I've just seen a post on facebook saying that someone is proud that their 6 week old baby has just eaten a whole jar of puree... Shock

Has anyone else seen examples of interesting parenting first hand that they thought were the stuff of MN myth? I honestly didnt think that people this, ahem, naive existed!

We had pizza for tea.....with white flour, no salt, buffalo mozzarella, olives, garlic, spinach/rocket/parma ham.....

fucking yummy.

ThePosieParker · 04/08/2011 19:21

Finished with mango smoothie ice lollies......and I had a large glass of stella, off to beat the dcs.

bumbleymummy · 04/08/2011 19:34

Actually usual children don't NEED dairy and the fats they need are unsaturated rather than the saturated fats found in dairy, meat etc. I'm not saying that my children never have saturated fats btw (before someone jumps on me) but because children often have meat and dairy in their diet everyday (on top of crisps, chocolate, cake biscuits in many cases) they are probably getting too much saturated fat and they don't NEED that.

bumbleymummy · 04/08/2011 19:35

Posie, your pizza sounds lovely. (except for the ham Wink) Did you make the dough yourself?

ThePosieParker · 04/08/2011 19:35

Two of mine have soya and we have meat once /twice a week.....we're a quorn family.

ThePosieParker · 04/08/2011 19:37

Yes, but just white flour and not strong.....pigging annoying. Ham was for me!!! The children even put cucumber on theirs!!

bumbleymummy · 04/08/2011 19:38

Pescatarians here (lapsed veggie!) :)

ThePosieParker · 04/08/2011 19:38

Don't know why people don't make their own dough, sooooooo cheap and takes twenty minutes.....then 30 to rise....5 to knock out.....

bumbleymummy · 04/08/2011 19:39

Can you PM me your recipe if it's completely failsafe? I'm not good with dough!

ThePosieParker · 04/08/2011 19:39

Can't beat a seafood pizza, cuttle fish, squid, prawns....mmmmm. DS1 just has tomato and garlic.

rhondajean · 04/08/2011 19:42

They need the protein from lean meat (or substitute) and calcium in their diet, which is higher in skimmed milk anyway. Agreed feeding them on red meat, cheese and cream isnt good (all the time!)

Sirzy · 04/08/2011 19:43

I love homemade Pizza, I always make a big batch of the dough and freeze whats left to make it even easier next time round.

Let DS help make them up the other day he had almost as much fun making it as he did eating it!

KaySirah · 04/08/2011 19:44

i weaned at that age

was normal then

kids still alive - no allergies

An extract from my local paper about the rise in childhood eating disorders:

Dr Gillian Harris, of Birmingham Children's Hospital, who runs an eating disorder clinic for children, said the triggers were varied.

She said: "Magazines are filled with images of slim men and women who are idealised and fat people who are ridiculed.

"These images create a fear of fat in children.

"Also, school now is much more focused on succeeding.

"By encouraging children to want to be perfect, they are being encouraged to be anorexic.

"Children are constantly bombarded with ideas about healthy eating. Before, they may not have known what was a low-calorie food. Now they do.

bumbleymummy · 04/08/2011 19:46

All homemade pizza dough recipes very welcome! Please, if you have an easy one that always turns out right and is relatively quick (ie. doesn't involve several hours in the hotpress) send them this way! TIA :)

bumbleymummy · 04/08/2011 19:49

Maybe because there are more high calorie foods around now that they need to know should only be enjoyed in moderation rather than everyday....

ThePosieParker · 04/08/2011 20:03

Jamie Oliver pizza dough. 1kg of flour (strong flour) some people substitute 200g semolina flour. Put 15g yeast in 600ml warm water, chuck in table spoon olive oil, and 1 table spoon caster sugar, I leave for 15 mins.

Flour in kenwood and slowly add yeast/water or big circle and add yeast water with a fork slowly. ((make a large and wide well of flour)

Leave in cling film for 15 minutes somewhere warm and then knock out (which means squeeze out the air). Then roll out. takes 10-15 mins in 200 oven.

For easy pizza sauce, one whole garlic, handful of basil (no prep just bash). Put garlic in pan, cook slightly (you can add rock salt) in olive oil, add tins/carton of toms, (I add four), simmer for 5 mins, add basil, further 5 mins.......strain, bring back to pan and simmer to reduce for 5 mins.....

This can be used as a base for other pasta dishes too, so bung in your corn, and basic pasta dish.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar- Come on, a Sad face because some kids haven't tried samphire? A bit much, no? It's not exactly a staple food in the majority people's diets is it?

hairfullofsnakes · 04/08/2011 20:09

Flour I'm kenwood? Whassat mean?!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 04/08/2011 20:13

Bullet.... I thought JenaiMarr was joking about the samphire.... wow, if she wasn't... Shock

I don't think I've tried it either...

rhondajean · 04/08/2011 20:17

Think Kenwood's being used as a generic name for a food processor - flour in food processor?

BulletWithAName · 04/08/2011 20:24

*Bullet.... I thought JenaiMarr was joking about the samphire.... wow, if she wasn't...

I don't think I've tried it either... *

I hope she was! Grin

I've never tried it, Sad for me too then.

OpinionatedPlusSprogs · 04/08/2011 20:25

@noobynoob I had a toddler just like that. She is now a perfectly healthy six year old. Some babies are naturally fussy eaters. She now eats a healthy diet and is a very well behaved and happy child. Nothing wrong with my parenting at all. I doubt there is anything wrong with yours. Ignore the smug twats.

ThePosieParker · 04/08/2011 20:29

Kenwood.....great food mixer with twisty dough parts!!!

If not make a large circle of flour with a well in the middle, think of it like sand banks!!
