IN THINKING THAT THIS WOMAN IS NUTS?

At a gathering this afternoon and got chatting to a woman that i vaguely know.. Conversation turned to fabric conditioner of all things (don't ask) and this woman announces that she washes all her husband and sons clothes in a 'more manly' smelling fabric conditioner than she uses for her own and her daughters clothes. Because she doesn't want them smelling 'like girls'. I laughed heartily til i realised that she was serious then stepped swiftly away as I believed her to be a loon. AIBU?

I expect she just means her husband's clothes smell of sweat and she can't get it out...so she is making excuses that he is meant to smell like that.

Megatron · 28/07/2011 21:16

I don't know why I did the shouty title really I think I may have been shouting in my head at the sheer MADNESS of it all. actually she made me feel inferior that DH walks around smelling of jasmine and ylang ylang but I like it dammit!

I have to be honest, I can sort of see her point.

I dont wash husbands stuff separate, but I do avoid getting tablets that have a "feminine" fragrance and go for more neutral ones..

WinkyWinkola · 28/07/2011 21:29

Pity her.

LikeACandleButNotQuite · 28/07/2011 21:32

the woman clearly has far too much time on her hands.

Although.....I did buy fabric conditoner the other day which, when I opened it, thought "oooh, this smells like mens aftershave, must be for men' laundry"

Still useit for mine though...would be mental to have bought separate for me

TimeWasting · 28/07/2011 21:38

Hope the marketing people at Lynx aren't reading this, long-suffering Mums all over Britain will be pestered all the way down the laundry aisle when they bring that out.

lashingsofbingeinghere · 28/07/2011 21:48

A new product niche has opened up:

Lador fabric conditioner - notes of beer, fart, belch, curry and an undernote of socks.

baguettecut · 28/07/2011 21:51

For fuck's sake. Do people really give thinking time to this rubbish?!!

joric · 28/07/2011 21:58

Give them time timewasting i'm sure it will happen....:(

Bestb411pm · 28/07/2011 23:09

I shall have to respectfully ask you all to shove it, as this woman is a shining example of all I hold dear!

Seriously, I have a dangerous obsession with laundry scents and get a curious sense of satisfaction from certain scents - I'm still mourning the loss of the bold 'refreshing spa' after they replaced it with that stupid crystal lilly shite.

Oh I've got a full time job as well Wink

SarahStratton · 28/07/2011 23:19

I am a slattern then, I never bother with fabric conditioner. And I use own brand tabs Blush

youarekidding · 28/07/2011 23:22

YANBU. Mindyou I was using lavender fabric conditioner once as it's meant to aid a good nights sleep and DS had been restless at night for a few days, and someone told me 'it can make boys grow up 'gay''. Shock

I politely pointed that in spite of me being no scientist I doubt that's what influenced peoples sexual preference and I'm sure if my DS was homosexual it wouldn't be my lavender fabric conditioner.

He was 4yo at the time btw. Grin

Joolyjoolyjoo · 28/07/2011 23:23

YANBU- she sounds loopy! If I want DH's clothes to smell manly I simply leave them on the bedroom floor where he left them, and don't bother washing them at all- mmm, lovely (not!)

Maggie1973 · 29/07/2011 12:46

That's just wierd. She needs to find something better to do with her time.

tryingtoleave · 29/07/2011 12:50

I use white vinegar instead of fabric conditioner - no smell at all.

Gay40 · 29/07/2011 12:52

I love the different fabric conditioners, but I wish they would do them in less flowery ranges - like green apple or something. All female household though. I just prefer the smell of fruit to flowers.
Clearly I have too much time on my hands I BLOODY WISH Grin

carabos · 29/07/2011 12:52

AnnieL - you are right, there is literally nothing else to say.

2shoes · 29/07/2011 12:53

yanbu
why would people want to talk about washing whilst they are out though?
I hate the smell of fabric conditioner so buy the sensitive one with no smell

Ormirian · 29/07/2011 12:54

What does the manly conditioner smell of? Fascinating.

Kladdkaka · 29/07/2011 12:55

If it's in a bottle and it's in the laundry room, that'll do for me. The last load smelt of dog shampoo. :o

Suncottage · 29/07/2011 13:00

I bought one once that was meant to smell of Black Diamond and Lotus Blossom.

I just wanted to know what a Black Diamond smelt like. Hmm

allhailtheaubergine · 29/07/2011 13:00

Youarekidding - were you using OMO?

PorkChopSter · 29/07/2011 13:20

^^
^^

Really, how on earth do you move a conversation from oh I dunno, normal things onto fabric conditioner anyway? Confused

changeforthebetter · 29/07/2011 13:27

Suncottage - round here the men are more likely to smell of White Diamond - classy BOGOF at the local Spar Grin

This is so deliciously bonkers it's off the scale. She ought to get an award for cheering people up.
