To think I must be getting really old!!

Went out in London today to a park with 7 friends and out 8 children.

Our lot were dressed in shorts/trunks and t-shirts.

The amount of little girls parading round in what can only be described as string bikinis (tie up bottoms) was shocking. Also the amount of women who were wearing thong bikinis, or string ones.

I must be getting old as heat aside I think little girls should not be in string bikinis but a nice one piece suit or a tankini maybe.

Please help me feel less old!!

It was very hot today. I agree with you TheLadyEvenstar, that a park is not necessarily the place for bikinis on adults, especially thongs, and that little ones, especially those more prone to burning, should be covered at the hottest times, and at the very least smothered in lotion.

I live on the south coast, and my DD was repeatedly smothered in Factor 50, and has a very definite tan (strap marks and a very white bottom) from wearing her tankini, she was just in her (large) paddling pool in the back garden from about 2 pm with her mates.

So, YANBU imo.

Whoremoanee, DS2 has the same a definate tan on his shoulders and back and a very white bottom and upper thighs (think 70's style throwback trunks) but he was smothered in only factor 30.

You mention they were playing in the water so I am assuming that you were at the Lido, then absolutey acceptable for people to be wearing bikinis isn't it? Should they go in the water or sunbathe in their clothes?

TheLadyEvenstar · 02/08/2011 00:41

Where no we were at the diana memorial fountain

YABU because you started off by saying that bikinis = bad and one pieces/tanktinis = OK and then moved the goalposts to claim that your objections were on the grounds of sun safety.

I have never seen a child in a bikini get sunburn on their midriff or the small of their back - they get burned on their shoulders, faces, arms and thighs because those are the bits that catch the sun, and they are equally exposed in a one piece. If the reason for your concern was skin cancer you'd be worrying about the little boys dressed only in their pants.

TheLadyEvenstar · 02/08/2011 23:47

Dilys, I do worry about boys just in their pants who are going red/appear not to have any cream being put on them.

I don't think little girls should be in tiny bikinis but this is because of the sun damage nothing else. Although i think there is a style which is meant for adults rather than little girls.

Me thinks you have changed you tune a bit since your original post to be now more concerend about their sun protection than their modesty.

Diana memorial fountain is next to the Lido btw, but also an enclosed area where kids play in the water and people sunbathe and have picnics etc, so I still don't see whats wrong with bikinis being worn.

MumblingRagDoll · 03/08/2011 16:47

Lady the only difference between a bikini and a costume is that their tummy and back is exposed....sun cream works on those areas too you know.

Hmm

Mumbling and straps

You've def changed tack, the op said "heat aside" I think littlegirls should not be in string bikinis"; now it's "because of sun damage nothing else".
