AIBU?

to think that the media have been silenced??

I may be well off the mark here, but I find it very difficult to believe noone has been seriously hurt or even killed during these riots!!

Does anyone get the feeling that the media has been silenced from telling us of said deaths or injuries?

If this is the case then good as it will only cause more outrage and more riots.

Weatherspoons in town centre burnt down, Wilko's and a pound shop burnt out, another shop in Powys st. still burning, almost every other shop has smashed windows. Clearup can't move in yet because it's still a crime scene.

I can assure you I have more than an idea, seeing as a close family member was one of those policemen on the street last night, you know, the ones you were idly musing might be dead and hidden from the media?

How the fuck did you think the thread would go? Hmm Salacious gossiping about real people doing a dangerous job, did you expect just people agreeing with you?

It is a ridiculous idea to think anyone died in the line of duty and no-one reported it. If anything, the families and friends would post about it on FB and Twitter etc.

its reasonable to wonder if anyone was hurt in those fires....i watched the croydon shop burn for almost 30 mins.....there was no fire brigade.....watched the helicoptor footage. there were flats above but could not see a soul about

I very much doubt that. You have very few replies for an AIBU thread, I imagine most readers just thought "ugh" instead of bothering to write it down.

Actually, the bias I see is towards the negative. Not to downplay what the poeple affected have been through, but the news only seems to show burning London and failing police. Only on twitter have I seen the shopkeepers in Dalston who drove rioters away, or the woman shouting at rioters in Hackney, or the 'Riot Wombles' who are volunteering today to help clean up the damage.

Cogito- if your point is that some of the reporters themselves can't photograph because of restrictions- I agree.
My point is that the press get photos from other sources and pays lot of money. They don't seem to be doing this. The photos are out there

I think its being under reported, well I certainloy think that not all areas affected have been mentioned in the media.

Where I live is affected and it hasnt been mentioned apart from on twitter, facebook etc lots of pictures from eyewitnesses on there.

DeathOrCake · 09/08/2011 13:40

The BBC were reporting them as protestors last night.

They are not protestors, they are rioting scum.

deathorcake It's jarring but Sky were doing that too last night but only the BBC have been attacked in the papers for it today.

I don't think it's a lefty conspiracy. I just think it's a slip of the tongue.

whats wrong with me? I object to the OP idly musing about dead policemen and media conspiracy. Comparing me to the "yobs on the street" is frankly ridiculous.
Only one kind of opinion allowed on these threads?

I agree the speculation about possible police and emergency services deaths is tasteless. You may not have meant to be, hellospoon but your OP does come across as sensationalist.

The police may be asking for photos not to be published, I suppose. That's less likely to be censorship than an attempt to preserve evidence and not prejudice future prosecutions. They can get court orders under PACE 1984 to get hold of unbroadcast footage, photos sent in by viewers/readers etc for use in identifying crims. There will be a lot of that being done in the next few days.
Some broadcasters may be picking and choosing to avoid reprisals on their crews if the rioters think they've been revealed in the media.

There are loads and loads of smaller-scale incidents going on. SOmeone on another thread posted a Google map of incidents that showed lots I hadn't heard of on the BBC. All that shows, I think, is how quickly things flare up and die down, and how hard it is for police or BBC or Sky or whoever to be present at all of them.

We really really need some heavy rain tonight, don't we?

hellospoon · 09/08/2011 14:15

no siamo, all opinions are welcome as every single person is entitled to one and none will be the same.

What is not allowed on threads is PERSONAL ATTACKS! which is exactly what you are doing.
