AIBU to serve beans on toast as a main meal

Very busy, working all day, have to work all evening. Suggested above. Dsd, 10, disgusted as 'not enough'. Dp via phone agreed with dsd - not around to help - usually does more than his share tbh. What is wrong with it? Surely it is better than what I did feed her which was chippy chips and a fish cake?

mumcentre that is still one of my parents favourite meals today; corn beef, peppers, onions, tinned tomatoes and rice.

I only eat it when I go there and it isn't half bad

Mumcentreplus · 02/08/2011 20:53

[impressed] @ chicle's rice haul...

yeah it isn't ...but when you hear Corned Beef you think erm nope!...when you taste it however..tis some good tasty food!

GetOrfMoiSamsungFridgeFreezer · 02/08/2011 20:59

Yes - the rice. It is so unbelievably cheap compared to tiny 500g of Tilda. Very good rice as well. I love it - I have got a fantastic Indian grocer just down the road from me, and as I cook curry a lot it saves me a fortune. Tins of Indian tomatoes are brilliant as well, something like 20p a tin compared to 70p for napolina ones. They are ideal for curries (you wouldn't want to cook anything Italian with them as they are too acidy however).

5inthebed - that was exactly what i was going to write - yummy! Beans on toast is fine.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 02/08/2011 21:04

Enough for a meal, she could eat it first and then decide if she's still hungry. A bit drama queen, if you ask me, all that texting with your DP about the contents of her meal.

readywithwellies · 02/08/2011 21:06

Cristina she didnt text her dad. I asked him hours later. But she did complain about it to a family member who told me it wasn't a decent meal! But that's another thread!

Ah, you said he'd agreed by phone, I thought by text between the two of them.

We love beans on toast here. Quite often if teh kids have got training so have to eat early me and dp have it for dinner after they have gone to bed. Mind you it does have to have an egg with it and cheese on top lol. If that can fill a grown adult who is a postman so in a very physical job im sure a 10 year old can surive on it.

proudfoot · 02/08/2011 21:24

YANBU

A perfectly fine dinner every now and again

I often make quick meals. As long as they are reasonably healthy and filling, no one would complain. DH certainly wouldn't say after the event that giving the dcs beans on toast wasn't sufficient. The dcs wouldn't complain, we are fortunate that they are not particularly fussy.

I do agree with what someone else said about it being in the mind and the issue partly being there is no meat.

We have quick meals (at least 2-3 days per week) for many reasons. Price is one, both of the electricity/gas if not using the oven and the raw ingredients. Also speed/convenience. Less preparation, less washing up etc.

Quick things we have include pasta with a fairly instant sauce. Either pesto or a decent jar brand, or cheese sauce (I make a large quantity and freeze it) Serve with fresh or frozen veg, e.g. peas or broccoli.

Beans on toast, or beans with jacket potatoes. Or jacket potato with other fillings.

"quick" risotto. Can't post recipes I literally make it up each time, any veg that needs eating, and bits of cooked meat hanging round, few prawns out of the freezer etc

Other days I do much more elaborate meals, home made chilli, home made fish pie from scratch, lovely roast dinners.

ihatecbeebies · 02/08/2011 21:28

YABU, maybe a lunch but no definitely not a dinner unless she wasn't that hungry and was happy with eating just that on its own which she clearly wasn't.

evaangel · 02/08/2011 21:30

as long as its heinz beans with a touch of grated cheese...my children love it

ihatecbeebies · 02/08/2011 21:32

Just read your post again and seen that she is ten, maybe show her how to make some simpler meals herself so if she's unhappy with what you want to make or you've had a hectic day she can make herself something

bettyspagetti · 02/08/2011 21:38

Beans on toast (especially with grated cheese on top) is not an unreasonable tea but all the sickos who have suggested serving it with an egg are definitely unreasonable - eggs and beans served together should be illegal! (As should be eggs and ketchup or eggs and tinned tomato )

CurrySpice · 02/08/2011 21:39

I'd say if her dad doesn't think it's sufficient he should get home quick smart and start cooking!

BoT is fine once in a while. Don't fret.

TBH I only ever serve it up (with cheese) as a lunch but if I suggested it for tea, my DCs would be delighted!

Mumcentreplus · 02/08/2011 21:41

Personally I would not eat it with an egg...but it was an idea Grin

YouDoTheMath · 02/08/2011 21:43

Oooh I LOVE it! Esp with grated cheese and black pepper. I make the most of DP going away on business to enjoy this for dinner.

SiamoFottuti · 02/08/2011 21:47

if 3 slices of toast with a whole tin of beans isn't filling, what the fuckity do you be eating of an evening? Half a cow?

boyoboy · 02/08/2011 22:00

Beans on toast is perfectly fine.......BUT it has to be Heinz beans, nothing else will do!!
