To be considering reporting a colleague?

missmaryp · 08/08/2011 11:04

I have just recieved an email from a work colleague, from and to a work addres (local authority) and I find it highly offensive. I can't believe in the organisation we work she would send this on. Well I can't believe it's been sent full stop really as I find it racist.

Am I over-reacting to be considering reporting this email?? A big part of me doesn't want to get the lady 'in to trouble', but another part of me is annoyed she would ever think it's ok to forward this.

Here is the email:

YOU SEE MY FRIENDS IT AINT JUST ME WHO IS PISSED RIGHT OFF WITH ALL THESE "CORRECT WAY TO LIVE AND DO AS I SAY NAZIS" TELLING ME WHAT HOW I SHOULD LIVE MY LIFE.

TAKE A READ!

This should be required reading for every man, woman and child in the UK , United States of America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand etc.

"I'm 55+ and I'm Tired"

I'm 65+. Except for brief period in the 50's when I was doing my National Service, I've worked hard since I was 17. Except for some serious health challenges, I put in 50-hour weeks, and didn't call in sick in nearly 40 years. I made a reasonable salary, but I didn't inherit my job or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, it looks as though retirement was a bad idea, and I'm tired. Very tired.

I'm tired of being told that I have to "spread the wealth" to people who don't have my work ethic. I'm tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy to earn it.

I'm tired of being told that Islam is a "Religion of Peace," when every day I can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and daughters for their family "honour"; of Muslims rioting over some slight offence; of Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because they aren't "believers"; of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning teenage rape victims to death for "adultery"; of Muslims mutilating the genitals of little girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur'an and Shari'a law tells them to.

I'm tired of being told that out of "tolerance for other cultures" we must let Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries use our oil money to fund mosques and mandrassa Islamic schools to preach hate in Australia, New Zealand, UK, America and Canada, while no one from these countries are allowed to fund a church, synagogue or religious school in Saudi Arabia or any other Arab country to teach love and tolerance.

I'm tired of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global warming, which no one is allowed to debate.

I'm tired of being told that drug addicts have a disease, and I must help support and treat them, and pay for the damage they do. Did a giant germ rush out of a dark alley, grab them, and stuff white powder up their noses or stick a needle in their arm while they tried to fight it off?

I'm tired of hearing wealthy athletes, entertainers and politicians of all parties talking about innocent mistakes, stupid mistakes or youthful mistakes, when we all know they think their only mistake was getting caught. I'm tired of people with a sense of entitlement, rich or poor.

I'm really tired of people who don't take responsibility for their lives and actions. I'm tired of hearing them blame the government, or discrimination or big-whatever for their problems.

Yes, I'm damn tired. But I'm also glad to be 55+... Because, mostly, I'm not going to have to see the world these people are making. I'm just sorry for my granddaughters and their children.

There is no way this will be widely publicised, unless each of us sends it on!

This is your chance to make a difference.

" I'm 55+ and I'm tired.

If you don't forward this you are part of the problem".

As I say, an angry little child. hey-ho.

Pan · 08/08/2011 19:36

Years ago in the workplace we had rascist jokes, Irish-based discrimination, calendar-girl stuff, no allowance for family needs, rubbish maternity leave, recruitment left to whether the applicant is 'one of us' sort of thing. So yes good riddance to all of that, and welcolme to a world where the workplace is a place where bad attitudes are challenged.

Ormirian · 08/08/2011 19:49

I work in the private sector and our email rules are similar. WHy would my employers, who have an image and reputation, and customers and share-holders, to consider, risk being associated with such stupidity and potential for offence?

scottishmummy · 08/08/2011 19:51

get thread deleted you are gossiping

i wouldnt reproduce email in its entirety here this is private work business, and until it is resolved i dont think you should drag it or the email across mn. report to a manager, they can look into it

beachesandboats · 08/08/2011 22:03

The bit that winds me up most about this email is -
'I'm tired of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global warming, which no one is allowed to debate.'

I'm tired of selfish fuckers who are in denial about global warming as it means they might have to make a few changes to their lifestyle...meanwhile people in the world's poorest countries - East Africa for example - live with the effects of said global warming. You're allowed to debate it, but good luck with finding any solid evidence that it doesn't exist! Aaargh.

milliemae · 08/08/2011 22:17
  1. Reply, telling her you're going to report it: she's entitled to her own views in private but should not send them to / from an employers email system. (Had it be done private email to private email, you would have the right but not the duty to report it).
  1. Report her, but making the point that it might be a hoax so asking for it to be investigated objectively.
fedupofnamechanging · 08/08/2011 22:20

There is an argument that global warming is natural and not particularly affected by what people are doing - the idea that it has happened before and will happen again. There are also arguments that various governments have manipulated the data in order to support the raising of additional taxes. I have read that data which does not support global warming has been mysteriously lost.

All this might be total bollocks - I really don't know, but it is a fool who accepts without question everything the government says as total fact. It's okay to ask.

izzywhizzyletsgetbusy · 08/08/2011 22:58

"Mind you the people who believe such things in the email, don't fight one to one, they burn out houses with women and children in, in the early hours."

WTF Birds? That's a partiicularly insenstive comment to make given current ongoing events.

