To not understand why this didn't make it on the news?

On Friday, a local man was stabbed and beaten. Luckily he survived. From what I've been told, the beating was deserved, though no-one deserves to be stabbed

Yesterday, one of the men that beat him was also stabbed. He received 10 wounds, mostly to the neck and face. He is stable but critical and it doesn't look good. I know both men, and I'm pretty upset by it all

But why hasn't it made it on the news, not even locally? I just don't understand. Its not like its a regular or normal occurence round here. Is it such a normal thing these days that it doesn't warrant being on the news?

Assaults on males often don't make the news. Assaults on white, middle class females are a different matter. The media LOVE those. It's sad and shocking.

You're right Altinkum, no-ones deserves it, but I can understand why it happened.

I just wish a bit more about it was released. There has been talk on the street this morning that the 2nd man has died, but no-one knows if its true. I would have thought that it would have been on the news if he had. And while I know both men, I don't know them or their family well enough to find out

As has been said, murders are shockingly common, but rarely make the news, unless it's an attractive blonde middle class female who's been murdered.

I used to work with murderers and one of the really shocking things was that, prior to actually murdering someone, the vast majority were normal people, the sort you would work with, sit next to on the train, have a drink with, etc.

Geekcool, as I said, maybe it wasn't deserved but I could understand why he'd been beaten. But stabbing someone, thats just unbelievable!

If the men are known to each other it's just not newsworthy.

And no one deserves a beating.

If you know so much about it why don't you ring the local paper and tell them?

Would never have thought of doing it Limited, would you? I would have thought the police would have passed it onto the local paper if they wanted to. I was just surprised it isn't on BBC north west etc

I think loads upon loads of people 'deserve' a beating. But then, how one judges who deserves what, and who would administer the beating are moral problems of such a degree that we instead have a penal system. If you think about it, it must be far crueller to lock someone away for x number of years than sentence them to corporal punishment which is over in a few minutes.

Very true Callisto. And I suppose it isn't down to us to decide who deserves what, and as Altinkum pointed out thats why we have a penal system

Yes, I would have done. I was a local reporter. People used to ring us up all the time.

Bloody good job too because some time ago senior police officers decided to 'manage the fear of crime' by not releasing news to the local media because it made their jobs far too much like hard work and made them look a bit crap.

The first thing you'd hear about it was a huge yellow incident board appealing for witnesses to a serious crime some time after the event when the police were stumped.

I haven't seen so many of them lately. Either I've moved to Trumpton or senior officers have worked out that big yellow boards screaming: 'Murder happened here. We haven't got a clue,' also make them look crap.

She's forever complaining about something that happened 'down the end of the road last week but when I looked in the Gazette (in the newsagents, mind, she doesn't buy it) it wasn't in there.' Arggh!

Give them a ring. If you don't want to be named just tell them what you know and say you're going.

They'll probably be grateful. If not, just tell them that you're never doing their job for them again.

I thought the OP wasn't witness to anything -why would you phone the press with third party info?

Because she can say that something newsworthy happened near her but she doesn't know exactly what.

They can check it out with the police or knocking on doors if they're allowed out of the office these days.

Drug-dealers stabbing each other isn't news, it's 'dog bites man'. When it becomes 'man bites dog', then it's news.

Aren't most local papers weeklies now? The story may not have broken in time for this week's print deadline.

Or maybe it was considered just not newsworthy enough. On average 2 women a week are killed by their partners, but we don't see those stories that often either. Sadly commonplace crimes aren't considered newsworthy.
