I've started going to an adult swim on a week night and DP doesn't want me to wear a bikini as he thinks its asking for to much attention. I honestly cant see the problem in it, its just swimwear, right?

I think its odd, but its not up to dh to tell you what you to wear. Maybe he just thinks its weird to and is worried about people looking at you funny?- for your sake not for his?

Leisure centre and the gym I went to in the UK you woudl never have anyone wearing a bikin. FOr a swin class a sporty one piece makes sense

LadyFlumpalot · 12/08/2011 14:49

I wear a bikini to the swimming pool all the time - as mentioned upthread it looks better on me than a swimming costume what with my lack of boobage!

It's not unusual around here, just make sure it's a sporty bikini if you are going to be swimming swimming, or, you may find the top round your neck and the bottoms round your ankles! Grin

notcitrus · 12/08/2011 14:51

Not very practical for an adult swim (I assume you mean lots of lengths), but if you want to, why not. You'll be walking about 20 yards to get into the pool and then getting out looking like a drowned rat like everyone else!

I'd normally wear a one-piece suit for swimming, and IME most people do - but why not, wear what you feel comfortable in.

Most people are there to swim, not to perve at other swimmers, in the nicest possible way it's unlikely anyone will be paying you much attention regardless of what you wear! Everything is all blurry when you're wearing goggles (or have chlorine-water in your eyes) anyway!

natandjacob · 12/08/2011 15:03

its not that i desperatly want to wear it, i've just never found a swimsuit that compliments my body. I'm not going there to show off or anything but i like to look nice whenever possible.
I've got teeny tiny boobs so no chance of them popping out! I've seen a few other women wearing bikinis aswell so i dont stand out a mile. from what i've seen it only seems to be women who dont look too happy with their body that wear swimsuits. i like my body, im 22 and am a size 10. why not make the most of this while i can?

OP posts:
natandjacob · 12/08/2011 15:06

sounds like im being mean to anyone who doesnt feel comfortable wearing a bikini and i honestly dont mean it that way. Just saying i feel proud of my body and i know im not going to be young forever...iyswim?

I think your DP is unreasonable telling you what to wear. Mine has no idea what I wear swimming and wouldn't dream of interfering.

That said, I think wearing a beach bikini to the pool is strange. As are the people who lie around on loungers at the poolside when it's inside. They're not practical for swimming, you're only really visible for the walk from the changing room to the pool so I don't think looking nice really comes in to it. I suppose I can just about see why your partner might be a bit Hmm about the focus of looking nice over practicalities. Like wearing heels to play tennis or something.

QuintessentialShadow · 12/08/2011 16:44

Well, I think a bikini would possibly complement my cleavage more than my nike swimsuit, but I know what I am most comfortable wearing when swimming! Wear what you are comfortable with! Nobody can see your body while you are IN the pool. It is the coming out of the pool that worries me!

spilttheteaagain · 12/08/2011 17:15

Wear your bikini if you want to.

I have just got back from a bikini clad swim - am 9 months pg and my swimming costume would be far more indecent than my bikini.

I didn't notice any strange looks.

worraliberty · 12/08/2011 17:18

How is it weird to wear a bikini in a 'normal swimming pool'? Confused

I don't think I've worn a one piece swimsuit since I was a child

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 12/08/2011 17:22

I wear a bikini top and women's board-type shorts (well, they're shorter than that suggests ? high thigh). Mainly because I don't want to prune my bikini line but also have no desire to parade my pubic hair. Smile

Wear what you want and suggest that your partner takes a hike.

SingleMan25b · 12/08/2011 17:26

Your husband might be right about unwanted attention. But wear what you like.

Lucyinthepie · 12/08/2011 19:01

Bloody daft! A well fitting bikini is fine for swimming, particularly on a tiny little thing like you. Wear what you feel comfortable in.

catgirl1976 · 12/08/2011 19:01

??? A bikini is perfectly normal in a swimming pool. Lots of people wear them and if that's what you want to wear you wear it. Take no notice of your DH he is being odd. Perhaps he would like you to get whatever the hell that thing Nigella wore on the beach is called?

Odd. But agree, for christsake don't play volleyball in it.

mousesma · 12/08/2011 19:05

All-in-one is more usual for "proper" swimming because it's usually more comfortable and practical. However if you can swim comfortably in your bikini then theres is no reason not to wear it.

Lucyinthepie · 12/08/2011 19:11

I'm a size 10, and a lot older than Op. I have a lovely bikini that has the shorts-style bottom half, and a flattering (OK, lightly padded!) top. It's fine for serious swimming and looks much better on me than a cossie, so I wear it at every opportunity. On little people there is absolutely no chance of accidental "things falling out" you know.
I find it completely bizzare that we have some threads here where people proclaim about how natural nudity is and how nobody should be bothered about communal changing rooms (which I effin' hate!). Yet, here we have some worrying about an extra bit of skin being exposed when a lady gets out of the swimming pool. Confused

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 12/08/2011 19:28

I don't even own a one piece swimsuit and have no intention of buying one any time soon. I used to go to a well known chain gym and saw quite a few women doing lengths wearing bikinis, as did I. When I take DS swimming to the local pool I always wear a bikini and I'm nearly 39. I don't wear a beach-style bikini with string ties though, but one with slightly sturdier straps that I know is secure.

StopRainingPlease · 13/08/2011 14:21

"Just saying i feel proud of my body and i know im not going to be young forever...iyswim?"

Thing is, that sounds like you are wearing it in order to have people look at you!

discobeaver · 13/08/2011 15:25

22 and a size ten. Sob. And lucky cow emoticon.

Wear the bikini, and bloody right you should make the most of it. Your bloke is being an itsy bitsy teensy weensy bit controlling.

LolaRennt · 13/08/2011 15:46

. Just saying i feel proud of my body and i know im not going to be young forever...iyswim?

I agree with stoprainingplease that you do seem to be doing it for people to look at you not comfort, I can understand your bf feelign odd in that situation I guess.

Pregnant women wearing bikinis is different by the way everyone. First many women can't fit in to a normal swimsuit or cant be arsed to buy a maternity bathingsuit for 2 months they will use it. And beyond that the pregnancy swim classes (at least the one I went to) are hardly intensive fast swimming across the pool where you might pop out.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 13/08/2011 15:49

There's a bit of judgypants on the reasons for OP wanting to wear a bikini, no? Who cares? I wonder if her partner ever wears a nice shirt or good cologne when he goes out, because he knows people will look at him and wants to look good? And if the OP would try to stop him from doing so?

worraliberty · 13/08/2011 15:54

Just saying i feel proud of my body and i know im not going to be young forever...iyswim?

I simply took that to mean the OP may feel uncomfortable wearing a bikini when she's older, as she doesn't know what her body will look like then.

I don't think she means she particularly wears one so people look at her!

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 13/08/2011 15:55

Exactly, worra but if she wants people to look at her she should go for it anyway!

worraliberty · 13/08/2011 15:58

I agree. I'm 42 and haven't worn a one piece since I was a kid.

Though if anyone looked at me in the pool, I'd assume they're laughing at my drowning swan impression...known as my swimming strokes Blush
