To think that this isn't an appropriate gift for a 3 year old?

Sister sent my dd a book with lovely illistrations for each letter of alpabet with different ways a kid dies ... (eg a is for Amy who fell down the stairs).

Ok admit I may be unduly sensitive (child dd knew died unexpectedly recently so have discussed dieing etc) but think there are better ways to discuss and talk about this . Or am I being ott (dsis has no kids and an odd sense of humour)

Just seen the circumstances, in which case, no, not great timing but otherwise it's a very funny book.

MonkeyTastic · 24/07/2011 12:30

YABU!

Edward Gorey was a brilliant author and the book you're talking about, Gashlycrumb Tinies, is a children's classic first published in 1963.

It's perfect for a child...

Gastonladybird · 24/07/2011 12:30

That's it- as I say fine if that's your thing and older (and The etchings are good).

Bunny suicides? Siamo sounds like your sis and mine similar

mmmm Seen the links now, I'm not sure I'd want DD to have it, but the reviews on amazon are really good aren't they?

SiamoFottuti · 24/07/2011 12:31

I think its brilliant. But like any gift you get, you say thank you graciously and then hide it away if you don't think its appropriate. complaining about the thoughtlessness or inappropriateness of a gift is extremely bad form.

Gastonladybird · 24/07/2011 12:33

Wasn't going to complain - as you say it was a gift even if not my taste. May put it away for another day tho.

F is for Fanny sucked dry by a leech

nethunsreject · 24/07/2011 12:34

bunny suicides is for adults, butt 5yr old found it and laughed his head off.

I'd have sobbed at his age!

IslaValargeone · 24/07/2011 12:35

Just had a look at the links, looks like a great book for older kids.

nethunsreject · 24/07/2011 12:35

buT not buTT!

Tortington · 24/07/2011 12:35

i quite like it but more for a 6 year old halloween party sort of thing

GwendolineMaryLacey · 24/07/2011 12:37

Hector and Neville are my favourites. Poor little Neville who died of ennui and you just see these two little sad eyes at the window.

jimswifein1964 · 24/07/2011 12:37

I love the Gorey Alphabet, buts its sooo expensive. Ebay it!

thefirstMrsDeVere · 24/07/2011 12:37

Depends on the child and on the family IMO.

It would be wildly inappropriate for a family who had experinced child loss.
Most kids would probably love it..
Some children would be disturbed by it. My DS would read it and then would not stop going on about it but he has ASD and has lost a sister so is already quite obsessed.

But if your child is not specially sensitive, likely to obsess, hasnt experienced a recent loss etc

It is a child's book so not innapropriate really.

But if you dont like it you are perfectly reasonable to keep it from your child. We all have our own tastes and opinions. I dont think you would be wrong or precious if you did.

pixiestix · 24/07/2011 12:42

Ick. I wouldn't like it.
But then, I was given bunny suicides as a Christmas present after XP killed himself. Sad Some people just live on a different planet.

SnapesPlaything · 24/07/2011 14:20

I would have loved it as a kid but I loved StruwwelPeter as well when I was small. Children do like gory things, its not real to them so its fun and a bit thrilling to look at tose sorts of things. Look at the original fairy tales, it dosnen't do any harm. YABU
