A year ago I bought a set of very nice wine glasses a bit like these from Laura Ashley...I got them on sale and tbh because I don't even DRINK wine, I thought it was nice of me as DH had no decent glasses to have wine and he likes it.

DH thinks I'm an oik because "You just don't drink wine from a red glass" apparently Hmm

He says that to see the colour of the wine is part of the "experience" of drinking it.

He's a fecking wine snob...he'l sit there discussing the stuff with his parents and it annoys me.

So. Am I an unclutured oik? Eh? Am I? AIBU to buy red wine glasses?

I agree with your DH. ....struts around because I have discovered I am a wine buff....

BelleDameSansMerci · 19/08/2011 20:49

But Mumbling you like those rustic mugs too... Grin

Indaba · 19/08/2011 20:50

sorry, but agree with your DH.

I can't abide eating from coloured plates either.

Ephiny · 19/08/2011 20:51

I wouldn't see the problem personally Confused. Surely someone must drink wine from red glasses, or why would red wine glasses exist? Or are they not supposed to be for wine?

I have tea in various coloured mugs as well, including some dark blue and brown ones, it never occurred to me that there was anything wrong with that either...

Ephiny · 19/08/2011 20:52

Oh and we have coloured plates too Blush.

Clearly I am not at all cultured...

Bunbaker · 19/08/2011 20:57

"I'm not at all cultured, or a wine snob BUT I do love a glass of good red wine and being able to see it in the glass is an indication of how good it is before I neck it.

Sorry, your DH is right."

Yes. I agree. OH wouldn't make such disparaging remarks, but he simply wouldn't use them for wine. If I was given wine in such a glass I would suspect that it is probably cheap and nasty and needs disguising.

Mbear · 19/08/2011 20:57

Another one that agrees with your dh. Sorry.

I hate glass dining tables if it helps. I think it's wrong to see feet when you are having your dinner Grin

strictlovingmum · 19/08/2011 20:59

YANBU, those are beautiful, and they are not called glasses, but rather red wine goblets, they are lovely, but as I said only for red wine, DH is in wine (import of fine Italian wines)business and he will agree.
I would imagine they would look stunning with white linen and white china formal dinner table.

Runs for cover and hide behind sofa, until dh comes home

Jellykat · 19/08/2011 21:00

I'm not cultured either, hence this question..

Why would Laura Ashley sell red wine glasses, if you're not supposed to put wine in 'em??

LineRunner · 19/08/2011 21:01

What's not to love about retro?

Plus - and here's the clincher - the Romans drank out of coloured wine glasses. If it was good enough for Marcus Aurelius...

VaginaPuddleduck · 19/08/2011 21:01

I know this has been said on the Radley Bag thread already, but I shall bastardise it.

They are the Per Una of wine glasses.

That's why they were in the sale Ephiny Grin

FellatioNelson · 19/08/2011 21:04

Well, he is right, but coloured glass is very pretty.

SquirtedPerfumeUpNoseInBoots · 19/08/2011 21:06

Maybe you should throw in the towel OP and get the taste for red wine! That'll teach him.

FellatioNelson · 19/08/2011 21:10

What you need in those glasses is a Christmas snowball, with cherry, or half a pint of Bailey's and loads of ice. They're delicious but wrong, and an affront to high culture, and they will suit the glasses very well.

DogsBestFriend · 19/08/2011 21:14

Technically DH is right if you want to be poncey about it! :o

MumblingRagDoll · 19/08/2011 21:16

Grin Fellatio! Ok then....find me some GOOD wine glasses....show me a nice set!

The British and Wine makes for the biggest set of faux-posey crap out.

People in countries wot make wine drink any wine with any food and out of any receptacle wot can (i) hold the stuff and (ii) get it down your gullet.

shakey1500 · 19/08/2011 21:19

Well, strictly speaking he is right BUT as said already, it was nice of you to buy them and when all's said and done, a glass is a glass. Personally I'd buy a really, stupendous bottle of red pour one glass and say "Well, obviously, YOU won't be wanting any...."

SunnilyEnough · 19/08/2011 21:21

If you want to shut him and his parents up, you need to get Riedel wine glasses - get the right glass for the type of wine he drinks most often.

HipHopOpotomus · 19/08/2011 21:23

You can drink wine out of anything, but if you are buying wine glasses specifically yes they should be clear. Seeing the colour and texture of the wine is part of the experience. Each wine is different from the next.

Visitor57 · 19/08/2011 21:23

I prefer my wine out of a clear glass. Those goblets are lovely but I couldn't drink out of them, it's a psychological thing.

I raved about this lovely wine I drank in Sicily (local, rustic, would probably taste horrible at home) it was served in a ceramic jug and I felt that added to the flavour. A well meaning friend bought me a set of ceramic goblets (at great expense because I know where they came from) but I cannot bring myself to drink wine from them. They look very pretty on the shelf though!

LydiaWickham · 19/08/2011 21:26

I agree with your DH. Sorry, he's just going to have to buy you nice new wine glasses.

FellatioNelson · 19/08/2011 21:27

Sorry that sounded really snidey didn't it! What I mean waaaas.. that they are lovely in a very nice in a bright, bold fun kind of way and therefore should have bright, bold fun drinks in them. Grin

Whatmeworry · 19/08/2011 21:27

If it was good enough for Marcus Aurelius...

Mind you, he was a Stoic :o
