So can someone explain this to me...

BJ smashes up restaurants in Oxford. It's dismissed as youthful high jinks and he gets to be MP for Henley and Mayor of London.

Ursula Nevin(who was at home looking after her children at the time of the riots) foolishly accepts a pair of looted shorts from her friend. She gets 5 months in jail, loses her job and flat, her 2 small children go into care.

One rule for the rich, another for the poor. Where is the justice in all of this?

BJ smashes up restaurants in Oxford. Shit behaviour - no defence for it. However, BJ can pay to repair restaurant and therefore makes reparations privately with owener of restaurant. Crucially - owner of restuarant choses not to involve police. Matter does not go to court and does not become subject to criminal proceedings. Doesn't make what he did right but there you go.

UN is charged with handling stolen goods and either pleads or is found guilty. She is sentenced. Background of UN unknown (eg was this a first offence etc) but handling stolen goods does attract custodial sentence.

Not saying it is fair but thats the way of it.

I wonder why Boris was in Croydon since I though it was in Surrey? Is that right?

EdithWeston · 14/08/2011 13:19

BJ became MP then Mayor because he stood for office and more of the electorate chose him than anyone else, irrespective of his past. Any offences before that time would have been dealt with then - or perhaps no accusations of specific crimes were ever made?

Nevin committed a crime and has been duly sentenced. Has she lost her flat? I haven't seen that reported anywhere, and I'd have expected it to be pretty big news. And I thought I'd read that her children were being looked after within the family.

Croydon is classes as south London

CognitiveDissident · 14/08/2011 13:24

Croydon is part of Greater London. Only postcode snobs try to claim it's in Surrey ;)

carminagoesprimal · 14/08/2011 13:30

Rich Tories smashing up their own club does not affect entire communities - they're not out committing arson ( potentially killing 100's ) or mugging already injured people -

Nancy66 · 14/08/2011 13:44

They trashed restaurants in Oxford Carmina

In the case of the woman who accepted the stolen shorts - i'm not aware that she's lost her home or that her children are in care.
