A friend just text me and said she thought going to London (Natural History Museum) tomorrow isn't a good idea because of the unrest in Tottenham and Enfield.
Is she being over sensitive?? (hope so as I'm reeeeeally looking forward to it!)

I was planning a trip to London tomorrow, but I am going to re-evaluate for Wednesday.

Lots of train stations closed now due to "civil unrest". Transport will be the issue rather than rioters in South Ken I should think.

I wouldn't go. The police don't need extra people coming into town centres. I feel so sorry for the residents caught up in all this violence. It's so unfair on them. Stay safe.

I work near the NHM, and it's been fine today, well away from the problem areas and anyway you're unlikely to have any trouble during the day. The only thing I'd be concerned about is what would happen if your Tube/train route home got closed due to any trouble starting in the early evening.

Maybe see how things look in the morning and decide then? On the upside you may find it's quieter than usual due to people cancelling London trips!

Don't come. It might not be an issue in the centre but getting in and out could be difficult. I came home from the Science Museum with DS1 early today as I predicted it was going to go and thank God I did. Two hours later there were running battles on the street we took the bus home on. Another time.

I would go.

I'll also be going in to London this week.

Just aim to start getting home before the Rush hour is my advice.

(and I am appaled at what is happening)

The thing is, lots of the trouble isn't being reported on the main news...I suppose because there's too much of it now. But lots of photos appearing on FB of trouble breaking out in Romford, Ilford, Barking and various other surrounding Boroughs.

Dh and I live and work in London. And we were all due to go out tomorrow night in central London. And we are changing our plans. It's the hassle of getting caught up when all the transport miraculously vanishes in thin air!

Report
squeakytoy · 08/08/2011 21:51

I wouldnt go. This is spreading and escalating. All transport is likely to be affected, and it really isnt worth the risk.

Yes Worra you're spot on.

Bethnal Green, Ilford, Upton Park, Forest Gate, Romford, Barking they're all kicking off.

Roads to shopping centres in Beckton are closed.

Train stations being closed.

However, I have in mind that these idiots criminals will be snoring their heads off tomorrow and doubtful to go near South Ken. in the daytime.

I think the speed at which the mayhem is moving around is the most scary thing. It's popping up all over the place. Most public transport that moves around in the centre of London starts/moves through the affected areas. Clapham Junction, Croydon, Stratford etc etc. Even if the centre of town is OK, transport within it will be affected.

Just been watching the news. Absolutely awful and shocking.
Spoke to DH. We're gonna put it on hold, hopefully till Friday.
Play it by ear.
Its really scary.
My eldest DS is up in London - Raynes Park so should be ok. Have just spoken to him. Can't wait for him to get home now.

Yep! And having watched the footage and hearing about the travel system and seeing mobile phone footage especially of the way these arseholes are behaving, we'll definitely be staying closer to home tomorrow.

sis reports all quiet in Primrose Hill. Says there might have been a raised eyebrow over a cupcake but that's all so far.
Just trying to lighten the mood - hope you all stay safe.

It's all confined to the poorer suburbs. It's apparently kicking off in Lewisham, about a mile away from where I am sitting and apart from hearing a helicopter once, I would have no idea if I were not looking at the TV. I just came from from the City on my own in the dark and it was fine. Transport working fine. It's confined to small pockets, although there are several of them now.

It has just been announced that the policeman who was shot was shot by a police bullet. Boris is on his way back, i think if anything things are going to escalate.

It would make life easier for the police if there was less movement of people for now.

It is not just poor areas - i have heard it is kicking off in Kingston.

JustFiveMinutesHAHAHA · 08/08/2011 22:06

I think in the daytime you would be fine - but honestly, I wouldn't risk it with children and the transport will be a nightmare - Londoners really don't need anyone else going into the city making things even more difficult.

Glad to see you've changed your plans. I just asked dh for his view. He is normally very much not to be diverted from plans by anything - but even he says don't go.

fluffles · 08/08/2011 22:12

depends where you live and where you're travelling but there's trouble around clapham junction so i wouldn't travel in from the south through that station just in case you get turfed off the train.

It's all confined to the poorer suburbs.

it was - but i don't think clapham junction / west end of wandsworth is really quite in the same category as the previous locations. or parts of croydon.

it's unpredictable right now.
