To think I must be getting really old!!

Went out in London today to a park with 7 friends and out 8 children.

Our lot were dressed in shorts/trunks and t-shirts.

The amount of little girls parading round in what can only be described as string bikinis (tie up bottoms) was shocking. Also the amount of women who were wearing thong bikinis, or string ones.

I must be getting old as heat aside I think little girls should not be in string bikinis but a nice one piece suit or a tankini maybe.

Please help me feel less old!!

Sidge, nothing wrong with it.
The ones today tied top and bottoms.

So? I wore another bikini that tied top and bottom (can't find a pic of it on that website). It was lovely and not indecent.

I think people that have a problem with kids in bikinis have the problem, not the child. A bikini is just a swimsuit with the middle missing.

amarone · 01/08/2011 21:50

Well, I wouldn´t wear a bikini in a public park myself (I´m in my 30s) but I don´t get what the problem is with children?!

No idea how old these were, but my 7 year old wants one.

What´s the big issue? I´ve seen photos of myself wearing a bikini at a young age in the 70s.

It´s not a modern day evil...
:o

amarone · 01/08/2011 21:54

Besides, I have more of an issue with spotty/beer bellied blokes walking around with their tops off.

MumblingRagDoll · 01/08/2011 21:55

FFS OP....I have 2 bikinis that tie top and bottom AND I'm 38! Old....what fdo you want?

this?

DontAskMeSums · 01/08/2011 22:00

TheLadyEvenstar

A heatwave on the way? Is it true? Really?
Really, really?
Or did you hear it on the BBC?

I can't cope with false hope.

Off to bed to warm my feet on the electric bloody blanket........Angry

timidviper · 01/08/2011 22:05

usual suspect You and I have been equally daring because I too took off my cardy for over an hour this afternoon!

minxofmancunia · 01/08/2011 22:11

YABU, I see nothing wrong with kids in park playing in water in bikinis, knickers, nappies, whatever.

dd has a couple of 2 piece swimsuits, like a sort of crop top and bottoms, I have no problem with her wearing that in public.

And I'd wear a bikini top....although not a thong mind

TheLadyEvenstar · 01/08/2011 22:23

Minx, the adults were in bikinis which tied at the side of the bottoms and tied at the top. The would have been great on a beach somewhere.

I don't see what is wrong with little girls being in a one piece or a tankini style bikini or adults tbh

BUT when I see women dressed like this minus the figure in an area filled with children I find it a bit odd Ok I am old thats fine I admit it!!!

MumblingRagDoll · 01/08/2011 22:25

what about this? Would this be as bad

MumblingRagDoll · 01/08/2011 22:26

I mean...she looks like a wholesome type of woman...

usualsuspect · 01/08/2011 22:26

I might wear a vest top tomorrow Shock

TheLadyEvenstar · 01/08/2011 22:28

thanks for the warning!!!
Seriously its not the bikini its the style tbh. The string one imo is a bit too much for a park in London. There were other women who had more modest ones on but then there were the string brigade who seemed to all be together.

TheLadyEvenstar · 01/08/2011 22:28

Usual RISQUE

OP posts:
Sidge · 01/08/2011 22:30

But why should children wear something that covers them up more? (sun protection aside)

It's just skin. It's not sexual.

I agree some adults should ditch the thongs - very few people can get away with a thong bikini - but only because it's not aesthetically pleasing Wink not because they are being sexual.

It's nothing to do with being old, it's to do with assuming intent where there is none.

TheLadyEvenstar · 01/08/2011 22:33

Sidge with regard to the children I was referring to the sun strength today. I was sat in the shade and still caught the sun. DS2 was smothered in sun cream every 25 - 30 minutes and still caught the sun. DS1 who refused to use sun cream because he is 13 and knows best is in bed unable to sleep because of his sunburn. So heaven knows how those kiddies are. Especially the very ginger/fair skinned ones.

As for the adults I think the thongs are ott in a place filled with children thats all

usualsuspect · 01/08/2011 22:34

Do children not see adults in bikinis on the beach?

Sidge · 01/08/2011 22:38

Your OP made no reference to the sun and little girls in bikinis.

It was all "shock horror little girls parading round in string bikinis".
.

startail · 01/08/2011 22:39

I spent a week in Scotland running around in just my knickers, it was 1976, I was 8 Grin If you had no breasts no one worried, but I would have had sun cream on.

TheLadyEvenstar · 01/08/2011 22:39

Sidge - did you feel the heat today? I walked for 6 minutes and was too hot.

OP posts:
Sidge · 01/08/2011 22:43

Yup, we were down at the beach for 3 hours (not in string bikinis though! Grin) it was gorgeous.

We had factor 30 on and haven't burnt at all.

But then we went on holiday to Cuba recently and spent 2 weeks in 30 degree heat and not one of us got sunburn. It's not necessarily about what you're wearing, it's about limiting exposure and using sunscreen.

TheLadyEvenstar · 01/08/2011 22:46

Sidge, I didn't get burnt, DS2's face is a little red but his legs are lovely and brown. DS1 on the other hand is burnt and the 2 little girls in bikinis with very red hair were very red it looked painful.

OP posts:
TheLadyEvenstar · 01/08/2011 22:48

I accept I abu but only because I didn't state it was the sun exposure that concerned me with the children

OP posts:
Sidge · 01/08/2011 22:49

Poor girls, obviously didn't have enough/high factor sunscreen on or weren't limited in their exposure.

I see lots of sunburn at work, I do worry why the safe in the sun message hasn't got through to so many people.

TheLadyEvenstar · 01/08/2011 23:02

All the children were running round but we made sure we grabbed ours every 25 minutes or so and smothered them again. Then made them sit and eat, drink plenty, when they got too hot sat them down etc. But there were others who were just running round without any protection it was hot and horrible to see tots getting redder and redder.