"Your collegaue is being paid to work" Quite right Rick, but so is the op. Do you intend to say silent on the subject of the op wasting her employer's time on this site? I would hazard a guess that she spent considerably more time here than it took her colleague to send the email to her.

yaimee · 08/08/2011 23:17

Report it! It's disgusting!

downtothesea · 09/08/2011 08:02

Birds and Pan - for people who work in local authorities, you both have very little/immature knowledge of the historical and political contexts for your beliefs and what previous generations did to give you the freedom to express those beliefs.
You both seem to have no memories of the societies which existed before the wonderful world we have today (before page 3, and the 50s and 60s where most of your tales seem rooted). There is a price to pay for mass censorship and the control of ideas by the state. You think you're immune from this? You both seem to fit into the 'I was just following orders' group and unable to take responsibilty to make your own minds up.
Well, sit back and carry on, you're not making any contribution anyway.

Birdsgottafly · 09/08/2011 11:38

downtothesea-i have extensive knowledge of political and historical background, i care about the times i live in and what works. I have developed my own ability to think, having studied family members whose bigoted views made no sense and listened to other family members (from around the world), topped that up with degree level (several paid for by me) education and extensive travel. I am not advocating mass censorship, just respect for others in the workplace, do what you want (as i have said several times) outside of it, but we have much needed codes of conduct.

"You're not making any contribution anyway" i can only be bothered with the response of KNOBHEAD, wtf are you on about with that last post? i am no longer going to engage with you.

scaryteacher · 09/08/2011 13:41

'Unless we make it mandatory that everyone educate themselves then we need the restriction on those that are talking rubbish and spreading hatred.'

Birds: the email expressed a point of view. Many are concerned about over dependence on the welfare state; about the spread of Islam and Shari'a law in the UK; about the double standards applied for those of other religions in Islamic countries; about climate change (and I am hugely sceptical about this, it seems to be the 21st century version of what is being used to scare the populace); again with drug addiction...there are other things one can be addicted to that are less harmful and cheaper (chocolate); and yes, many are concerned about the lack of responsibility coupled with the sense of entitlement that seems to prevail these days.

You cannot stop people holding opinions, and even if you 'educate' them they may still choose to hold the same views, and these may be based on balanced and rational thought, as opposed to the brainwashing you seem to espouse. Life isn't black and white - there are some very murky shades of grey in there. I hadn't noticed that the vanishing of apartheid had much difference to the corruption, bigotry and violence in SA. I have friends who have renounced the SA citizenship and taken Belgian because they never want to go back.

QuintessentialShadow · 09/08/2011 13:44

Personal opinion has no place in work emails between colleagues. They can use their personal mail for that.

milkmilklemonade · 09/08/2011 14:30

I received something like this recently from someone who had fwdfwdfwd, original sender used an NHS email address. I felt like complaining because public time and money was spent on sending racist emails and then, in my opinion, even more depressing ladies "treat" emails where you scroll down to see a naked man. Yuck. More galling since I am a district nurse and am not able to look at wound care websites from work because my trust blocks any image with more than a certain number of skin coloured pixels to stop us looking at porn (!), I have to rely on my iphone and pay.
Anyway, I didn't complain because I decided that the person is probably a good nurse who would end up getting in serious trouble and I didn't want that on my conscience.

milkmilklemonade · 09/08/2011 14:31

Plus, I am at work on MN now so what does that make me?? Anyone else at work?

Rhinestone · 09/08/2011 14:50

Where is it racist? It is critical of a religion, yes, but can't see where it's racist.

milkmilklemonade · 09/08/2011 15:00

Rhinestone, I think you are nitpicking. Describing political correctness as Nazi ism is hardly nice.

Rhinestone · 09/08/2011 15:11

No I'm not. Religion and race are not the same thing. You can't choose your race but you do choose how you interpret and act in the name of your religion. People who murder their daughters in the name of Islam and call it an 'honour killing' made a choice.

And please don't infer that I described political correctness as Nazism - I didn't.

milkmilklemonade · 09/08/2011 15:24

sorry I didn't mean to infer that. I am just saying that the anti everything message of this email is full of hate and a bit pathetic.

Rhinestone · 09/08/2011 15:36

Oh for fucks sake, what is wrong with being anti- "Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and daughters for their family "honour"; of Muslims rioting over some slight offence; of Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because they aren't "believers"; of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning teenage rape victims to death for "adultery"; of Muslims mutilating the genitals of little girls."

There's something wrong with you if you're not anti those things. In fact you SHOULD hate all those things.

None of those things are perpetrated by a single race so it's not racist to condemn them.

milkmilklemonade · 09/08/2011 15:45

Holy crap

milkmilklemonade · 09/08/2011 15:49

in my post I was referring to racist emails I had received, just in the context of offensive emails, was not particularly referring to this one. No need to be so aggressive.

Pan · 09/08/2011 18:07

I'm afraid there is a need to be aggressice - that's what xenophobes do, along with all the others further up thread.

Pan · 09/08/2011 18:08

or aggressive even..

scaryteacher · 09/08/2011 18:51

What is xenophobic about disliking a system which does not allow democracy, but rather works for the establishment of a theocracy which would impinge on the rights of women?
