to play Dolly Parton to my DDs

Ok, so I do like a bit of Dolly to sing along to in the car from time to time. It's normally a solo activity but a few weeks ago I put her on when the DDs (4 & 3) were in the car as I couldn't face another journey with the Toy Story soundtrack.

They loved it. So now we frequently have some female bonding time blaring out 'I will always love you'.

DH does not like this. Which amuses us all and encourages us. I particularly like it when the DDs spontaneously break into a wobbly rendition of Jolene or Harper Valley PTA in the supermarket or the swimming pool. The look on DH's face is priceless.

So, AIBU to continue to play Dolly to them for the bonding factor and the effect it has on DH, or am I actually condemning them to a livelong love of 'uncool' music and the risk of being laughed at in later years....

DS (3) can quite happily sing the chorus to Islands in the Stream, we regulalry watch it on Youtube, tis his favourite.

Meglet · 02/08/2011 21:37

YANBU. We have 9-5.

My sister taught the DC's a line dancing routine and a 'tipping their cowboy hat' action. They even do it in the back seats.

Changing2011 · 02/08/2011 21:39

YANBU my late mum LOVED Dolly and even tired to get me to name my DD Jolene! I always think of mum when I hear Dolly x

mrspear · 02/08/2011 21:39

THANK YOU sorry to shout but i have been trying to remember the name of that song for ages!

As for children liking dolly my 21 month ds loves her!

Pkam · 02/08/2011 21:53

Meglet - a dance routine; liking that idea.

DH is getting support over in tritalk. Obviously Dolly doesn't feature much in triathletes training play lists. Maybe DH would run a bit faster if I put 9 to 5 on his ipod.

Dolly is cool. She grew up in a mountain shack and now has her own theme park called 'Dollywood'. Can't get much more of a role model than that.

QueenOfAllBiscuitsandMuffins · 02/08/2011 22:04

Oh I grew up listening to Dolly Parton, John Denver, Kenny Rogers etc and I'm completely normal and a triathelete with a tritalk logon....

QueenOfAllBiscuitsandMuffins · 02/08/2011 22:05

completely normal apart from an inability to spell.

Doobydoo · 02/08/2011 22:07

...sometimes it's hard to be a woman Grin

Also Dolly is terrifically cool and promotes literacy. Which makes her Educational. So really you are playing Educational Songs to your daughters.

YANBU

I'm another Dolly fan.

Recently went to watch Dolly along with my mum and my nan - Dolly is great for all generations and definitely good for bonding.

Scuttlebutter · 02/08/2011 23:12

Dolly is a GODDESS. She is a terrrific role model for your DDs. She is strong, courageous, tough, intelligent, a fantastic businesswoman, literacy campaigner, incredibly funny and supercool. She is an amazingly talented singer, songwriter and musician. Yes, of course you should be playing her to your daughters.

And I'd also suggest Emmylou, Bonnie Raitt, Alison Krauss and Gillian Welch. Country women are serious role models - women who can outsing, outshoot, and outearn any man.

And the sooner they get into Johnny Cash the better.

And DH is a very keen runner, and Dolly features prominently on his I-pod, along with Mr Cash.

FreudianSlipper · 02/08/2011 23:12

Dolly is an amazing woman, very smart and very talented i love listening and singing along with Dolly

i have never played and will never play nursery rhymes in the car. ds loves n.e.r.d (the doggy song, aka she wants to move is his favourite) the beatles, kings of leon, led zeppelin, nirvana, amy winehouse he sings along to rehab among lots of others

Seabright · 02/08/2011 23:24

9-5 is totally Dolly-tastic, I love it!

queenmaeve · 02/08/2011 23:32

Love dolly, so do the dc.

EightiesChick · 02/08/2011 23:39

Dolly is fantastic. Lovin' You was on my soundtrack from when DS was born. Cash On The Barrelhead is great. 9-5 is superb. Plus she buys books for deprived kids. Play her loud and proud!

vintageteacups · 02/08/2011 23:47

My dd (9) and DS(6) love Dolly and Doris (Love Joleen and the purple cow song the best)

BagofHolly · 02/08/2011 23:53

Dolly is god. Fact. And the good ole u s of a wouldn't be up shit creek financially if Dolly ran the treasury. Nother fact. I don't think she's right for the presidency though. That's where I draw the line.

BagofHolly · 02/08/2011 23:55

Dollywood! I NEEEEEEED to go there.
