AIBU to serve beans on toast as a main meal

Very busy, working all day, have to work all evening. Suggested above. Dsd, 10, disgusted as 'not enough'. Dp via phone agreed with dsd - not around to help - usually does more than his share tbh. What is wrong with it? Surely it is better than what I did feed her which was chippy chips and a fish cake?

chicletteeth I would be glad to enlighten you as to my evening culinary offerings. Hmm

Last night was tuna steaks with rice and roasted vegetables, the night before was pasta and homemade pasta sauce - tinned tomatoes with red onion and olives. Tonight is steak and chips and sugar snap peas.

Most basic thing we'd have for a quick supper is smoked salmon and scrambled egg on toast.

chicletteeth · 02/08/2011 20:28

What's the Hmm for?
It was a genuine question?

chicletteeth · 02/08/2011 20:30

Your food sounds lovely BTW, similar to what I would give.

readywithwellies · 02/08/2011 20:30

Rhinestone and chiccteeth - put your handbags away Grin

It sounded rather sarcastic. Sorry if I took it the wrong way.

Mumcentreplus · 02/08/2011 20:30

Yes Getorf... I usually buy both! I go to see my dad who lives in East London or my MIL who lives in Brixton and raid the shops for chilli flakes and whole dried chillis

RoryCeilingCat · 02/08/2011 20:30

Another one who thinks YANBU. My mum did a course for work one evening a week for a couple of years, so dad made dinner that night. It was either pizza or 'Cheesey Beanos' which was cheese on toast with baked beans on top, followed by Heinz sponge pudding, boiled in the can, with custard. My sister and I loved Tuesdays...

(Dad has become a foodie in his old age and will now cook quail, pheasant etc. He still likes beans on toast though ;-)

Rhinestone · 02/08/2011 20:31

Sorry, am hormonal.

And scared of readywithwillies. Grin

Mumcentreplus · 02/08/2011 20:31

The whole ones bashed are more spicy Grin

notlettingthefearshow · 02/08/2011 20:31

It's OK as a meal every now and then but it is on the small side. I'd probably rather do a microwaved jacket potato with cheese/beans/tuna salad for not much extra work.

chicletteeth · 02/08/2011 20:31

Wasn't meant to be!

It's ok, you can invite me over for tuna steaks to make up for it Grin

I love beans on toast with dried chilli seeds sprinkled on top

befuzzled · 02/08/2011 20:33

I was going to do beans on toast this evening but so tired after hot day out I cba even with the cba meal as heating up the beans seemed too much hassle so mine had peanut butter on toast and a banana!

They had weetabix for breakfast and have literally been eating all day whilst out though - stuff I took, sandwiches, strawberries, grapes, yougurt, fruit pouches, ice cream, sweets etc etc

Yesterday they had fish pie (from M and S gulp!)

Come on guys, it is "the hottest day of the year" and all that

GetOrfMoiSamsungFridgeFreezer · 02/08/2011 20:33

Indian grocers are great - the big bags of chillis are about £2.

Also you will not find fresher garlic, ginger and coriander.

Plus I love looking at the odds and sods they sell - I haven't a clue what some of it is but it's great to look. Plus great big boxes of turkish delight

AuntiePickleBottom · 02/08/2011 20:34

yanbu, i even buy the microwave tubs for the kids....and then i only have to load 2 plates into the dishwasher...god that sound really lazy

readywithwellies · 02/08/2011 20:36

Why is it a 'small' meal? Three slices and a tin??!! I couldn't eat it all!

Auntie - I bought those but they taste funny apparently! Dsd again lol!

You are very definitely not being unreasonable. Maybe time to teach your DSD how to cook if she doesn't like what you offer her. B beans on toast absolutely fine - if it's not enough then give her another slice with more beans! Or, grate some cheese on the top and in addition give her a bowl of homemade soup soup out of a tin if you are tired + fruit and yogurt after. You could add a glass of milk if she likes that or a smoothie made with fresh fruit. Do not beat yourself up over it. Some children will play the you haven't, you didn't, you're a terrible mother card at every opportunity. My son once told me that I never gave him anything. It was Boxing Day...

MrsPlesWearsAFez · 02/08/2011 20:38

YANBU

Mumcentreplus · 02/08/2011 20:40

@GetOrf...and don't forget big bags of basmati rice!

The fact is if it's edible ,nutritional and legal they can have it one day a week it wont kill them will it!

My mum would do CB on a Saturday after we went shopping...corned Beef with onions, tomatoes and peppers/chillis,garlic, black pepper... make a little sauce with rice and veg we always looked forward to it..even when we pretended to complain!

KeepCalmAndPrayToCastiel · 02/08/2011 20:45

Yanbu. But neither is your DSD. If hungry I'd not be impressed with the offer of beans on toast. It's not going to fill you up, well it wouldn't fill me up but I'm a greedy pig.Grin

foreverondiet · 02/08/2011 20:47

I think it depends on what she had for lunch. If it was a meat/fish type lunch then fine for dinner. If however she had a a light lunch eg sandwich for lunch then no, its not enough.

My kids though happy to eat pasta with passata out of carton as sauce with cheese on top. Not actually any more effort or less nutritious but feels more like a meal.

chicletteeth · 02/08/2011 20:48

I got a 10 kilo bag of basmati for £8 [smug]
What a bargain!
Bloody supermarkets with theri 1kg for £3 or what have you

readywithwellies · 02/08/2011 20:49

Can you explain how a low gi meal is not filling? I think its all in the mind. A meal isn't a meal without meat mentality!
