To think that limos for 11 year olds "Proms" are a bit OTT

I saw some kids in one earlier shouting abuse out of the window at people on the street. Don't understand the need for it really. I think when I left primary school we had a disco with cake and crisps.

Oh intelligence... How do you know they were depressed? How do you know they wern't doing their own thing but were just not being ostentatious? How do you know that they weren't thinking - that's so tacky?!!

intelligenceitself · 23/07/2011 09:41

Because they were asking if there were any spaces left inyerface

joric · 23/07/2011 09:43

Allstron- groovy!!!! :o

Intelligence- tax credits.. Yep, that's what they were brought in for! :(

exoticfruits · 23/07/2011 09:43

Such a shame-leaves nothing new and exciting for later.

joric · 23/07/2011 09:48

Intelligence, Yes I can now see that the others must have been gutted not to have been able to join you .....

:o :o

I've just looked through the prom pic supplement in my local paper. I can say that I would not be happy with my 16 year old daughter going out looking like a cut price WAG and spending the evening draped over a spotty oik with a gelled down fringe, wearing a shiny suit.

frazzle26 · 23/07/2011 09:51

Year 6 at my son's school had a disco I believe. No prom although I know from reading FB that other schools in the area did because one Mum who I'm friends with hired a hummer for her son!!

SixtyFootDoll · 23/07/2011 10:02

Yes its tacky to us, I have never been a limo, never will go in one.
But for 11 yr olds it is FUN.
And as for the reasoning , we didnt do it in our day......wel we didn't have computers in our day, do we stop our children having them too?

Don't be so miserable. DSs limo cost me £10, he had a memorable night, just a normal disco and barbie done by the teachers after, and lots of great photos.

Chandon · 23/07/2011 10:17

I need to know where all this happens, certainly not in Hants as far as I know.

Are you all in the Midlands? Essex?

Somehow cannot imagine this in, say, Scotland or Devon, but maybe that is crass regionalism on my part????!!!!

traceybeaker · 23/07/2011 10:18

I am in Devon and yes it is done here................

SIXTYFOOTDOLL..........................hurrah someone with a sense of fun at last!!!!!!!!!!!!

joric · 23/07/2011 10:20

Oh but allstron is that not what you have always dreamed of??? Think how proud you would feel .... :o

when they are at leaving age of 16 its not so bad but why not just hav a huge disco in a venue other than school hall if they want something a bit different but the cost of proms and limos is stupid american shit but proms for infants and juniors is way OTT and if stupid parents that thought it was fine decided well no its not good for that age then you would find the schools would stop it if no one turned up our year 6 leavers at local primary have a limo fun bus for half hour drive around and it costs parents £18.00 each they have sweets choclate non alchoholic lemonade and a party bag with a age appropriate gift in plus a group pic which i think is a lot nicer than flashy overpriced american proms

DS left juniors yesterday. THey had a leavers party on Thursday night, all planned and organised by the kids and teachers. They applied in writing to be on the committee, were interviewed for the jobs on the committee, and then decided what format the evening would take.

THe children themselves decided it would be a formal do, so smarter dress than a normal school disco. It cost me a fiver, plus a bag of nachos (and a suit as DS never expresses an opinion about his clothes, and is usually happy to wear second hand so when he said he wanted a jacket for the do we decided to oblige! Only £38 in the sale).

One group of children turned up in a limo, but the rest walked in, we only live about 10 mins form the school. THey had a great time, lots of happy memories, one of the teachers took lots of group shots and had printed them before the end of the evening.

Yesterday they did sign each others' shirts, and DS went for pizza and a DVD at a mate's house with a gang of others.

Yes, we didn't do much in my time for leaving juniors - secondary we had a prefects dinner at a local restaurant with some of the staff - who happily bought us wine all night as we were eating a meal. I think limos etc are a bit OTT, but a leavers' disco is fine by me.
