To think Joey Barton should be setting a good example & not a bad one

Dh is arsenal fan & was watching game against Newcastle yesterday I was passing through at time Barton was viciously hauling a player up.

So aibu that at this time following this weeks rioting he should be behaving in a more exemplary manner & an example set by banning him for at least 3 games & fining him 6 weeks wages so footballers can start setting example to others.

Dh thinks iabu? I dont

What annoys me most is that footballers are such easy targets. Their wages and lifestyles are criticised but they are comparable to that other major TV and movie stars.

mayorquimby · 14/08/2011 19:39

There is. If the ref has seen it and dealt with it on the pitch then it can't be retrospectiely punished.
If the ref says he has missed it completely then he can watch the incident back on video and state in his report what he would have done had he seen the incident. If he says he would have red-carded him then it is up to the fa whether to charge him or not.
So it will be a matter of whether or not the ref indicates in his match report that he saw the incident or not. If he did then nothing can be done, if he didn't then he could be banned.

"What annoys me most is that footballers are such easy targets. Their wages and lifestyles are criticised but they are comparable to that other major TV and movie stars."

Yep annoys me too.
Equally annoying is when people with a distaste for football but a mild interest in rugby makes comments about how rugby is much better/doesn't have the evils of football. As someone who loves both sports it's clear that they both have problems but also that cheating is as actively encouraged in Rugby as in football.

wubblybubbly · 14/08/2011 19:47

Kendodd, I think you'll find that Bowyer and Woodgate didn't only play for Newcastle, but went on to other clubs after their time here. Woodgate even played for England. Why would you single out Newcastle in particular - are you a Mackem?

evenlessnarkypuffin · 14/08/2011 19:47

Yup. At least when footballers feign injury they don't use props.

ImperialBlether · 14/08/2011 19:59

mumxx I am putting this here since you have brought my name into it.

Joey's brother (Michael Barton) and his cousin (Paul Taylor) killed Anthony Walker, the most lovely 18 year old boy you will ever know.

That's what I was referring to when I mentioned his family.

mumxx · 14/08/2011 20:11

I am glad you clarified that...I really dont see what Paul Taylor has to do with Joey or Michael for that matter.

Do you behave in exactly the same way as your brother, sister or cousin...

CurrySpice · 14/08/2011 20:16

I haven't read the thread but it seems to be seen through pretty gooner-tinted spectacles!!

Before this incident (which I agree he should have been sent off for) an Arsenal player purposely stamped on him, which went unnoticed by the referee

And the Arsenal player that he (wrongly) hauled up had just blatently chetaed by diving

Of course, if your DH is anything like his team's esteemed manager Mr Wenger he "won't have seen" the stamp, or the cheating dive.

IMHO, it is also beholden on the manager of the team to stand up for what is right and Arsenal have got a pretty shameful cheating disciplinary record

Having said all that, Barton is a despicable thug and I think that if you're waiting for him to be an example, you'll wait a long time!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 14/08/2011 20:25

But Newcastle welcomed Bowyer & Woodgate with open arms when no one else would touch them. Having said that , no fans I know were pleased about that , nor the Barton transfer.

wubblybubbly · 14/08/2011 20:27

So who welcomed them with open arms then? That well known thug Sir Bobby Robson?

KenDoddsDadsDog · 14/08/2011 20:36

No, Freddy Shepherd. After West Ham had protested that they didn't want Bowyer. And if you know anything you would know Robson didn't want them either. But my friends are not the majority of the idiots who think thugs are heroes. And I include Roy Keane in that who was always a disgrace.

follyfoot · 14/08/2011 20:39

Cisse assaulted his pregnant wife (oh and a 15 year old boy)

Darren Ferguson assaulted his wife.

Lee Hughes was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving.

John Hartson kicked a colleague in the head.

Patrick Kluivert was convicted of manslaughter

Stan Collymore attacked Ulrika Jonsson

Terry Yorath ran a girl over whilst driving drunk

I could go on, its difficult to lay the responsibility for criminal footballers solely at Newcastle's door....

wubblybubbly · 14/08/2011 20:44

You're taking the piss if you reckon Freddy Shephered represents the fans of Newcastle United.

You obviously are a mackem.

mayorquimby · 14/08/2011 21:01

I think we can all agree most clubs have employed an odious player from time to time. Apart from my own. In the proud tradition of football fans everywhere everything bad that happens in the game happens in every team bar mine.

80sbabe · 14/08/2011 21:20

mayorquimby I think we can all agree most clubs have employed an odious player from time to time. Apart from my own. In the proud tradition of football fans everywhere everything bad that happens in the game happens in every team bar mine.

Grin Quite right - spoken like any football fan !

Wandaaa · 14/08/2011 23:50

Follyfoot, don't forget, Arsenal and England captain Tony Adams who was imprisoned for drink driving.

Aftereightsaremine, it's a shame you were only passing through and didn't see the slap by Gervinho or is reacting to provocation an acceptable example to set? You also missed the stamp by Song and the five Aresnal players booked for cheating cynical challenges and Szczesny for running the length of the pitch to get involved with the Barton/Gervinho incident or perhaps didn't see it Wenger is your role model or more likely you're someone who hasn't got a clue about football.

FWIW, I do think that Barton should have been sent off, but you can't start a thread having a go at Barton and ignore Song and Gervinho.

CRS · 15/08/2011 00:32

The team which my family have supported for 4 generations employed the charming Marlon King last season. My son wanted his name and number on the back of his kit shirt. Erm - no. The sex pest has now gone to Birmingham City, so I assume quite a few of the parents of young supporters there will be having the same conversation.

Aftereightsaremine · 15/08/2011 07:06

Wandaaa no I don't know much about football (loathe watching 22 men kicking a ball fir lots of money) but I do think Wenger is an idiot who makes himself look like a laughing stock everytime he didn't see a challenge. I used Barton as that was bit I saw but I would not have been afraid to pick on arsenal player. I remember telling dh at time that Tony Adams should not have been allowed back to arsenal. Same as now re Barton he told me iabu...

Oi! I said all that way back up the page!! Shock

Arsenal have got one of (if the the) worst disciplinary records in the premiership which always puzzles me when people talk of the "beautiful" football that the arse play

This imho comes from having a manager with not one ounce of backbone on the issue - and the players follow his "example" so you can tell you r DH to put that in his pipe and smoke it! :o

Columbia999 · 15/08/2011 12:02

Well said CurrySpice, Joey Barton is a vicious knobhead but Arsenal aren't called the Scum for nothing, especially by us Spurs fans! Grin

ThePosieParker · 15/08/2011 12:07

I would imagine Joey Barton would have been looting himself if he hadn't been able to kick a ball.

CurrySpice · 15/08/2011 12:18

Spurs is my second team - I was married to a Spurs fan for many years and spent too many nights at the Lane to give them up now. But I'm a Wolves fan primarily.

I'm going to see the Wolves v Spurs match at the Molineux next month and I'm very excited :o

Scaevola · 27/08/2011 13:47

BBC have an article today about Joey Barton and his tweets.

And he's now left NUFC and has joined QPR on free transfer.
