To judge potential childminders on things like accents?

Looking for a childminder and finding it hard to envisage leaving dd at all (but know I have to work for my sanity).

Today's visit was lovely, great set up, lovely CM with a very strong regional accent. I don't have an accent to speak of and am pretty anal about speaking properly, grammar, etc. DH has an accent but not from this area. I'm imagining i'll get flamed for being a snob but does anyone think this should be a factor in making a decision?

And as a slight side 'issue' she used a really high baby voice when speaking to dd which would do my head in - dd didn't seem to mind though!

So AIBU?

All my kids speak posher than me.

Even the ones born in East London.

How does that happen? Do you think they hear my voice and think to their little selves 'well I will never get anywhere talking like that'

I can imagine them reading books on elucution (and spelling) under the duvet with their Dr Who torches.

Poor little fings.

I must admit, I trained myself to speak properly because my own mother's Black Country accent/dialect grated on me from an early age. Blush

My DD has a 'well lush' accent as a result of going to a nursery where lots of the staff have very strong south-walian accents. As a result she comes out with amusing local sayings like 'Where to is it from?' and says 'yer' instead of 'ear' etc.

I think its endearing, and she blends in well at school as a result Grin, so OP YABU!!!

YANBU. However, a strong accent wouldn't actually bother me (unless it was one of the ones that offend my ears - I won't say which they are). I would refuse one who didn't pronounce her words properly though, eg nuffink.

I have a mother from Glasgow, a father from Devon and I was brought up in Sheffield. I must sound very interesting.

You should hire me, I sound like the movie Fargo. :o

Seriously, she talks like (Julie Walters)

I am also anal about the way DS's talk but this has nothing to do with regional accents. I have no problem with pronounciation , just lazy speech - like dropping t's and h's and using "aint" instead of "isn't" etc. - and before anyone tells me I'm up myself ........I know and don't care! ;)

MissPenteuth · 26/07/2011 19:41

CheerfulYank I love that accent. "Minnesota nice" Grin
