Its horrible stuff anyway, but no not 'chavvy', mainstream definitely but not 'chavvy'.

It is very tacky in itself though really, all that flowery and polka dot crap.

pictish · 29/07/2011 09:43

I agree. Cath Kidston is now common as muck.

I never did quite understand the fascination with her stuff anyway.

SmethwickBelle · 29/07/2011 09:45

Bits are great, bits not so great in my opinion.

I have some fairly plain candy striped adult PJs which are lovely and I've worn them to death, also a spotty shopper bag that wasn't too pricey and is nice and cheery.

I am a fabric junkie and so don't rate her floral prints, or the retro ones as they're just plain ugly most of the times at least to me, and I wouldn't in a million years buy the fabric or table coverings by the metre as they're horrendously overpriced and as I say the designs just don't do it for me.

levantine · 29/07/2011 09:49

On a similair note I have noticed those Orla Kiely oilskin bags being carried mainly by the over sixties. Not that people over sixty can't be stylish and all, but I think their moment has definitely passed

Dulwich Village brings me out in hives

pictish · 29/07/2011 09:51

It's all just so 'same as everyone else' isn't it? Faddy and overpriced.

You get Cath Kidston bloody everything now....

FreudianSlipper · 29/07/2011 10:17

well its creeping into crystal palace

i am looking at places in forest hill too and crystal palace i used to live there i love it, then when pregnant thought it would be nice to live in suburbia how wrong was i, i blame my irrational thoughts on hormones

FreudianSlipper · 29/07/2011 10:18

sorry have turned this thread into my moving thread Blush

i am a little over excited

pugsandseals · 29/07/2011 10:18

I love the bags for school - DD always has loads of folders to carry around & they fit perfectly & can still be slung over the shoulder. After lots of nagging we got fabric from the factory shop (yes they still make some stuff over here) to make her some curtains for her new room. Also got a duvet cover. Both are very good quality & perfect for the older child who want something a bit more grown up but fun Smile

filthyfunkproject · 29/07/2011 10:18

Oh I love East Dulwich. My sister has a beautiful flat just off Lordship Lane - and my brother lives in Forest Hill so I'm biggin up SE London Grin

Schtum · 29/07/2011 10:21

"balled up tissues in candlewick dressing-gowns"

Fabulous!

... and velveteen mule slippers with a fluffy Pom-Pom on to add a dash of girly charm

GwendolineMaryLacey · 29/07/2011 10:22

Couldn't give a toss. I have a CK wallet because they are the longest lasting wallets I've ever found. They don't split and the zips don't break. Other than that, meh, who cares.

mmmmmchocolate · 29/07/2011 10:31

I was desperate to get the red spotty Cath Kidston Maclaren. Thenwhen I saw it around it was mostly being pushed by a chav. Didn't buy one and questioned my own chavvyness.... Hmm

FreudianSlipper · 29/07/2011 10:51

if you really like something then see what you think as a chav wearing it isn't that a little judgemental. surely you like something because you like it not because it is a name

i find those that love ck, ok and also seem to love boden are the most judgemental and love to call others chavs but they too are wearing their oh so middle class uniform, really what is the difference one shows you have a bit more money but still allow oneself to be dictated too by magazines on what is in and what is not

limitlessclutter · 29/07/2011 11:22

"I was desperate to get the red spotty Cath Kidston Maclaren. Thenwhen I saw it around it was mostly being pushed by a chav. Didn't buy one and questioned my own chavvyness.... "

So what are you saying, exactly? That someone you perceive as having less money and taste than you ought not to own a nice thing? That the nice thing is devalued for you by being owned by someone you look down on?

I'm going to stop reading this; there's a pretty unpleasant undercurrent in lots of these posts.

Sharney · 29/07/2011 12:17

limitlessclutter I think you may be onto something. For those who think there is much of a difference between middle class and working class. Why? If you have to work for a living, to afford the things you need and want, you're working class. Oh never mind. Have a feeling I may be talking to a brick wall on this one. Confused

MumblingRagDoll · 29/07/2011 12:29

It's all about aspiration. People aspire to wear/carry CK or Boden because they don't know any better...they think it denotes taste/style etc and having a bit more money than people who traditionally shop in Argos etc. That in itself is classless.

The quality is awful and people who actually have plenty of cash/style/taste are usually more interested in quality....not recognisable brands.

mmmmmchocolate · 29/07/2011 13:01

limitless.
"less money" not an issue. I'm not in the slightest bit rich. I don't judge anyone on their earnings.
"less taste" probably.

emmanana · 29/07/2011 13:24

Forest Hill, Edgy?
Love East Dulwich especially for William Rose Butchers and the fishmongers. I'm in Forest Hill, wish we had half the lovely shops E Dulwich does. Still - our new swimming pool opens next year. Yipeeee!

Lainey1981 · 29/07/2011 13:35

Errrrm no aspirations here with regard to CK. I purchased my mugs because they were big and pretty

GwendolineMaryLacey · 29/07/2011 18:34

None here either. I was given a big CK purse. I loved it, it got nicked, I replaced it. It could have had a picture of a wolf on the front for all I care.

catgirl1976 · 29/07/2011 20:06

Too twee for me (and I don't mind vintage) but it is fecking everywhere so now really over

sue52 · 29/07/2011 20:06

I've just bought a CK Roberts radio for the kitchen. I just had to have, it's so pretty. DH thinks it's an overpriced piece of junk but what does he know.

housemum · 09/08/2011 00:23

I have a CK apron from many years back. DD3 has a CK dress from the outlet shop, was same price as a full-price one from M&S, really suits her colouring but would never have paid full whack.

I have a CK bowling bag style handbag, beige with roses - love it, good size (fits a nappy change in and enough stuff without being oversized) but after 3 years daily use it's a bit knackered. Went to the outlet shop last week for another but none were as good - and the shop creeps me out, just far too many flowers in one place, was bringing on my hayfever! It's just too many variations on very similar themes.

I do like some Emma Bridgewater - well made, British made, and looks good in small doses. We have quite a few mugs, and the serving dishes with the lettering round (I know everywhere does it now, but EB just feels and looks better). But it commands silly prices on eBay from the fanatics!

"Chavvy" probably the wrong word, "over exposed" is more like it. Or ubiquitous but that took me a while to think about. Know what you mean, though, a brand devalued by over use.
