Are ''the people left in charge ...'' coping lemon?

Doesn't look like it to me. But hey. What do I know.

janelikesjam · 09/08/2011 02:34

I suspect, his political carreer, is over.

OP posts:
izzywhizzyletsgetbusy · 09/08/2011 02:37

The UK's current crop of politicians of ALL parties are a bunch of self-serving egoists who don't give a fuck about anything except their own self-aggrandisement.

LemonDifficult · 09/08/2011 02:38

He is going to be there. As soon as it became obvious, at 3pm Monday, when things started in Peckham, that this was not dying down then your Prime Minister decided to get on a plane.

He didn't take this decision as he was drying off from a long dip in the pool in front of Sky News. The option of him returning will have been being discussed from Sunday morning. The Home Secretary is here, so the decision will have been taken between them to allow her to remain in charge, and to send in Clegg, while they monitored the situation.

And for all those here who seemed to know that it was going to be this bad - how?! Did the police? Seems like the police, the media and the political classes all seem amazed at the gross lawlessnes.

fargate · 09/08/2011 02:57

But the Home Sec only came back from holiday Monday.[?18 hours ago]

They just don't look serious. I find that really strange.

ModreB · 09/08/2011 07:18

Lemon the problem is that nobody was left in charge. Cameron, Clegg, Osborne, Johnson, May, all of them were on holiday at the same time.

sockpoppet · 09/08/2011 07:21

He didn't like seeing Cleggy out dealing with the situation and meeting the people, he soon came back then.

He was only in Tuscany ffs, not the remote amazon. It would only take him 5 hours to get back.

freybean · 09/08/2011 07:28

i was just going to make the point ModreB

larry the cat was running the country last week Hmm

EdithWeston · 09/08/2011 07:33

"They just don't look serious. I find that really strange".

I suspectthat is a legacy of style over substance, which characterised the 00s.
What matters is what is being done, not what time planes had seats available on some routes 48 hours after the initial outbreak in Tottenham.

(Very misleading title to this thread, BTW).

FellatioNelson · 09/08/2011 07:36

As PM, if you had a knee jerk reaction to everything bad that happened every time you left the country, you'd never ever manage to leave it at all, or you'd spend more time travelling to and from it than you spent in abroad!

The first wave of rioting happened at night. There was no way of knowing at that point that it would continue for a second night. After the second night I have no doubt he would have been in constant contact with the people monitoring the situation, and planning to come home. By day three he was travelling home, and now he IS home.

Until we give him a 'Beam me up Scotty' facility I can't imagine what more you could expect.

wannaBe · 09/08/2011 07:43

So now he is back, what exactly is it people expect to happen?
Instead of laying this at dc's door, perhaps we should be looking at blaming the scum responsible.

Iggly · 09/08/2011 07:47

I think it was the absence of anything other than feeble bleating from senior politicians that did the damage. Same for Miliband - he tweeted his outrage FFS Hmm

sockpoppet · 09/08/2011 07:51

Milliband has missed a trick. He should have been very vocal about his outrage - this is mostly happening in labour constituencies .

traceybeaker · 09/08/2011 08:03

Get out the water canons and tear gas......................thhats for the rioters not DC

FellatioNelson · 09/08/2011 08:57

sorry, just realised I wrote 'in abroad'. Hmm Dumbass. Grin

Oh please lets send in Boris & Cameron in riot gear. Our very own dynamic duo.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 09/08/2011 09:12

Has there ever been a politician since Churchill, who hasn't been out for himself, whatever the party?

People who say that Cameron is ineffective, fair enough, but what about Blair/Brown? Did a good job, did they?

Jenski · 09/08/2011 09:14

OP -YANBU.

Seems Cameron is always on holiday - useless bullsh*tter.

capricorn76 · 09/08/2011 09:21

Nobody expects the Prime Minister to be kitted out in riot gear, however, most of us expect him not to be sipping cocktails at a swim up bar in Tuscany whilst his country burns. He was 5 hours away and could've jumped on a private plane.

He needs to be visible, he needs to show leadership. The fact that there appears to be no authority in this country, really scares me. It feels like the opening scenes in Children of Men here, total anarchy. This is is what happens when you keep banging on about small government, it finally becomes so small that it's no longer there. I live in North London, I hear helicopters every night, I haven't slept properly for 2 days. The least DC can do is look like he cares and be here.

The UK has shown that it has weak leadership and is not safe for investment.

SoupDragon · 09/08/2011 09:23

have I missed something or are we in the 21st century where we have things like video conferencing and all manner of ways to stay in touch wherever we are? I rather suspect he was keeping involved.

No, you're right. Of course he was just sitting on a lounger in the sun with a cocktail thinking "oh, I'll let them handle it back home. " Hmm

tethersend · 09/08/2011 09:24

"People who say that Cameron is ineffective, fair enough, but what about Blair/Brown? Did a good job, did they?"

To assume that anyone who criticises the PM is a Labour supporter is very short sighted. Besides, I don't remember there being riots like this under the Blair/Brown administration, so the comparison is completely erroneous.

I am staggered that anybody can defend Cameron and Boris not returning from their holidays immediately. It is really scary here in London. For them to stay on holiday even after one night of rioting is indefensible; I think even some rightwingers will agree.

tethersend · 09/08/2011 09:26

It's not about what he can do- it's about what he is seen to be doing. People need to feel that he is taking it seriously, and they don't.

freybean · 09/08/2011 09:36

please remember that this is daves 4th holiday this year
