to hear a derogatory comment about your weight from your mum? Can't see anything funny or clever about the comment, just hurtful. YANBU

Ivortheengine8 · 23/08/2011 07:39

Yep, Fabby, watch those scots, especially when angry....Angry

OP, I think most people on here empathise with you and feel it was uncalled for. I hope you are feeling a bit better today? There is nothing funny in it, it's just tactless and I would feel the same if my mum said anything like that to me.

MightyQuim · 23/08/2011 10:34

Tell your mother that she obviously doesn't understand physics as heavier things don't fall faster. If anything a skinny person would be more streamlined and fall faster.
In all seriousness though it's an awful thing to say. Does your mum often put her foot in it like that?
